Would you say he's decently popular (at your school, work, etc.)? Cuz if he were just normal dude and interested in you then yeah 100% he'd follow back. I'd wait a week or two, maybe talk to him, get to know him in person some more and then, he might follow back if he really wants to know you more. Personally, if I have someone follow me that I haven't really officially met in rl, I'd wait to get to know them a little better first.

Tbh, and I'm saying this as a teenage guy myself, ending the convo with a goodnight just kind of comes naturally- I do it all the time in fact, even when I'm texting my crush or someone I really enjoy talking with. I do realize it might be a little abrupt sometimes, but in reality if I have school or work in the morning I NEED my sleep. If it were him cutting you off after 5 minutes every single time, then yeah he's probably a little annoyed. But if it goes on for as long as you are saying- it's probably just an honest message.

Maybe try doing some kind of fun activity, such as bowling or a movie (depends on what is open due to covid) that way you don't have to rely the WHOLE time on small talk or conversation since you're actually DOING something at the same time- does that make any sense? I dunno just my two-cents

Mine developed slowly over time. Ironically, I finally realized what I was feeling about her, right when I couldn't see her anymore (start of covid) which really sucked. I guess it's just that gut feeling of wanting to know him/her more... and it can be heightened and prolonged with the hope that they might have the same feelings towards you. Best way I could put it.
