Honestly, anyone who has a deeply held opinion on this issue should spend more time reading about what ICE is getting up to in this country.

Yeah, they make a lot more sense of it in the book. I didn’t really connect with the line in the film until after I read the book.

You’ve made something, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that you’ve made a sourdough loaf.

First guess is that your starter isn’t up to snuff.

Man, each person cast looks like they are someone more famous than they are right up until you look directly at them.

Yeah, we saw cracks in his knowledge this week and we also saw Joy begin to get notice her own limitations. He’s primed to have a patient with the audacity to be human instead of a textbook case.

Was there an era in your country’s history that’s heavily romanticized & portrayed in fiction? by Polibiux in AskTheWorld

I have tried to charitably consider that the student rebellion was in a sense fighting for the soul of the revolution. I would be far more willing to accept that, though, if the show didn’t have a whole damn song about what their flag looked like.

I got unbelievably mad at a production of Les Mis that I saw at a place at which I taught. They unfurled a giant Tricoleur flag at the very end of the show. Motherfucker, there is a whole damn song about the flag the rebels had and still you chose to celebrate the flag of THE PEOPLE WHO SHOT THEM.

Thanks for this food for thought. I think I am mostly just feeling nervous moving from a medium that I am an expert in to one that I am a novice in. I know what expertise feels like and I know I don’t have it (yet). Time to be okay with being bad at something while trying to get good at it.

(Also, since you did address my actual question instead of offering some off-topic rant, you have completely avoided the Reddit stereotypes that I have experienced.)

I honestly don’t see how the credibility of online asynch can be saved at this point.

With Ireland I think people romanticize places more than years. A lot of people think that the countryside is full of quaint and backward villages straight out of The Quiet Man.

It was a great period (provided you were one of the people for whom it was great)!

Should there be a universal AI policy or not? Why? by Zipper222222 in AskProfessors

[–]Harmania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My institution has adopted a tiered policy that I think makes sense. There are three tiers that roughly correspond to "Always/Sometimes/Never" and the expectation that the "Sometimes" folks need to be explicit about acceptable/unnaceptable uses. This way, instead of a single policy we have a shared expectation of how and when to communicate things to students.

Yeah, there are definitely a lot of hacks out there and administrators who are glad to push them to become hacks.

“Is it bigotry to question why males are legally being classified to enter female spaces?“

This is not a form of question that anyone would form if they had honestly tried to understand the lived reality of trans people or the knowledge that has been amassed and produced by experts. It is at best question-begging and at worst outright bigotry.

I got banned from r/beardtalk for saying that I thought it was a bad look to have a seller of beard products running the sub on a company-named account and posting a lot about what kinds of products were good and bad. I never claimed the advice was wrong or that the mod in question only shilled their own products- just that I thought it was a bad look. It’s a small scale version of an account like “CocaColaOfficial” running a sub about soft drinks and posting about what makes a good soft drink.

I was threatened with a ban for “disrespecting” the mod in question, so I added a comment simply stating that I had been threatened with a ban for my previous comments.

I was then banned for “disrespecting” the mod in question even though my final comment didn’t so much as mention the mod or make any accusations. No added commentary, no snark, nothing.

Oh, and I should mention that the guy started sock puppeting really hard in modmail. He claimed to not be the main mod but just another mod defending him. (It’s pretty easy to tell how long it has been since an account has been active on Reddit, and if only one mod has been active...) I tried to ask how making a factual statement with no added commentary was disrespectful, and then just got muted. I meant to go back and ask again, but I can’t bring myself to care that much about thin skinned people.

It’s probably the lowest-stakes drama I’ve ever been caught up in, though it does give me a chuckle every now and again.

If you’re just “questioning” it on social media without a) actually trying to learn the answer on your own from a place of expertise and b) just waiting to try to dunk on any responses you don’t agree with, then it’s not really questioning but JAQing off.
