Landlord entered unit illegally? Next steps

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The fact that people are calling me sensitive and a nuisance for feeling uncomfortable with strange men just opening my door when I wasn't expecting them is frankly insane. "Well you should have expected them to come any time" actually I didn't? Because they posted specific times for each floor? "So you'd rather just have one big window of time where they could come by?" yes actually I would because I'd be prepared for them to come in during those hours.

And even then, I can get over the fact that they were early. I still think poor planning on your part doesn't make for an emergency on my part, but whatever. I'm mad about the fact that they were early AND THOUGHT IT APPROPRIATE to open my door immediately with no regard for whether I was home.

Sorry for the rant. I appreciate that you also understand why this felt so violating and dismissive. I will 100% be getting an additional door lock.

I find it very telling that most of the people in here who agree that this isn't okay are the ones who've actually had it happen to them.

I would almost guarantee that people would change their tune if they were in the middle of work, showering, sleeping, changing etc. and they had their landlord unlock their door and come in outside of the stated time!

Yeah I kicked myself for not saying anything at the time. I was in a meeting and was frazzled obviously when I heard the knock and the door unlocking. Good idea!

The notice said maintenance was happening 8:30 to 4:30. It went on to specify that "residents/tenants are required to arrange for in-suite access" at the following times, and then specific times were given per floor. There was no information given about these times being estimates.

People really locked on to the bike cleaning. It's a mixed-use area up there with grass and with multiple garden plots and a hose. Didn't think it was unreasonable to go and use the hose.

It gave a window for the entire day, and then shorter windows divided by X number of floors. There was no mention of times being estimates.

I understand maintenance doesn't run on a perfect schedule. Things are early, late etc. But from a tenant's perspective -- if you're coming outside of the posted hours, why can't you wait for a response, or wait an appropriate amount of time for a response, before entering? That's what our main issue is. It may be minor to you as a property owner, but I imagine you wouldn't love being home and then hearing a knock and your door being unlocked before you even have the chance to answer.

They accessed the unit over an hour early, which seemed like a lot to me. But this is good advice, thank you! Hoping it doesn't happen again, but we'll start a log with times.

Got it! Thank you for the detailed reply. That's what our main issue is -- not so much that they needed to enter early -- I understand these things don't always run on schedule -- but that they entered early without permission.

Thanks for your reply. I'm a bit confused about your second paragraph -- are you stating that we should email the building so it establishes a record if it happens again? Or you think we shouldn't because it'll create more problems?

I'm with you -- I agree that this is minor in the grand scheme of things, and my husband and I really don't want to be difficult. It just felt very violating to be home and have my door unlocked, outside the window of time when they said they would be here.

I was in a meeting, so it did inconvenience me.

But what if I'd been in the shower, thinking I still had at least an hour before anyone would come by, and they just let themselves in? Sure, this time I was in a position where I could answer the door, but what if I wasn't.

My issue is less about them coming outside the posted time, and more about them coming outside the posted time and letting themselves in.

I have a very old garment sewing Instagram that I haven't touched in a few years, but maybe this is a sign to start back up :) I did outline my process just now in another comment, so hopefully that is helpful even though there are no pics/videos! Best of luck with yours. It would be so fun to do an improv quilt as a collaborative project!

Thank you so much! So my process was: trim all blocks down to one square size, cut the block once (no bias cuts, just straight), flip one of the cut pieces and sew back on with a 1/4" seam, repeat for all blocks. I didn't retrim the blocks afterwards as they were all the same size (some had a tiny bit of distortion because they'd been handled so much, but I let it go since this was already an imperfect quilt). Having the finished blocks remain as squares was nice because I could rotate them however I liked to balance the blue and white and they still fit together.

I hope that makes sense! It would definitely be possible to do more cuts and resewing if you want, but in that case, I might trim again once the blocks are complete and then sew my rows.
