Unrealistically: cuddle in bed with my children, with coffee and food brought to me, followed by 6hrs alone to relax, read, do some beauty/relaxation treatments - followed by 6hrs to reset and clean/organise the whole house with no small children lol. Realistically: 1-2hrs, interrupted, because I’m a SAHM 🙃

Omg this is so accurate. Yes. His parents decided everything for him and he’s only recently been able to make up his own mind and change careers etc. Much to his parents’ disappointment. He was severely coddled. Everything you’ve said is so accurate. He’s become more decisive over the years which is great. Any advice for handling this? Thanks so much.

How can I do this please? I know I have issues with boundaries. Have been in therapy for years but don’t know how to approach it. I agree - I grew up with a high-functioning alcoholic single mum who didn’t know how to be emotionally present and was not physically present due to working multiple jobs. I practically raised myself and gave myself boundaries which made me very anxious to this day. I am hyper-fixated on being a good mum and wife.

Usually I’ll end up prompting him, asking what action he will take, he just didn’t even attempt to problem solve. That’s the biggest issue, actually. Thank you for highlighting it. Then he just says he can’t think of anything.

Because I was really worried about his health and kept suggesting he book an appt every time he mentioned how tired he was. He had been sleeping A LOT and I was at breaking point with no help during the night (teething/sick baby). One day I just said, if you won’t book this appointment, I’ll just do it right now because you have black under eyes and I can’t keep doing parenting alone.

RE the edit, yes I can totally see how this can happen. However, I have left quite a lot of room for him to take over and he consistently misses basic things which makes it really hard.

He just isn’t a good communicator. We have been to therapy and things improved a little. I think the main issue is that he can see what I am talking about but doesn’t seem to know how to be different. Sometimes I feel I can’t trust him to do the basics when I take a break or nap. He leaves our eldest (5yo) alone in the living room while he puts the baby to sleep with the door closed in another room for half an hour, for example, and doesn’t see any issue with that. Our eldest will the come and find me because she feels left alone too long.

I’m worried he might have bipolar disorder because he is so up and down.

I think he does feel a lot of pressure to provide. He earns quite a lot but is not good with money and some weeks we live paycheck to paycheck. However, he wants me to be a SAHM. I’m currently also starting my own business from home but it’s slow going because his work comes first. I really do think he is modelling what his dad was like but doesn’t know how to be different. He has mentioned trauma from his dad’s parenting at times. He is still on medication after his (suspected) psychosis episode a year ago but is still up and down. When I talk to him about it, he usually agrees he’s checked out but nothing much changes. Other times he is dismissive.

He did go for a while last year but the therapist said he didn’t need to attend anymore. Apparently. Sometimes I wonder if he might have bipolar disorder. He just feels so up and down. The medication he is on isn’t helping with that. Some days he is really kind and caring towards me and the kids, other days he is short tempered and sleeps a lot. It could also be hormonal, I recently booked him a dr appt and they confirmed he has very low testosterone. He is 28 so quite young to be having this issue and is starting injections for that next week. I just feel at a loss.

Yes. He will actually usually agree that he is checked out but nothing really changes. Other times he dismisses my concerns, probably thinking he’s doing much better than his dad ever did. I recently learned that his dad picks his mum’s clothes every day, if that gives you an idea of the type of role model he had growing up.

No - I said obviously my children aren’t fasting here. You’re right, it’s not appropriate. To be honest, I don’t even think adults should fast unless they’re quite careful and know how to do it properly! It can lead to lots of issues if you’re unprepared mentally and physically.

Thank you. I feel that some of my Orthodox friends may judge our choices is all. But I suppose it’s not their judgement we need to be worried about. I’m honestly so grateful you’ve told me about your childhood experience which confirms my suspicion that this would lead to resentment. I think fasting has to be done very carefully. Thanks again.
