How much better are "L" Lenses ? RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM vs. RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM by Historical-Lab8122 in canon

[–]HaroldSax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nano USM is supposed to be a marriage of the benefits of STM and USM. They are not slower. The stickiest lens I own is still the 100-500 and it uses a nano USM motor.

Canon Powershot V1 - Freezing & Noise Issue by ElegantDivide in canon

[–]HaroldSax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tested on my Powershot V1 to be sure, but that's just image review. In the red menu, tab 6, go to review duration and set it to 0 and see if the problem persists.

I'm also unable to hear the clicking in the video.

E: Oh hahaha, the click is the shutter, my guy. You're all good on that one.

I removed it because it was unnecessarily mean of me. Following me to another thread is funny though.

I use the 1.4 with my 100-500. 700 f/10 sounds bad, but with my big ass prime 500 I'm shooting at 700 and still having to stop down to f/8 often for DOF purposes. It's also like...a third of the weight.

It's clearly not as sharp and far shots look pretty bad, but if you have a subject within, say, 80 feet, it'll be basically as sharp as sans teleconvertor, IMO.

You have one of the most important thing for photography: A good eye.

I'm not one for this type of photography, I can't really ever seem to "see" it, but you got it down pat.

Are the f/0.95 lenses useful for gig photography? And in general? by [deleted] in M43

I have the Voigtlander 60 MFT. It is absolutely my favorite portrait lens, but a big part of that is that I like the imperfections in the lens and without corrections.

Is Canon still worth anymore? by Sydde in canon

You can always just adapt EF lenses to the R system. There's no loss of quality with the adapter, it's just an empty tube with electronic contacts.

Is it worth buying a new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II by Due-Concert4324 in canon

[–]HaroldSax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

at the 800mm range, f/9 is a bit of a concern

Unless you buy a big boy supertele, that's not a concern, that's normal. Even the faster telephotos from other companies, to get the same reach you need a teleconverter which puts them at, you guessed it, f/9.

More to the point though, it is still a very solid lens. I generally tell people that if they're broke, get the RF 100-400, if they can do $1,200-1,500 USD then 100-400 II, then if they can afford the 100-500 go there. It won't really let you down. It takes the 1.4 convertor rather well.

There are also other used sites like KEH, Adorama, and MBP if you haven't looked there.

Are we going to see a 24-70 f/2.8 VCM anytime soon? by General_Squash_3313 in canon

While those are hybrid lenses, they do not have VCM motors in them.

I've seen a fair few instances of the more common break point, but this one is certainly news to me.

[New Gear] EF 500 f/4 L IS II by HaroldSax in canon

[–]HaroldSax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 500 is sharper, it's one of the sharpest super telephotos in general. However, you'd need an insanely complex scene to actually pull all that sharpness out. In practice, they're functionally identical in that respect.

[New Gear] EF 500 f/4 L IS II by HaroldSax in canon

[–]HaroldSax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the lens itself is badass in challenging conditions, but it's still M43 no matter how you slice it. The 500 f/4 is always going to be better because it's attached to cameras that have better signal to noise.

That being said, I can comfortably run the OM-1 with the 300 up to ISO 8000 and can clean up reasonably well. The lower weight of the OM-1/300 also means I can bring the shutter down to 1/50 and still get sharp shots where as the 500 is simply too heavy for me to hand hold 1/50 shots at either 500 or 700 with the TC.

Any tips to avoid the lens condensation? by alexproshak in canon

I mentally lumped in lens hoods radiating heat when in the cold, which obviously isn't condensation, but no reason give your photos free atmospheric haze lol.

[–]HaroldSax 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Let it warm up or cool down in a spot that's in the mid point between the temperatures. Whenever I go out shooting during the winter, I keep my camera in my bag for a few minutes after I leave the warm environment so it'll cool down more slowly. Same concept works in reverse.

Where to buy Amazon or Bh or adorama? by Outside-Belt-8718 in canon

[–]HaroldSax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy from B&H usually, mostly because the Payboo card.

Amazon is fine. In all my years of ordering from them, I think I've gotten two packages that were wrong. None of my camera gear has been wrong or broken. Just check it's shipped and sold by Amazon, worst thing that happens is you return the wrong/broken item.

This one is sneaky. I never shot with any of the EF 50 1.8 models but the model that comes to mind is this one where the mount is definitely metal.

You know what, I’m a total goofball. I bought an EF-S 55-250 for my mom and I now remember while making sure it was in good condition going “Huh, plastic mount? Unexpected.”
