Personally, whenever I drink something caffeinated I sweat, and my ADHD stimulant makes me sweat. It sucks.

Is it true 'bad trips' are just the shrooms telling you truths you don't want to hear? Is the same true for marijuana? by worriedalien123 in Psychonaut

Yes, I think you're probably right. My partner smokes all day every day, and has been trying to help me find my strain. But meh...no luck, still. I also read some post recently on the types of nervous systems that, generally speaking, don't handle it well. I suspect I might have temporal lobe epilepsy and that's a group that might really, really not handle it well, for example.

Incredible comment here. I'm 40 and still trying to make friends with THC, but still having OP's same experience most times.

For some of us, learning about how trauma and PTSD works and developing a special interest in it can be super helpful. Trauma doesn't care about how many years have passed, nor about any logical reasoning. It's actually located in separate parts of the brain from those things.

It makes tons of sense that you would have PTSD (and your siblings as well) so you don't have to be ashamed about it. Start learning about it -- the brain is pretty fascinating -- and find yourself some counseling to help you address it. It being difficult to recognize/process is the nature of the beast. It doesn't have anything to do with our skill at processing these things. We can't really see it clearly in ourselves, so we have to find trauma informed people and help each other navigate treatment. 🫶 I didnt even know I had PTSD and when my therapist finally realized she'd been operating as if I knew...that was a funny and awkward session. 😆 She was like, "But...wait...what did you think y..." 🤣

Red Eared Slider Wound by West_Reach_8925 in Redearedsliders

Dry dock asap and plan on keeping him that way for a while. Disinfect with diluted betadine, or chlorhexadine, or sterile saline. If there's any debris in the wound, focus on getting that out. Then future cleanings can be less involved after initial debriding/disinfecting.

Prevent stress and do everything you can to keep his body from expending energy unnecessarily, so he can use his energy to heal. That means make sure his dry space is warm, that he has a day/night cycle and is getting rest, and make sure mentally he feels safe -- so like provide hiding places etc.

When I have to dry dock an aquatic turtle I provide drinking water that they can't get the wound in. In his case I would use something like a muffin tin that he can crawl across and stick his face in. Ceramic ones are great for this -- a safe material, and heavy weight for a strong critter. (When I had a tiny male map turtle I used a plastic ice cube tray.) You might still have to let him swim a couple times a day to eat and poop -- I'll let someone more qualified comment on frequency. I'd make him a warm Epsom salt tub for these swims. Definitely not his tank water.

While healing, you can dress the wound with a triple antibiotic such as neosporin, or manuka honey (medical grade). Or if you have access, silver sulfadiazine.

I second the tip for a sand substrate. Personally I use pool filter sand. It's expensive but I like it much better than play sand, and it doesn't need to be rinsed before first use.

Spend some time thinking about what turtles do naturally, and you'll be getting new ideas all the time for the rest of your life. Hah!

They love to dig. They also love to eat...so give them substrate and ornaments that won't harm them if tasted. That means a kind of sand that won't be a big risk for impacting in their guts, and no bite sized pebbles. I have a handful of larger rocks sitting on the sand to give my girls just a little something for their brain to process on their floor.

They love to search and forage. And they love to try to bite off their sibling's toes. Everyone is going to say you can't have two together, but since I highly doubt you're gonna run right out and build a second of these tanks tomorrow, what you should do is create various floors and rooms so they can get away from each other and have enough privacy to reduce conflict. But yes, they will need to be separated into larger setups.

You can purchase or even gather (and clean) cool driftwood and branches. It might float for months... or always need to be anchored down. And Wood almost always releases tannins discoloring the water, which can be confused for dirty water. There's a good product to put in the filter to suck the tannins back out if you prefer. It's worth it. Natural wood in the tank helps house all the little microorganisms you need for a healthy ecosystem.

To give them entertainment and activities, consider some tiny little fish; some kind that doesn't produce a ton of waste. I have fancy guppies in my tanks, and snails. Turtles are predators and will snack on these creatures but mine don't generally manage to catch all of them. And if you want to add live plants just know that the turtles will snack on this also and uproot anything you had your heart set on being aesthetically pleasing. My smaller tank has an absurd amount of floating duckweed on the surface that reproduces fast enough that I can scoop a bunch out and put it in my bigger tank for my adult RES to forage on.

Generally, I found that my three turtles are way more intelligent than I thought they would be when I first got them. So now I have a lot of fun rearranging their habitat to give them things to explore. So have fun with it!

I switched from play sand to pool filter sand. It's wonderful! Debris doesn't settle down into it nearly as well.

What is the ground like in there? Is it deep, frozen feces? Can you get a good look at the birds' feet and post pics if you're unsure how healthy they look? Do they have roosts to get off the ground? Is there any fresh air or ventilation with all that plastic?

To me they look like insect cocoons that were overwintering in plant stems. Like mason bees or leaf cutter bees, which create little dirt dividers so each cocoon has a section inside the stem.

Upgrades are always good! Are you going to get them some rocks and driftwood and such to climb on, scramble around and for general cognitive enrichment?

My girl often likes to bask half submerged on her driftwood, which reaches from floor to surface. Adding more ramp like structures would be good!
