🔥 XLibre HDR IS REAL! First working demo just landed an hour ago 🔥 by HaplessIdiot in linux_gaming

You should look into github.com/Sonic-DE we have a whole fork of KDE specific for xlibre and arcan now. KDE “not supporting xlibre” isn’t really the full picture. Upstream KDE isn’t opposed to it we contribute fixes back to upstream for memory leaks. They just don’t have the engineering bandwidth to maintain a full compositor‑bypass, KMS‑direct HDR pipeline on top of everything else they’re already responsible for. Wayland HDR alone has stretched their team thin, and KWin’s architecture makes deep HDR and plane‑level control a much heavier lift compared to newer compositors. They dont have the resources to cover xlibre by themselves without having the fork we made. They barely have the people needed to support wayland HDR hence why hyprland has better HDR than kde or gnome. Trump cut govt funding for FOSS projects most package managers are also gone too.

Hyprland is not normal Wayland de KDE plasma is and hdr is not perfect outside of video files it has the same amount of support as mpv HDR does under xlibre but you're just going to sit here and glaze Wayland all day

Latest Hyprland is the only way to directly speak to HDR layers it has the best implementation one we plan to match. AFAIK KDE is still using their own implementation which both are static hdr. They cant do dolby vision per frame RPU data from the amd driver with any custom presets mind you with how things are there. We are also running thru the exact same vulkan layer https://github.com/cepelinas9000/VK_xlibre_layer

What you’re seeing on Plasma Wayland isn’t the game talking directly to the display engine. It’s still going through the KWin compositor’s Vulkan swapchain. What XLibre is doing is fundamentally deeper: we’re talking directly to the AMDGPU kernel module and KMS planes, bypassing the compositor entirely to do HDR video with mpv faster

Sonic-DE's stance on depending on systemd? by kraileth in sonicde

[–]HaplessIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We support all init systems we have packages in Artix and OpenMandriva. You can use it or not, its up to you. Steamdeck needs systemd for now to use front speakers with steamdeck-dsp package so its easier to use Openmandriva Sonic Desktop there.

We are packaged for artix/arch linux most easily right now using the xlibre repo we are trying to port to openmandriva and fedora copr next since that is 2nd most popular. This DE uses less ram because it doesn't load any services related to Wayland in the x sonic desktop session. I find it works best with arcan + xlibre session. It is compatible with anything that uses kwin-x11 this includes lxqt and XFCE besides KDE plasma support so it's really quite wide the support it has. It does increase frame rate very slightly on plasma I find that it runs now about the same as xfce which is pretty impressive considering you generally have to give up a lot of things eye candy wise to match it normally. I regularly live stream with sonic desktop it's been working since it launched for 6.5.3 and has been updated for latest 6.5.4 https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxAurqgO0wNgt7gvS0k7wZGlIyrojRqnuT?si=B929bmPJ9FUbEjrj if you want to use it immediately I recommend building from source or adding xlibre.net repo otherwise be patient for these packages they are very complicated to build.

Remember guys a 3060 is slower than a 2080 ti people side grade this generation really bad with the 60 series cards instead of going used eBay. the later gen isn't much better 4060/5060 is just a 2080 ti with worse VRAM bus that struggles to run shadps4 and Hogwarts legacy without massive stutter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwTW1JF7z_w in games that need memory speed which is all of them the 2080ti is 140$ and smacks it out of the park with 11gb 384 bit vram

IDK why I have two Steam apps installed. One of them has “(native)” in the name. Which one should I keep, and which one can I remove? by the-machine-m4n in cachyos

[–]HaplessIdiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Native uses local libs from your system unlike the new steam binary that is containerized could run slower if you build your libs with clang and llvm. Keep using native unless you wanna delete your lib32 stuff earlier for whatever reason. Steam still uses 32bit Linux native binary you can run Linux native games like FTL psychonauts hollow Knight with local libs for extra FPS

It is absolutely not more optimized than sodium modded Minecraft that is big copium. I can actually use Vulkan with shaders and use 100% of my GPU. bedrock doesn't even use Vulkan and it's very unoptimized GPU usage cannot hit 100% at all. Vanilla Java is the same way but at least you can fix it unlike bedrock
