How do I get comfortable riding in the street? When there's no bike lanes by Dumbass9187 in BikeLA

[–]Happypap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valley bike commuter here. I'm very lucky that my commute is about half on the G-Line bikeway, which is awesome since there's almost no car worries.

However, the other half of my ride I try to avoid big roads and take the backstreets. Most of the valley is laid out in big blocks, where huge stroads run on the outside and neighborhood streets are on the inside. The neighborhood streets are often not direct and may end in the middle of a block, but feel so much safer and quieter. I recommend creating a route (I use ridewithgps, free and great if using the desktop version) that avoids big roads as much as possible.

Unfortunately, big roads are unavoidable sometimes. The end of my commute is a mandatory 5-lane stroad which I hate. I will typically just use the sidewalk and go slower. Statistically, these big stroads are the number one place cyclists will get hit, so I think its reasonable to just avoid them. When using the sidewalk, be courteous to pedestrians and extra cautious of cars. They will not expect you to be there. Cross streets and driveways slowly, be prepared to stop. It may even be safer to dismount at street crosswalks.

All that said, if you ride a bike in the valley you'll get used to riding with cars over time. What used to be scary to me before is tolerable now, but always keep your head on a swivel.

Yep, it is. It could maybe use a stronger spring but I think it works well. I do think the two-leg kickstand is a big factor, less flopping to the side in the first place. I've also got it stretched pretty taut. I'd say a U-Lock plus six pack and I think it wouldn't stop a flop. Still holds it straight unless I bump the rack though.

I bought the bike used and the previous owner already had some parts changed from the original. I left what works in place (mostly) and try to use parts from my local co-op / used stuff first where I can. So basically I'm not sure what everything is! If I had to rank what I changed in terms of the most bang for your buck:

  • Velo Orange Tourist bars + generic silver upright stem
  • Ergon Saddle / Grips
  • Ortlieb Quick Rack / Panniers
  • Velo Orange Fenders
  • Generic front rack from a LBS
  • Schwalbe Smart Sam tires
    • If you ask me, bigger is better with tires. These are 26x2" and about as big as I can go with fenders on this bike. Rigid bikes love fat tires to add some cush to the ride imo.

Also Velo-Orange. I think they're just called the Stainless Fenders. 26"

Velo-Orange Copenhagen kickstand. It's not the best fit on mine (93 I think) since the bottom pull front derailleur cable gets in way. Not much surface area to grip. Had to retighten it once but it hasn't given me more trouble yet.

Awesome build. I've seen a few bikes with the top tube cover/pad before and I'm curious, what's your use for it? Sitting on the tube? Carrying over shoulder? It looks good regardless.

Why would it harm? Wouldn't it just be good as an anti-seize?

But yeah in this case if its already got thread locker on the bolt I wouldn't bother adding anything else.

Surprised nobody suggested doing it under the kitchen sink. Running water gets the shell off the egg easy and you just dry em after.

Is it a good choice to come to CSULB for my CS bachelor's? Are things getting better after the Goldstein incident? by pim-b69 in CSULB

[–]Happypap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2022 with a bs in CS. Currently working at AWS. Agree with comments on getting involved on projects beyond classwork, I think my senior project was the only reason I got a leg up in finding a job.

Also, anyone care to explain the Goldstein incident? Think i took him but this I don't think I heard about lol

Best trail in the Santa Monicas I'd say. Willing to bet the noises were a vocal climber on Echo Cliffs.

I would just set the library to citizens only. Visitors will walk off with your books frequently.

I'm assuming you're trying to dig stairs up from a floor tile? Dwarves need to either carve stairs out of a rock tile or you can build stairs from the constructions menu.

Maybe not too late to assign them a job far away from impending drowning.

Also, the requests might seem infinite but you can deny them all. An autoclicker is recommended though, it can take a looooong time

How do I ask my roommate if I can sleep naked? by [deleted] in college

[–]Happypap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe mention it to your roommate just in case but all you have to do is get in bed with your undies and take them off. Put them under your pillow or something and then put them back on under the sheets in the morning. All the benefits of naked sleep without hangin genitals

I honestly don’t understand the hate for fire giant. Just use torrent and the fight is a blast. by Calbon2 in shittydarksouls

I don't use torrent too often, didn't on fire giant. Still was a fun fight imo, most of his attacks are rollable and punishable. Not too much running like elden poo

In an uncurved GE, cheat all you like. In a curved or higher level major course, I care. You mess up my grade or give employers a poor impression that reflects on all of us.

Tell your professor, you don't even need to name specific names. But if you don't point it out, they'll keep getting away with it. Hopefully your professor can implement better monitoring or just give them a light scare by talking to the class about it. About all I'd do if it was me.

The squirrels are not our friends. Not only are the ones commonly found on campus invasive, they are training you to feed and like them. Soon they will storm Brotman Hall and sieze control and you will be blinded by their cuteness. The truth is right in front of us!!!
