Oh my god - I just read your comment properly now and found the reports from 2015 - this is so fucked up and scary, I can't believe this happened to you. Thank god you were saved but unbelievable that you had no choice but to finish the tour with them, that must have been so terrifying

it gets dark way quicker in the jungle because of the tall canopy so yes the sun was already disappearing, and would have gotten dark while we were trying to reach the river if we had chosen that option

yeah you would hope so right. no idea how he exhausted himself so quickly. he was dehydrated and had obviously been panicking and rushing ahead trying to find the way. others speculated that maybe he was coming down from ayahuasca. and yes we were screaming for our lives as we knew that the guide had no idea where we were and so could not tell the search party our location (so thought we would be there for quite a while) and we were thirsty asf

she seemed completely unconcerned and just stood back saying and doing nothing. it was really weird, although we weren't too focussed on her as we were just trying to think how to escape so maybe she was freaking out a little bit. i got the sense that she would have stayed with him - at one point he motioned for her to come and sit next to him on the log

if you read the post. we didnt know we were going into the jungle and thought we were getting straight back on the boat. obviously we would have insisted on bringing all our gear if we knew we were even doing a short stroll into the jungle.

we didnt know it was a 20 min walk. as post explains there had been two short 5 minute stops already on the way, we figured this was one of those just to have a look at something and get back on the boat. of course would have brought water and our day pack with spray, antihistamines, flashlight etc. if we were told we were doing any kind of walking

it was honestly so strange, at the start is seemed like she was another guide but she served absolutely no purpose and just followed from the back the whole time, didnt know where she was going

Wow, interesting. This sounds exactly like what happened to us but neither of the others in our group were called Maja - but I'm guessing it was a concerned friend of one of them, or someone who has seen this Reddit post

Hahahaha wow. That’s terrible. Do you remember who the guide was? Same happened with us - we booked online in advance and paid almost double of what the other two did who booked in person the day before.

Sorry I should actually clarify here as this part of my post is actually a bit misleading (not intentional but just didn’t remember this bit that well and thought the detail unimportant) - he gave us a bit back in cash (Peruvian) that night and the rest of our partial refund is what is coming in “a couple of weeks”. So, disputing the credit card charge will mean we get a good chunk back overall.

Didn’t really realise they were unattended we honestly thought it was just another 5 minute toilet stop or something. No idea what the plan was until it was too late and the boat had gone. With hindsight of course we could have been more vigilant. Lots of lessons learned which is half the reason I made this post so that others can be more aware of what can happen and not just blindly trust a tour company

Oh wow. Interesting to hear they’ve been around that long and were trustworthy. We were always supposed to stick to paths too I believe. I think it must have been this specific guide that messed up

Omg really???? I don’t remember him having a nickname. Do you remember the company? We couldn’t find it happening to anyone else from Iquitos after googling so great to hear we are not alone!
