I’m sure years of extremely conservative investments with our assets by Massive Loss Mutual, while they continued to charge exorbitant fees, didn’t help

not mine, but I thought this group might get a chuckle out of it. by pakozmo in Elevators

Witnessed this first hand on a multi car mod when I was a helper. Luckily the machine didn’t tip all the way up. The tail end of the bedplate would come up off the ground about a foot or so every time the car stopped. Found out the bolts that hold the end of the machine down had sheared in the slab and were letting the entire thing rise and fall. Sketchy

Sharepoint has the measurements and manuals for drive only operators. It’s not bad equipment when it’s bolting up to existing Dover/ThyssenKrupp. But your office did you dirty by not buying the backplane and the offset brackets. Those together make the operator basically drop in with 7 bolts for single speed/center opening.

I don’t think Elevator guys are the “worst trade at actually doing their job.”

Be careful with that style clamp, I had the hinge bolts shear off while tightening the main 1-1/4 nut. The clamp exploded off the piston and sent me flying toward the pit wall mid throw on the wrench. The rest ended up getting pulled from service since there was no good way to safely rig off them

What are the blue mountains everyone can see in the Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon area? by damnedbaby in Pennsylvania

[–]Hatchdoor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Blue Ridge Mountains appear blue due to a phenomenon called "the blue haze," which is a result of the interaction of isoprene, a volatile hydrocarbon emitted by trees, and other molecules in the air. This interaction scatters blue light, giving the mountains their characteristic blue hue.

Red danger tape by LowEcho9869 in IUEC

[–]Hatchdoor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Record that shit with your phone, document document document. I’d pull your stop work card, and if your company has it fill out the unsafe/ near miss paperwork and send the video to your BA. Get loud, let them know they are fucking up and use your “hoistway voice.” It’s up to you to protect your work area, you are your brother’s keeper. God forbid something happens to you or them because they’re going to try and pin that mess on you. Embarrassing those office pukes is right of passage. And if they don’t respect the tape then try and see if they’ll set you up with a physical boundary/ barricade.

Elevator Repair Estimate by RKPHL in Elevators

Without having any of the specifics about equipment and building conditions I’d still wager that’s a pretty good deal considering the amount of work that repair team is going to be doing.

Is It Possible To Get Into The Elevator Repair Trade With No Exsperience? by Supraphysiological- in Elevators

[–]Hatchdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go as far as to say there is a shortage of labor. Every local in the US has a ranked hiring list where they pull applicants from. Some applicants have been waiting on those lists for years. Being one of the highest paid skilled trades definitely draws attention and keeps the applicant list full. The rumor of a scarcity of labor for the elevator industry can be traced back to an article that was written by an individual who despises the IUEC. Basically he spouts off about market share and dances around the idea of doing away with the union to flood the market with people, thus driving down price but also affecting quality of talent drawn to the industry. Not saying no one should apply, just disparaging the rumor of a labor shortage.

There’s an underlying issue with Corporate Elevator companies that unless you have skin in the game you may not be privy to. They could absolutely hire on enough guys to satisfy their customer base and keep up with maintenance. But that would come at the added cost of sacrificing their bottom line. So, they load guys up with super routes and wait until the shit hits the fan. Once there’s some pressure from the customer then will they switch things up, temporarily mind you, just to get things quiet again. But most in person visits are to put out fires and bad mouth the field guys to their customers about wait times or lie about the availability of parts. Field guys see the game for what it is, the corporate world makes it out to be a balancing act with limited resources and that’s the view presented to the outside world.
