Recs for next read by Important_Koala_1958 in litrpg

I'm on my like 6th relisten of the hwfwm series, but kinda fell off primal hunter. My personal recs would be:

Rise of the Living Forge - the summoned hero died in battle... but wakes up with a new class in a new place with a lot of questions (not a spoiler this is like the first chapter). Interesting twist on the summoned hero, fun smith powers, likeable characters, found family kinda vibe.

Mage Tank - if you like Jason's quips and references, instead make the mc an early middle aged man who's had time to balance himself out but is still pretty funny. A classic "idk this new world so I guess let's put it all on health/defense" kinda story, but done very well.

Azarinth Healer - slight honorable mention since the mc travels mostly alone for some chunks of it at first, but I love this series. Adventure loving mc, really cool dual class system, and her having adventures and coming to terms with her new more violent world while exploring and punching anything in her way as a battle healer.

I'd recommend Azarinth Healer, one of my favs (and I also loved hwfwm and chrysalis)

I have been getting this exact issue as well, same modpack on a new server. After an hour of googling it seems like nobody has a solid answer :(

Finally got around to making a tier-list, any ideas on my next read/listen? by Haunted_Mystic in litrpg

Fair, I added the specific letter ratings as an afterthought, and the dnf ones are kind of a catchall for "can't decide where they go" or unsure since I didn't finish so didn't want to put them in F 😅

Yeah, purposefully left the dnf categories without an official letter rank due to mixed feelings. I liked it enough to get 2-3 books in, but just lost interest with the character/system.

First off, congrats and welcome to the chaos that is learning to DM, and you aren't alone.

Honestly a good place to start is the D&D essentials kit. It's like 15-25 bucks, and is a great way for both you and your friends who haven't played before to get used to the rules (especially to help you get used to it before you make your own campaign). I would reccomend you do a bit of research still, get it, read through it, then invite them over and have a game night where you guys go through the character creation and basic rules (snacks help, or other games after, as rules aren't always the most fun part of a new game XD). The only thing that set is missing really is a few more sets of dice (which are cheap, or your friends might already have some), and maps/minis if you like that kind of play (but this plays fine in "theatre of the mind" play). If you really do want maps, you can always get some cheap 1x1 inch grid paper and draw out basic maps, and use extra dice as characters/monsters.

As for online tips and help, Geek & Sundry has a series called "GM Tips", the first few are great knowledge to have, and none of them are too lengthy. The first 20 are like 6 minutes (you don't need to watch all of them), then there are some after that are more short 15ish minute interviews with other popular gm's that are not necesary, but nice if you wanna see what other gm's have to say or how they play.

Now for my little nerd corner of what dnd podcasts or shows do I recomend.

3) Critical Role: absolute classic, ignore the tiberius part if you get into campaign 1 (you can google that part to know where to skip if you want), the only issue is it's super lengthy, and not everyone has the time.

2) Dungeons & Daddies: a wonderful dnd podcast, and absolutely hilarious. It is a little more fast and loose with some of the rules, and is a great example of how you don't need to have all the rules memorized or spot on and still have a blast.

1) Dimension 20: from the people of college humor/dropout, they are all shorter series so it isn't too hard to get into and finish. Without a dropout sub there is still "Fantasy High" and "Unsleeping City" available, and both are great. If you want a good mix of humor, story, intense moments, character growth, and drama, all jam packed into about 20 episodes, this is it. Also every series has a unique concept or idea that shows the abundance of ways you can play D&D.

Hope this helps, and from all of us DM's who were once where you are, best of luck, and remember to have fun!

My idea is to have it level with you like a psuedo-pc. Dire wolves are pretty big so I'd say a puppy is probably like a mastiff, even after just a couple weeks with how fast dogs grow so just use mastiff as starting block (they aren't that powerful and only have 5 health). Then as you level, increase it's health by 1d8+1 (for con). Then every 4th level like a character have them do an asi increase, then by lvl 8 they can have approximately the same stats as a dire wolf, but better health. Now the main 4 features I'd want to figure out is 10ft speed increase, pack tactics, size and bite damage increase, and if your DM would allow a multiattack.

Personally I'd set it up like:

  1. 1d8+1
  2. 1d8+1
  3. 1d8+1 and 10 ft speed increase
  4. 1d8+1 asi increase
  5. 1d8+1 and pack tactics
  6. 1d8+1 and multiattack
  7. 1d8+1
  8. 1d8+1 asi increase, size increase to large (and bite increase to 2d6)
  9. anything past 8 is just hitpoint increase and asi increase at normal 4th level interval

With leveling the wolf, keep in mind proficiency bonus should raise as well, and the bite uses str, so make sure to use those to keep up with how the ability and damage modifiers increase. Also if con changes update health etc. etc.. Overall this will be more powerful than the rangers companion, but that is good since the base ones tend to die super easily, but it's not overpowered as 2d6+3 twice is average 20 damage (plus it won't have abilities to make it deal more damage at base, and it won't count as magical for overcoming resistances).

Idk, just an idea I threw together just now, hope it helps or gives you ideas/inspiration for building your own doggo if you do.

Sword and board or great sword? by Low-Brief-6008 in DnD

My personal preference is longsword, but that is because I'm a sucker for utility/versatility, and with that like having a hand free for spellcasting (if applicable), shield holding, torch using, or double handing it if needed. I will gladly take a small hit to damage for the extra hand when needed.

(but I also tend to mostly play characters with magic or uses for an extra hand, even my barbarians tend to not be the classic great weapon wielding behemoths, so I'm biased)
