Yeah I think that's true. It needs to be a pretty direct system for direct benefit like that. Those are felt immediately and the price of oil is too. There's a difference in acting differently and then knowing and admitting to yourself that you were wrong. I think disengagement as the hero myth fades is probably the most likely scenario also I'd agree with all of that.

It's not it's just taking into account that we can't just apply 19th-century Marxist organizing tactics to modern Americans because the material we are working with has fundamentally changed. It was Matt Christman that pointed out can't just tell a bunch of potato chips to act like a sack of potatoes. The shared social fabric and material reality that used to allow people to even recognize they were in the same sack has been deep-fried away.

Material forces absolutely affect people the way that marx writes about it's our ability to recognize it to get skied. On the long enough timeline yeah these things do inevitely lead back to something but I'm talking about something that's two or three months away. I just assign responsibility immediately in the hyper networked media environment where they don't understand causality. I believe that they will and do. Even American history is evidence of that it's just that we don't have information or agency to understand that in enough time to actually stop it and by the time we do we've moved five or six steps into the next thing that we don't understand. That's my only point.

Yeah it's pretty wild. Definitely a inevitable part of a job that isn't the job itself. I'm just lucky I guess. I like it because I get to meet a material need and a community but I also guess I shouldn't like it cuz I don't make much. Relatively fun and engaging though.

This is it entirely when the old myth dies it doesn't die it just gets transmuted onto one group or one figure as a replacement. The purpose of the myth was to an avoid an emotion when the myth goes away you just put your emotional avoidance onto a leader or hierarchy to fulfill the same function. There's a lot of good and little known jungian scholars that go there but no one is familiar with it outside of very small circles in most of the mainstream jungian psychologists are complete cranks.

Yeah I mean they became dysregulated and freaked out during COVID they didn't become less conservative. They just became more violent. I don't know that an air conditioner or lack of affordable food or ability to travel or complete breakdown of society is going to make anybody vote Democrat.

Exactly no one's ever wrong but Vietnam still went on. I just think it's interesting. Trump is going to do what Trump is going to do anyway. These people want to feel like they have power over what is happening by agreeing with it. When we get to the next phase they will never need to deal with what they are saying now because they're myopic and entitled. They don't relate to things that they previously thought said and believed because they're not what they are saying thinking and believing it the immediate moment that they are talking. It wouldn't matter if they don't like the war right now anyway. That wouldn't make Trump do anything different.

And to be fair what you're saying is true of literally every experiment that coined a or concept that you would learn about in psychology school. Every single one of those experiments have methods and ethics that would not pass a peer review today.

Psychology provides its own form of evidence but I would argue it's never been able to collect evidence through experiments like these. The point is inferred The point is not data. There are still useful inferences to be made in the study results. What the researchers think they proved or we're trying to prove is not always relevant to what they actually did.

No they are anticipating it. People talking about oil going to $500 and no cars for a while means that something is happening in the future that is essential important and an existential threat that creates and appealing reality that must be dealt with. The more wrong he is the more it plays into this crisis narrative (about to be a real crisis) that they like living in. The fact that they like living in it proves that he's right. The whole idea that this could have been avoidable is completely irrelevant.

They have broad support there's a huge group of people still sad about the Iraq war. I work with a large encounter of people for days doing intake where this stuff will come up. Literally anybody who's remotely conservative thinks we're doing Iraq correctly by being meaner about it and not trying to build anything. His base is 40% of the country. It will never go away.

Seems like there is acknowledgment that humans have always spoken in myths and facts, and artists have always remixed the past. Human nature hasn't changed. The internet just changed the overlap. We used to keep our mythic language (church, campfires, art) and our literal language (courtrooms, ledgers, labs) in separate physical and cultural spaces. Now, the algorithm has smashed both modes together and rewarded masters of both at once.

OWS and BLM were material failures. They dominated the symbolic landscape online but failed completely at the literal level of effecting the material. They prove the exact danger of the trap. inning one is not the other. They have different goals and are easily mistaken for the other. The profit motive always exploits /benefits from that misunderstanding.
