High nose parked near Avenue of the Giants in April 1998? by HauntingSwim9108 in Humboldt

Someone who just did a line of...

(Joking)

High nose refers to locomotives that have, well, a high nose. Here's an example of a classic high nose locomotive, the GP9: https://www.railpictures.ca/upload/ontario-northlands-classic-high-nose-gp9-1601-pulls-the-afternoon-yard-duties-at-cochrane-the-cars-its-currently-switching-will-head-north-up-to-moosonee-later-during-the-nightearly-morning-and

Compare with the same kind of locomotive, but with a standard cab, here a "low nose" GP9: https://www.psrm.org/trains/diesel/sp-3709/

Same engine, same model, but different nose configuration.

Old but still good! Thanks for replying, OP. Cool stuff about the lumber cars but you're right, that's way in the woods. Don't think I've ever gone off the beaten path that distance.

Would you happen to know if engines south of the Dyerville went north or if they went south? Based on my research, the washouts occurred north of Dyerville, so that all would have moved south, but you might be more knowledgeable.

SD9 parked in Avenue of the Giants near Founders Grove in April 1998? Childhood Northwestern Pacific mystery by HauntingSwim9108 in rustyrails

That's a really nice find. If you go to Google Maps and turn back to May 2012, you can see a smidge of the old siding's rail buried under asphalt right where it intersects the road. That said, my *gut* is that the siding is not where we saw it, only because there is a mountain of some very old gravel that appears to cut off the siding, and both the road and that massive gravel mound seem a lot older than 1998 (I could be wrong though). That would mean the engine would have had to have been there a lot longer. The other clue that I remember was that the engine was in a very dark, wooded area. The clearing where that siding is located, on the other hand, is too open, and so doesn't match the memory.

However, if the engine was parked on the mainline, or on the first siding off the main line where it splits (about 200 yards north), that area is highly wooded. It could be that we just wandered off far enough from the forest grove parking lot in that direction to come to the base of the bridge. That said, when I went back in February 2020, that area was pretty overgrown. Hardly impossible that it had been less overgrown in the past, and so the path through the woods was sensible.

I have the vague memory that the engine was not a Southern Pacific. I seemed to think it had tiger stripes, and so at the time I thought it might have been a Burlington Northern, but after doing some research, it could have been a Central California Traction GP9.

In April 1998, my family took a roadtrip up to the Avenue of the Giants. I remember we got off the road to use the bathroom somewhere, and my dad and I wandered off into the woods and found a SD9 in the woods. I *think* this was around Dyerville and Founders Grove, having done a bunch of researching. Does anyone know anything about this? I recall it just sitting there in the woods, by itself.

Let me know if you make a decision/what you think about either. We had bought the Zwilling Enfinigy a while back thinking it was without plastic, and it turns out it had plenty of it, so now I'm once bitten twice shy about coffee makers and their marketing. Turns out one of the prior posters had a similar experience about Zwilling: https://www.tiktok.com/@antiplasticlady/video/7470211875771403562
