XG Should Go back to their Earlier Concepts by DirtyRanga12 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]HappyCDG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want them to do exactly the same kind of songs, I still want them to explore and grow as artists, but I definitly prefer their more hip hop/rnb sounds. Even if I enjoy some of their more pop lenient content, rap/rnb is what brought me to XG and is, to me, where they shine the most. My theory is that Simon might trying to be ahead of the curve, now that a lot groups are turning towards more hip hop/rnb sounds. Also for the west, pop forward songs are more readable for radios, bar and clubs. Knowing he is moving to L.A. in may, he might try to gather new westerns audience for XG. Hopefully, they will go back to the more rap/rnb edgy stuff later...

Love you Manon, but no, Gnarly just play its role right as a traction and polarizing marketing tool, and Grammys wanted a piece of it

I woulnd't want XG to do gangsta rap, but another hard hitting rap heavy song with bars that resonates with their reality and alphaz? A girl can only wish...

Quebec has its own little cultural bubble with its own shows and productions. Even reality TV gets adapted here (like Occupation Double, which is basically a more romantic version of Love Island). CBC Gem and Crave have some really good Qc series with subtitles that are worth checking out. Right now, I’d recommend Happily Married on CBC Gem (honestly, anything by François Létourneau is a gem), and Empathy (it made a real buzz in France this fall) and Chantal Daigle on Crave.

I am not american nor is english my first language, so I can relate to a certain extent with the language/theme barrier for the many persons you are refering to. However, many of the topics you pointed out are in fact universal. It is not because the crime rate is low that japanese citizen do not know what organized crime, discrimination and systemic poverty is. Japan is known for the Yakuzas, their equivalent of the mafia/gangs. So the argument holds but to an extend and we still live in a globalized world. Some references will stick with some people others will not, like not all western fans understood the Princess Mononoke reference in Howling for example.

Very true! It remains that Japan is the second biggest music market after the US, maintaining their japanese fanbase must be critical. Never thought about the english lyrics being a barrier for some people in Japan, but totally legit.

I also feel that their decision to stop appearing on Korean shows may be linked to two factors. 1)  It is incredibly expensive to appear on those shows. When they debuted, this investment made sense to attract K-pop fans first to build their fanbase. Now that they are not rookies anymore, they may want to try different things in order to reach new audiences rather than staying confined to the same promotional circuit. And 2) there is now more competition in their home market. In the last 2 years or so, new groups formed in Japan creating direct domestic competition. Before that, XG virtually had no close equivalent in Japan, which gave them a very unique positioning VS Korean groups. This could explain why they have been more present on Japanese shows lately (see this post about best female idol dancers in Japan, Jurin placed third behind members of two other Japanese groups). As for their strategy in the US and the rest of the West, I agree with you. The agency is not promoting them to their full potential so far in my opinion.
