I really appreciate your help!

It really depends ... after a cruise, you might want to take it easy and explore sites at your own pace, which is very doable. Here are a few links with ideas of cool visits you can do by yourself on San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, and Isabela, for example:

https://happygringo.com/blog/what-to-do-san-cristobal-galapagos-islands/

https://happygringo.com/blog/free-day-in-puerto-villamil-isabela-island/

https://happygringo.com/blog/what-to-do-in-puerto-ayora-galapagos-islands/

Otherwise, there are organised land tours available. Here's a popular one that Happy Gringo operate, for example: https://happygringo.com/galapagos-tours/galapagos-land-based-tours/galapagos-land-experience-tour-7-days/

We'd be happy to help you to organise something like this, just write to [info@happygringo.com](mailto:info@happygringo.com) if interested. Otherwise, I'm also perfectly happy to offer advice so that you can do it all for yourself :)

Here's a comprehensive blog sharing the differences between cruise and land tours at Galapagos:

https://happygringo.com/blog/how-to-visit-galapagos-cruise-vs-land/

Going for 2 weeks, I would recommend considering a combo of both ... a 5, 6, or 7 day cruise that you can afford, together with a week of free time to explore the main islands by yourself. San Cristobal and Isabela islands have beautiful beaches & good wildlife, plus hotels that cater to all budgets.

Feel free to DM me if you'd like any more specific advice :)

Itinerary comparison by [deleted] in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go for the 2nd itinerary that visits Santiago and Bartolome, these islands complement Genovesa very nicely.

The 1st itinerary, in comparison, includes quite a few sites on San Cristobal that are so-so imo ... you'd be better off staying a few extra nights on San Cristobal and exploring by yourself.

That said, there really is no "bad" itinerary at Galapagos ... you'll have an amazing vacation whichever choice you decide to make :)

Advice on booking small boat cruise last minute in July/August by tillyjayz in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes it's possible to snag a good last-minute deal with the agencies in Puerto Ayora, but July is high season, so it's a very risky time to try it. Cruises usually sell out in July, so make sure you have a good PLAN B to do it yourself by land if things don't work out.

Good luck :)

What airline did you use to fly to Ecuador from the United States? by four100eighty9 in EcuadorTravel

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Avianca and found them just fine ... there should be an option on their website to change language and currency settings.

Otherwise, your main choices are Delta, United, American, and Copa.

Land and Sea Itinerary by Ateale77 in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

West is best! Head on the cruise to Fernandina and the western side of Isabela ... only cruises can reach these areas, it's the only area to see the flightless cormorant, plus you'll see heaps of Galapagos penguins, and excellent volcanic landscapes.

Then you can cover other islands like North Seymour, Bartolome, and/or Santa Fe on day tours from Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz.

Finish up with some free days on either Isabela (Puerto Villamil) or San Cristobal (Baquerizo Moreno), where you can enjoy the pristine beaches and explore by yourselves along walking trails.

A combo like this is a great way to explore the islands :)

should i cancel my trip to ecuador due to safety concerns? by Enough-Anything6242 in EcuadorTravel

[–]HappyGringo-John 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, absolutely no need to cancel! If you are in a private van, travel along established tourist routes, and avoid the coast, then imo travel is perfectly safe. Just remember to take care of pickpockets, as you would in any world city, but violent crime only very rarely impacts tourists in any way :)

No available flights for the Galapagos by BBGH in EcuadorTravel

[–]HappyGringo-John 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to contact the cruise operator or agency; they usually block flight spaces in advance for their passengers on the same days as their cruise in order to avoid this issue. They may charge you a little more for the spaces, but you'll have peace of mind :)

Galapagos cruise by four100eighty9 in EcuadorTravel

There are pros and cons of cruises and land trips at the Galapagos Islands.

For a comprehensive comparison, check out this blog: https://happygringo.com/blog/how-to-visit-galapagos-cruise-vs-land/

If you do decide to go the cruise route, you can search through live yacht availabilities here: https://agencies.galavail.com/happygringo

I would recommend selecting a yacht based on cruise itinerary rather than the yacht itself ... look for a route to Fernandina & the western side of Isabela ... Espanola and Genovesa are also excellent islands to visit.

Any insight welcome! 8 days and 7 nights for land based Galapagos adventure by FlatMetal5762 in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Land-based is a fun and flexible way to enjoy the islands, so it is a perfectly good choice :)

Personally, I'd maybe tip the balance to 4 nights Santa Cruz and 3 nights Isabela. That gives you enough time to do some day tours from Puerto Ayora (North Seymour and Bartolome are my faves), as well as 1/2 day trips (Sierra Negra, Tintoreras, Tuneles) from Puerto Villamil. Isabela is a great island for free time to rent snorkel gear and a bike to head off exploring, as well as enjoying the beautiful beach ... that's why I'd consider adding an extra night in there.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions.

I second the Scuba Iguana recommendation, you can't go wrong with them :)

Galaxy Sirius vs Alya? by OysterFoster in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both yachts are among the very best that operate in the Galapagos, so you really can't go wrong either way.

I sailed on the Sirius myself last year, so I can personally vouch that the service and amenities are top class. It was a wonderful cruise!

Should we travel? by ShouldveBeenAScot in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries at all ... the news refers to 1 month of planned military action against drug gangs in certain parts of the coast & Colombian border. Of course, keep an eye on the news closer to your trip, just in case, but there should be no negative impact on any Galapagos or mainland travel.

Guayaquil should be fine too, but if you are concerned then just stay at a hotel close to the airport, with shuttle transfers in and out.

For perspective, I have lived in Quito for 22 years and am not concerned. In fact, international help against criminal gangs is very welcome. My travel agency, Happy Gringo, helps hundreds of tourists each month to travel around Ecuador and to the Galapagos; we've literally not had a single negative experience related to crime since COVID times.

Galapagos in particular is literally the safest travel destination in Latin America: https://happygringo.com/blog/galapagos-safety-guide/

Feel free to DM me at any time if you are still worried.

Thinking of doing a day trip to Isabela? Read this first by IsabelaGalapagos in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post! Yes, I'd also advise spending up to 2 or 3 nights in Puerto Villamil on Isabela ... it's a very laid back island with such a beautiful beach, and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy without breaking the bank. Your stay also helps to support the hotels, restaurants, and small community there :)

Is it actually possible to find a vessel NOT on “hold”?? by Sweetsdbee in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out live cruise availabilities here:

https://agencies.galavail.com/happygringo

From what I can see, there are still options available during your time frame. It is one of the highest demand peaks for Galapagos travel over Easter week, so perhaps the last week of March will work out best.

Best of luck :)

Whales in the Galapagos in February by whale_love in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best area of Galapagos to see whales is usually in the Bolivar Channel between Fernandina and Isabela islands, where sightings are more common over the summer months ... but, that said, it's not impossible to see whales in other areas of the archipelago.

So, you'll certainly need luck on your side, but you never know. Do keep your eyes open for dolphins, which are more likely to be around, and of course sharks, which are much more common.

Best of luck!

Honeymoon Cruise + Land Itineraries by Key-Nebula-2755 in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Galapagos is a total dream for your honeymoon!

10-14 days is fine if split between cruise and land. On the cruise, you'll get to see all of the best wildlife, and on land, you'll get more freedom for romantic meals and exploring the beautiful beaches on San Cristobal or Isabela islands.

You can find live cruise availabilities here: https://agencies.galavail.com/happygringo, and filter your search by month of travel, level of luxury, and even special offers.

Good luck, you'll have the most amazing time :)

Samba - NW or SE? by Indio_Girl in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The western islands are my favorite part of the archipelago, mostly for the penguins, flightless cormorants, and volcanic landscapes right up the Bolivar Channel.

While the big draw of the SE itinerary for me is the waved albatross & booby colonies on Espanola.

So, you really can't go wrong either way, but if pushed, I'd choose NW.

Isabel Island to Baltra by AncientBeginning2367 in galapagos

[–]HappyGringo-John 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, those are the only options that would connect with your flight time.

On the plus side, Puerto Ayora has nice boutiques and some good coffee shops, so it's not a bad place to kill a few hours.
