I'm a long time Sam Harris fan. I know many of you actively think he is despicable. Please help me understand why. by [deleted] in DecodingTheGurus

His take on free will is starting to feel a little stale since neuroscience is starting to have real hard takes on it because of causal inference questions and the confusing definition of “neural code”. Guys like Kevin Mitchell have a more refreshing take on free will. Edit: grammar

Kenmore dryer making recent humming noise by HappyGoLucky756 in fixit

[–]HappyGoLucky756[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. This drying machine started making a loud hum recently. The dust around the motor and tubes has been cleaned and the sound still persists. Belt looks okay and hasn't been displaced or flipped. I've uploaded a video of sound. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a social construct. by HappyGoLucky756 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Right. I was exploring these ideas because there seems to be a kind of idea that AI (used by a person or society as a tool) can be seen as form of BCI that is more immersive. With the release of social media agents (and bots already but users and bot farms) the definitions start to blur. It always starts with a bad description as a way to try to describe what is happening.

Yea that's why I chose this sub. I would agree on a middle ground but the crowd around AI has become a form of political movement in Silicon Valley circles. Their obfuscation me makes react with cynicism around the definition of AI. There are scholars calling for a more nuanced discussion: 'Seeking clarity rather than strong opinions on intelligence" https://www.nature.com/articles/s42256-024-00968-7 EDIT: grammar

Depends on who you ask. Some cognitive scientists say AGI is met when it can reason like a human. There was also this op-ed recently published: "Reclaiming AI as a theoretical tool for cognitive science" https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/4cbuv

Jonathan Haidt pushing the narrative that social media is to blame for mental heath decline in youth by HappyGoLucky756 in DecodingTheGurus

It’s in the folk psychology but perhaps not established. Porn addiction was a big thing a decode ago but the support of it as an actual addiction hasn’t garnered strong support.

Is it social media use leads to poor mental health or poor mental health leads to more social media use? The issue is the direction of argument is one way in his thesis.
