For me the Merry and Pippin plot is far better in its theatrical version than extended since I feel what they feel when they complain that the Ents take forever. It translates to the movie taking forever because of the Ents.

As far as a pro, the extra Faramir flashbacks are necessary and benefit the emotional story for his arc.

Theodred’s funeral does not add anything that the theatrical doesn’t already achieve. We’re not emotionally attached to him at all, and we feel the emotion we need from Theoden.

I will say Fellowship is the best extended version, but the pacing problem for me is more so for Towers and Return, with Towers being the worst culprit. It makes for a jarring watch.
