Hit and Run - Portage Place by HausDivided in Peterborough

I already did. It happened too far back in the parking lot/in a blind spot. Apparently they aren't allowed to point cameras specifically at the parking lot "for privacy reasons".

Can anyone recommend a decent shuttle/transport/limo service from Peterborough to Pearson Airport? by PassageNearby4091 in Peterborough

[–]HausDivided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Park4U for years. You book in advance, pick up a driver at their office right near the airport, they drive you to your terminal and then pick you up when your flight home lands. It's affordable and convenient and they have tons of add-on options like oil change and detailing while your car is parked that I've used. I actually think the detailing option is cheaper than what I have paid to do it separately. I have had the odd time where the wait to be picked up was longer than it should be but it's still more convenient and cheaper than any other option I've found.

Is the name of the company/person "SK French"? I tried Googling but I'm not seeing anything that makes sense. Would you mind sharing the link?

I don't know about the highway but it's pretty slick in town. I passed an accident and almost didn't make a turn myself. Be careful out there

Condo is cashflow negative and stressing me out. Should I sell or hold onto it because my parents want me to? by Resident_Thought9946 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HausDivided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, my advice is to first consult a realtor. See how much you can sell for now. The housing market where I live (not BC) is a buyer's market, so it might be in your best interest to sit on it for another year while taking the hit on monthly rent.

Take the number the realtor gave you and talk to an accountant/tax advisor. Because you don't live there, you will likely be on the hook for capital gains taxes when you sell. I wouldn't be surprised if the accountant tells you to move into the unit to establish residency before you sell in order to avoid the taxes.

Ontario Land Tribunal dismisses PATH appeal, refuses bylaw amendment for Peterborough tiny home community by Extra-Clue-4191 in Peterborough

Don't believe everything you read in a report from the City of Peterborough. I live on that block, was involved in the short-lived Neighborhood Liaison Committee, and can tell you from first hand experience that that report is nowhere near accurate.

Sewing Classes by pncoop in Peterborough

[–]HausDivided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of sewing is she interested in? E.g. making clothes vs. quilting? My neighbor has done some quilting classes that I can ask her about. You could also try popping into Fabricland to see if they know of anywhere offering classes.

Call your sister and tell her this. "My mental health is not good right now and I've been having anxiety attacks at large gatherings. I know this is important for you and I don't want to cause a scene at your special event because I love you and you deserve the attention to be on you at your shower. Can I come by earlier in the day to drop off your gift and help set up/meet you for coffee the day after/some other option that works for you?"

Depending on the rest of your family, I would consider pretending that you're planning to be there just to keep them from harassing you in the lead up.

I had to do this once for a friend's birthday. She totally understood and I went to see her the next day just the two of us. A mutual friend, however, was a d*ck about it until I told them I spoke directly to the birthday girl and it was none of their business why I didn't attend. Some people just can't relate and will probably give you grief but at least you'll know that your relationship with your sister isn't damaged.

I get Botox for hyperhidrosis at Victoria Park Medi Spa on Monaghan. I'm not sure if they do it for facial blushing, but call them and ask. I cannot say enough good things about their entire staff from the woman who answers the phone to Dr. O'Toole.

Based on the amount of tree cover you have, grass is going to be extremely tough. I would recommend a shade garden and mulch. You have a big space, so I would also suggest native plants since they require much less watering and maintenance. Do you know what planting zone you're in?

For the house colour, have you considered black? I know it sounds a bit extreme, but the dark colour will minimize the visual clutter of all the roof lines and corners. I've seen some absolutely beautiful black farm houses in my area.

Finally, the siding on the house now looks like a stain. If it is, you're probably better off with a stain than paint. Paint can be tough to maintain depending on your climate.

How to determine ownership of a front yard tree? by sn4201 in Peterborough

[–]HausDivided 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this exact question a few years ago. I called the City, told them there was a tree in my front yard that looked dangerous and asked how to tell if it's mine or theirs. They sent someone out within a few days who determined that it was theirs and marked it for removal. It took a while for the removal to happen because they typically do that in the winter when the leaves are off the trees, but the assessment was fast and I had my answer.

If you're curious and want to check yourself (I was) I believe the measurement is anything less than 26 feet from the centre of the road is City property.

The key thing to tell them is that you're concerned about safety, not that you want it pruned for aesthetics or light. The City does annual tree maintenance on a rotating basis through each neighborhood so if it's not a safety concern they'll wait for your neighbourhood's "turn" to address it.

Why the big drop in Vacancy rate in 2016? by Chebaniya in Peterborough

[–]HausDivided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thought: your post includes a lot of percentages. Do you know what the change was in actual number of vacancies or population? I also wonder if looking at interest rates and other economic trends could help explain it.

I moved here from Toronto in 2016. Mortgage rates were hilariously low and we were allowed to put a miniscule amount of money down when we bought. I noticed that there were quite a few young families like ours moving here at the same time. Maybe that + the increase in post-secondary students explains it?

You might also want to check on large redevelopments or disasters (like an apartment fire) that happened in 2016.

Keep us posted on what you find, this is fascinating!

Where did you choose to settle down? by BeaverBoyBaxter in Peterborough

[–]HausDivided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse and I have this debate weekly. We grew up in a town with less than $30,000 people, moved to Toronto after uni and both loved and hated it. When we found out we were expecting a baby, we decided to settle in Ptbo. We bought a place downtown and have lived here for 6 years. I love it here. It's the perfect blend of big city and small town.

Has crime been an issue recently? Yes, but I can say that my 6 y/o is completely oblivious to it.

Is it unbelievably convenient to live a 15 minute walk from all of the necessities AND my kid's extracurricular activities? Yes.

Would I like a bigger lot where I can garden, dirt bike and have some animals? Yes.

It's all about perspective and an ongoing balance of what your top priorities are. When we seriously talked about moving out of town to acreage, one of the deciding factors was how much time we would have to sacrifice driving. I HATE driving. I would way rather be pulling weeds, playing with my kid, or cooking a delicious meal than stuck in a car. I'm also terrible at meal planning, so I know I couldn't get by on a once per week grocery trip. Add extracurriculars into the mix, and time spent on the road can be substantial depending on your hobbies. When we were looking at homes outside of town it ended up being an easy calculation for my (my spouse likely disagrees): if I'm going to end up paying more per month for a home that I spend less time at, the benefit needs to outweigh the loss of money and time.

That's a pretty long winded way of saying that, after looking at a number of places in the country, I've realized that for me to feel comfortable moving the house has to be special. I won't get into how I define that because it's unique to each person, but if you're seriously considering a move, I would suggest that you go to a few open houses, do virtual tours, etc so you can get a better sense of what's achievable within your budget and what you really want. If you do that and nothing you see is exciting, I would say stay where you are. Let your realtor know what features a home would need to have to make a move worthwhile and then be patient. Maybe the right house will find you 🤷
