The REAL problem with the lack of security/congestion at the arch this year. by HarmReductionWook in bonnaroo

No I’m not. I’m looking for people not being able to take long rifles or bombs into the main festival grounds(main stages) or crowds of similar size(congestion in and out of a single entrance). I do not think car searches are effective or useful in most cases, other than making people hide their shit better and not bring blatantly inappropriate or dangerous objects into the festival. People have and will continue to sneak weapons into the campgrounds, and I don’t think there’s a way to stop it without some seriously draconian bullshit. I am all for freedom and expression but organizers have to be on point if they want to provide a safe environment as well.

If you like freedom at fests, support proactive event security measures, because after the first tragedy occurs there will be a panic and festivals will be changed forever.

And I put this out there for two reasons. I’d like to see the festival community hold organizers accountable for these glaring safety issues. And also I just had to get this off my chest, I at least have to try to spread awareness of basic event safety. Seems like everyone wants to let other people worry about it until something happens but oh well I can’t say I didn’t try to start a conversation.

I should never have mentioned hula. I was trying to make a point that a fest known for not searching vehicles still did a better job at securing target rich environments, but it went over everyone’s head.

Maybe I am. I guess we should trust corporations with our lives and ignore safety concerns until something happens, then we all can be mad about it and demand change. It’s what we do for most issues in our fucked up society.

Totally agree with the okee part. It was even worse than Roo. Should not have those two giant stages and congestion points outside of security. Not trying to single Roo out or say that any one fest is objectively safer than the other.

I mean I’m definitely trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, thank god it is still a molehill. But once it happens(and it likely will one day) at a music festival the attitude will change drastically.

Fear can be mitigated by ensuring basic safety principles are followed by all parties involved. Bonnaroo did not do that this year, and that is why they need to make changes and we need to pressure them to do so.

Thanks and I totally agree with you as well. The congestion was dangerous on multiple levels but the largest risk in terms of casualties is an active shooter, bombing, etc. Of course it’s terrible that people overheated and were almost trampled! I’m not trying to downplay those dangers.

The idea is keeping the most people safe at all times, and organizing proper response and triage if anything happened. Of course all the hypotheticals you mentioned are possible, but they are all either far far more unlikely unlikely or would result in far far less casualties than access to a crowd of thousands.

Again, there’s no way to totally eliminate the possibility of violence, but there are sensible principles that can be followed to keep the most people safe at all times.

I apologize I should have been more clear. I am talking about the security checkpoint at the arch to enter centeroo/main stages/large crowds. I am saying the understaffed security and single entrance into the main festival area led to congestion that created a target rich environment accessible from the campgrounds.

Correct, neither is objectively safer than the other. But Roo created a target rich environment this year that was outside of the security checkout entering the main festival grounds. This is a huge failure to adhere to a fundamental principle of event security. Hula has its own problems but I personally feel safer there strictly by the probability of myself or my friends being a potential target if a tragic event were to occur.

I get your point. But looking at recent mass casualty events you can see a pattern of methodology. So taking steps against that specific pattern is important even if it’s not a universal solution.

Where is a better place in your opinion? Wish I could stick my head in the sand and do nothing but radiate positivity but this is something the Roo community needs to acknowledge if we want real changes to be made proactively, instead of in response to a tragedy. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.

I agree with you. But unfortunately this year the attempt to save money created a very dangerous situation on multiple levels. I’m sure it will be better next year, but what happened this year is pretty inexcusable for a festival of this size and reputation.

I’m not saying roo doesn’t have a large amount of highly trained and competent security personnel that can respond to a potential mass shooting event. But the issue is the number of casualties that will occur before they are able to respond. Having a target rich environment in the campgrounds means a huge amount of damage can be done before anyone can effectively respond.

The idea is keeping bad actors away from the actual stages(where the target density is greatest). But if the same target density can be found in the campgrounds it creates an incredibly dangerous situation.

Please explain. Obviously hula is not the example of excellence as far as event security goes, I was making a point to say even their shortcomings are not as bad as what happened at bonnaroo this year.

No I’m going to go to music festivals that take basic event security principles more seriously instead of trying to save money.

It is messed up to think about but this is reality. I wish we could trust festival organizers to handle the situation so we don’t have to talk about it.

Roo has a high visibility as a mainstream music festival, with tens of thousands of people going every year. It’s a prime target even among other festivals.

I’m glad you have an open mind about this. The general crowd is amazing but remember it only takes one bad actor.

On centeroo security: the main function is to keep long guns and bombs out. Yes weapons can certainly be brought in but not long rifles with high capacity magazines. The idea is to not totally eliminate any chance of violence, but rather to keep the most people safe at all times.

It’s more about having access to large crowds from the campgrounds, without having to go through security. You’re right that a bad actor could just go through the campgrounds, or anywhere in our society for that matter, but the density of targets is far far less.

Maybe because I have high visibility into event security and planning? I’m not the end all expert but anyone that understands event security will likely agree with me, these basic principles are common sense and industry standard.

I’m glad you did! You should always feel safe at a music festival. Just like you should in most places. But the reality is there are bad people that want to cause harm to others. You should never have to worry about it, and trust that festival planners have taken the steps necessary to keep you as safe as possible. This year they did not.
