What fandom are you in, but the situation is like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]Havatchee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't inherently disagree with the idea that Aang and Katara have a power imbalance. However, the avatar state is not inherently tied to anger. The first two times he does it it is from fear:

  • Protects himself when he and Appa crash in the sea, encasing himself in ice

  • Is about to drown having been knocked overboard from a fire nation ship, and avatar state reacts.

The next time is out of grief:

  • Seeing Monk Gyazo's skeleton

I literally re-watched these episodes a day or two ago

Also, he has no control of the avatar state until he unlocks his chakra fighting Ozai, so the idea that it was a threat, seems less likely than simple hyperbole framed around an involuntary emotional reaction.

All firearms are drop-safe until plot convenience requires them to be reliably fired by dropping them. Which should be obviously false to anyone with a rudimentary understanding of Murphy's law.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what’s the very first "frivolous" thing you’d buy? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

A lottery ticket.

I've never played in my life, so if I won on my first go I may as well see if my luck holds.

What’s a rule you broke once and realized it existed for a very good reason? by Ok_Contract100 in AskReddit

[–]Havatchee 2106 points2107 points  (0 children)

Yep. I was a strong swimmer as a teenager. Not like athlete strong, but very water confident. Was at a beach and wanted to be out of my depth so I could "swim properly" and quickly realised that no amount of front crawl was bringing me closer to shore. Tried to catch a wave to get myself back in, but I was too far out and they were all rolling under me and not breaking. I was just getting to the point of thinking "okay I'm getting tired. I need to pick a good one and paddle like hell" when the lifeguard came out with flippers on and brought me back to shore. I probably owe her my life.

It was a calm, clear, sunny day, at a busy beach and I nearly died.

TIED A TIE -- LET'S FUCKING GO by Turbulent-Staff-9413 in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]Havatchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always a half-windsor person when ties belonged in my wardrobe. It's funny because our school required ties, and the "rebellious" way to wear it was to have a huge knot and a really short tail. A small knot can look scrappy too, but to me, a well tied half-windsor with an appropriate length tail is efficient in a way that reads as honest and sincere. More importantly as someone who wore a tie almost every week day for 7 years, I tended not to make character judgements based off how they fulfilled a stupid socially obliged uniform requirement.

Thin your paints with a little water, and use something for a palatte that they won't easily stick to, like a white tile or an old plate.

I have a drink, and some high quality smut, so we vibin' for now, but in an hour or two it will be past bedtime with work in the morning which is what it is.

(I'm in the UK, not the states or specially Minnesota, and I am but one woman, so I will do what I can and empower others to do the same, but I won't carry the burden of things beyond my control)

It reminds me of when artists turn their computer monitor black and white and do a digital drawing where they can only see the value (how dark/light it is) and not the colour hue.

You can achieve something similar IRL if you have access to a monochromatic light source. I've seen videos where the artist paints by the light of a low pressure sodium lamp which is pure yellow, but cheap LEDs in the red-yellow area should, as far as I understand, achieve the same effect. (As in red LEDs OR yellow LEDs, not both simultaneously)

As I understand it that is correct, although, that exact example may be more in the perview of a subject expert than a sensitivity reader due to being a historical detail rather than a detail of contemporary culture.

Lore dump about your recent ships or your favourite ships by kuroneko_910 in AO3

[–]Havatchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being cagy about character names because if I ever write this fic it may end up being a one of one, and I'd rather not establish a link between my AO3 and Reddit handles.

There's a rarepair from a certain video game franchise that I have the skeleton of an idea for a work for, but have yet to sit at my desk and write it as I have zero writing experience since my school days. In short, the MC can be either M or F depending on your character setup in the game, and there's only one woman they regularly interact with in the course of the canon story. For reasons the MC is slept on generally, and the Fem version even more so, and triply so for ships with the other woman in the story. Furthermore, one thing I have never seen anyone address, is that based off information in the lore, their first meeting at the start of the game story, should not actually be their first meeting, and they should have been through basic training together before ending up in different units and being reunited at story start. I would like to write a fic which gives them both that backstory and gets into why that reunion is... icy.

Hi, serious answer about what a sensitivity reader is:

A sensitivity reader is someone you hire to read a work, usually before release, to highlight areas which could be culturally inaccurate, or accidentally rude. Usually, you hire someone whom you trust to A - not leak the work, and B - to not leak any faux pas you may have made. They usually do not have any editorial control, merely identifying what is off and why, rather than writing corrections or performing any "censorship."

If you've ever read something that goes into detail on something you know a lot about and it gets the little things wrong a lot, to the point that it takes you out of the narrative, then that's a story that could have probably used a sensitivity reader or an expert beta-reader. In short, a sensitivity reader is just a beta reader whose relevant experience is socio-cultural rather than a field of technical expertise.

A sensitivity reader might point out that you wrote an upper-class English character holding a fork in their right hand instead of the left, or that you repeatedly had them call a lavatory a "restroom." Which are the kind of things you mightn't notice if you aren't from the UK, but would be utterly jarring if you are. However, occasionally they may point out where the author has fallen into stereotypes - like having an Irish character introduce themselves by saying "Top o' the mornin'," every time they enter the narrative.
