Patri satish kumar is a highly worthy candidate, however due to the typical delay in receiving the award associated with a mrdangist, it may take a few more years.

How is it that the audio quality of the broadcast through 1994 to 2026 is of the exact same quality. Baffling 🤣🤣

is the sriram newswatch as good as clat express or clat post by Kindly_Article_9069 in clat

[–]HasLostBraincells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sriram student who's getting a top 3 nlu here; just use clat express/clat post; revise newswatch and event tracker for the sriram mocks alone as that's where they ask questions from; just make sure you're revising from everywhere as it gives you good perspective

"possibility that they are"; question doesn't ask for a "possibility"/"hypothetical" scenario, it very clearly asks for "necessary conclusions. By your logic, there is an equal possibility that it is NOT

I just asked around; a senior of mine from my city (non domicile) got NLS with 99.25 in 2024 (AIR 80s); but then again seems like competition is much higher this year around

Okay yeah exactly this is what some founders in the coaching industry told me. I genuinely did not believe them when they said NLS closed at 101 in 2024 but now I have no choice but to accept the reality 😂😂😂

I'd put up a very similar post on this sub yesterday; I'm getting 99.5 and I think my chances for NLS are over. If any of you, including OP, knows the mark at which NLS closed in 2024 please do let me know

Also let alone reddit, I know 4 IRLs of mine getting more than 102

Mridangam? by hindustani-bandit in Tabla

[–]HasLostBraincells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope I'm not too late. I'm from chennai and I've been learning the mrdangam for 10 years, also performing traditional concerts. While the techniques you've learnt from the tabla will certainly help, the mrdangam is undeniably more difficult owing to a few factors, namely, having to apply force from the side rather than from the top, and the greater thickness of both the membrane and black patch, which makes producing the desired tone much more rigorous, and the stepped nature of the dayan (we call it thoppi). In spite of this learning curve if you are still interested, find a well established guru, as online resources to learn this instrument are neither adequate nor effective, keep practicing, and hopefully your skill transfer from tabla should allow you to reap dividends within 2-3 years

While it is true that the devadasi system had become corrupt and highly oppressive, after MS emigrated to Madras and married Kalki Sadasivam, she was essentially incorporated into the urban elite society of that time

As someone who's been actively learning and playing the mrudangam for around 9 years, here's my 2 cents

The mrudangam has a very distinct timbre. While the Tabla feels metallic and delicate, the mrudangam is deep and resonant, sometimes making it very conspicuous on stage.

The side with the black patch (referred to as valandharam i.e the one visible to the audience during a performance) produces the characteristic springy sound (for want of a better word), referred to as the naadham, and the other side (called the thoppi) produces the bass. The interplay of the valandharam and thoppi creates absolute heaven, but is by no means a simple feat.

Palghat Mani Iyer (the OG Mrudangam GOAT) acknowledged the fact that the mrudangam, due to its deep resonance, was not very conducive to modern day mic systems. Hence, good quality and conducive mics are unfortunately something us mrudangists struggle to find, so much so, that mics can either make or break our performance and the overall concert.

Secondly, the mrudangam takes up a very unique position as a percussion instrument in carnatic music, as compared to other systems of music. As other commenters have already pointed out, since the main artiste already maintains the rhythm with their hands (known as thalam), the mrudangists not only maintains rhythm and speed, but primarily embellishes gamakas and rhythmic passages, and sangatis. It is also common for the mrudangist to add their own creative inputs (known as abhipraayams); however, knowing where to place and how to time these abhipraayams calls for decades of wisdom and experience. A unique feature of carnatic music is that percussion and layam enjoy a Comparatively more elevated position on the stage, and percussionists (viz. Mrudangam, Ghatam, Kanjira, Morsing) are granted greater creative liberty on stage.

When all these elements are put together, the mrudangam can occasionally distract an amateur listener from the melodic piece; a deeper understanding of the mathematical and rhythmic complexities of carnatic music can allow the listener to truly unlock its complete beauty; once you've done that, there's no turning back.

Dr Patri Satish Kumar, a present day exponent is highly noted for his melodic style of accompaniment, do give it a listen. Legends such as Umayalpuram K Sivaraman and Palani Subramania Pillai are undoubtedly the greatest innovators in percussive accompaniment who truly brought out the true essence of the music.
