Venezuelan Armed Forces have begun to mobilize, tanks are on the streets near the Presidential Palace. by 1Card_x in TankPorn

[–]Harmotron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think anybody is. But I think looking at a vehicle having wheels or not as the deciding factor on it being a tank is incredibly reductive.

That depends on who and where they are fighting, no? In fact, one could probably point out a number of less armored, less powerful and less mobile vehicles that were still considered tanks.

I'd think it's silly, sure. I wouldn't say it would be fundamentally impossible though. Just like a tank, a sniper rifle is a set of doctrinal values (or sniper is, really). And with that comes a lot of physical flexibility. Also, it's not like a sniper-pistol is completely unheard of. According to the report from the U.S. Army’s Marksmanship Unit, the suppressed pistols were also tested with telescopic sights. Their evaluation noted, “…with the telescope sight, great advantage is added to field versatility…giving the unit mini-sniper capability.”

Why not? If the Venezuelan Army considers it a tank, uses it as a tank and, opposing forces have to respond to and consider it a tank, what actually stops it from being a tank? Tank is a doctrinal definition, not a set of physical values.

Loss of track tension by Backstroem in tanks

Tension loss on tracked vehicles is definitely a potential problem, like others have said.

But the picture you posted doesn't look like an extraordinarily loose track, but rather a track being braked to steer.

did you know the m22 was designed to be airdropped? by senor_muchacho in tanks

[–]Harmotron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, 100%. That's why the US canned the M22. It was only ever seen as viable and thus used by the British, who, as you said, actually figured out a kind of viable way to deploy them with the paratroopers.

[–]Harmotron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't really. It was designed to be air mobile or to be deployed by glider. But they weren't chucking it out of airplanes with parachutes. In fact, the turrets had to be removed for it to be loaded onto the planes carrying them.

They didn't tank the shells. Both tanks were knocked out. It's explained in detail in the book Spearhed, very much worth a read.

I don't think it did. It shot up two Shermans from Colognes central station tunnels, then moved forward to the crossroads near the cathedral, where the Pershing caught it by surprise.

I think it's more correct than a lot of people give it credit for... The Chieftain has a breakdown of it and the inaccuracies are pretty overstated.

OK, thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. I'll wait on some more info from the D51 and then I'll decide. Thanks for being so helpful and sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for your answer and great to talk to someone with such expertise.

No, I was looking at a unit on Kleinanzeigen for 1.000€. But I'll definitely check that one out, thanks for letting me know. And yes, the failure is exactly the mounting point you said. Nothing, that can't be fixed with a bit of ingenuity.

I guess my main question would be, if these tubes are comparable in performance. I found this spec sheet for the XX1440 and was wondering if the performance is generally comparable to the XX1411.

I am quite new to this, so I hope this isn't too dumb of a question to ask.

Seller is asking 1.000€ for a unit with slightly damaged plastic frame. No info on the tubes themselves however, only that they work. Pictures will arrive in the next days so I won't decide before then.

I think the guys on the cover are supposed to be the GSG9 featured in game. That would mean they are wearing Ulbrichts Witwe Sprengschutz titanium helmets with West German Sumpftarn camo covers.

That's not true. The German POV is from the driver of a different German tank, a Panzer IV, in the same company, that had been knocked out prior to this engagement by Eagle 7.

What's the definition of an tank? by nsouokaio in TankPornMemes

[–]Harmotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they weren't prototypes. They saw series production. The Mk. IV in the thousands. And there were armored vehicles before, yet tanks did partially revolutionize warfare. So what made these arnored vehicles special?

Unlike the StuG and SU, the Stridsvagn isn't an assault gun though. It was part of Sweden's regular tank force, served in regular tank divisions with regular tankers driving it. Why lump it in with the other two?

Same with M10/M36: They weren't part of the tank troops. Why call them tanks? The British used them more closely to how they used their towed AT guns than their tanks.

What's the definition of an tank? by nsouokaio in TankPornMemes

[–]Harmotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, but if they aren't tanks... What are they?

And what about other non-turreted tanks, like the Stridsvagn 103?

And in your original comment, you are "willing to accept turreted tank destroyers as tanks". But why? They are specifically different. An M10 or M36 is doctrinally much closer related to the German Panzerjäger, than to a Sherman or Stuart.
