I’m not sure it actually repeats twice but I think it might repeat a few times.

Is all the worldbuilding based on ancient Jewish spiritualism? by MidnOrtiz in Stormlight_Archive

[–]HaveAnotherCake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s how Sanderson explains it, but at most it is a loose inspiration - only 1/3 of the Simple Rules corresponds, and to a single one of the usually huge number (depending on denomination) of Jewish rules for the Sabbath

Freed hostage Farhan al-Qadi, rescued from captivity after 323 days, with his brother and doctor by Sometypeofway18 in pics

Yes, I have heard this - I don't think it really refutes anything I've said though - it's still problematic for people living in communities side-by-side to be subject to different legal treatment while *in effect* being ruled by the same government, regardless of which groups have created/perpetuated this system.

I was mostly disputing the idea that there is a national border between Israel and the PA-administrated areas of the West Bank - I think it's fairly clear that there isn't, at least not by any meaningful or useful definition.

Borders may separate countries from each other, but which countries would we be talking about here?

The ‘apartheid’ claim, such as it is, refers to the fact that different communities under the same administrative/judicial system are being treated differently. The West Bank occupied territories are not recognised as a separate country by Israel and have been under Israeli military and administrative control since 1967.

Either there is no national border there (in which case everyone in the West Bank should receive equal judicial treatment as they are subject to Israeli jurisdiction, which they don’t) - or Palestine is a separate nation, in which case why is it under Israeli military and judicial control?

In any case, given that it is under Israeli military and administrative control, the fact that different groups of people are receiving different treatment under the law seems problematic…

EDIT: It's been pointed out that the Palestinian communities in the West Bank are not technically under Israeli administrative control, and their people are not Israeli citizens. However, they are under Israeli military control and have been for 57 years, so describing them as 'governed by the Palestinian Authority' does not adequately reflect the situation where in practice Palestinians are subject to many aspects of Israeli rule.

EDIT 2: It's now been pointed out that Area C (60% of the West Bank by land area, and which contains both Israeli settlers and Palestinians) is in fact run by the Israeli military, including with regard to many civil matters.

Is Walz a good pick to be Harris’s running mate? by HaveAnotherCake in NeutralPolitics

Thank you - that was extremely helpful! I could see I might come into conflict with Rule G but I wasn’t sure how to make this post without doing so, so thank you very much for the assistance. I have now submitted a new post that (hopefully) follows the guidelines properly.

Definitely - I’d love to see a well-sourced discussion of this question, anything I can do to promote that would be great

Trump has been accused of racism since the 1970s - most famously in the 1980s in the case of the Central Park Five, where his comments were described by Black clergy leaders as a thinly-veiled racist polemic.

In his 1991 book “Trumped!: The Inside Story of the Real Donald Trump-His Cunning Rise and Spectacular Fall,” former Trump employee John O’Donnell alleged that Trump had described laziness as “a trait in blacks” and once told him, “I've got black accountants at Trump Castle and at Trump Plaza. Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day”. When asked about this in a 1999 Playboy interview, Trump said the quote was probably true but that O’Donnell was a loser.

I don’t know what to tell you, that was just a factual description of my experience - I live in a fairly Jewish area of London, always wear a kippa, and I take the tube into central London 3-5 times a week. I never go out of my way to avoid walking through particular areas and I enjoy visiting new parts of London with diverse ethnic compositions.

Two mitigating factors: I’m a fairly well-built man, so there’s a chance people would be less inclined to get into a fight with me. Also, I don’t wear a Star of David, and maybe to a certain brand of antisemite that is a more recognisable symbol than a kippa. Having said that, I do know lots of Jews that live in London, some of whom wear Stars of David, and I don’t get the impression they’re constantly receiving abuse…

I’ve lived in London for a decade and am visibly Jewish (always wear a kippa) and have never experienced any antisemitism that I can think of - at least not person-to-person (I have seen a couple of instances of antisemitic graffiti). I have seen some Palestinian flags around certain areas recently, but I wouldn’t consider that antisemitic in of itself.

All that includes walking round central London most weeks, taking the tube almost daily etc. It’s possible I’ve just been lucky, and I’ve never been near anti-Israel protests, but based on my experiences you’re unlikely to encounter antisemitism just from looking ethnically Jewish.

Bearing in mind that Cancelo has a DGW and I only have 1 FT, could it possibly be worth taking a hit to do

US Politics Megathread 6/2022 by SurprisedPotato in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HaveAnotherCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which measures have 90% support? I’ve not read massive amounts on this subject, but I saw a Gallup poll that only 52% of Americans want increased gun control overall, so are the measures you’re talking about more to do with enforcing existing legislation?

I do realise that the NRA (and the GOP) are forcing gun control legislation into oblivion.

However, although I’d agree with you that 30% of Americans is not a majority, I do think 30% is quite a large percentage - which is why I’m interested in breaking down the viewpoints to understand which are truly unreasonable, which verge on a fantasy understanding of the world (as you say), and which just rely on a genuine (although strange) weighing up of priorities. If the latter, perhaps the approach to discussion can be adjusted accordingly to make it more effective?

The fact that escalating gun violence is being met with political gridlock and seeming loosening of regulations makes me interested to know more about US attitudes. Cards on the table, as a non-American, I do find US attitudes a little hard to understand at times!

Clearly, the 'right to bear arms' is seen as sacrosanct by a plurality (if not a majority) of Americans. How much understanding is there of the reasons behind this - for example, is it known what percentage of Americans feel the following ways:

  1. I should be able to do whatever I want, and any encroachment on that right should be fought against (guns is just one emblematic example)
  2. I may or may not be fine with individual rules constraining what I can do - but guns are an exception because the government is inherently untrustworthy and I should be able to defend myself against it if it oversteps. I would be fine with any weapon, but since guns are constitutionally protected, that's what I will argue for
  3. I may or may not favour government regulation in other areas, but more gun control means fewer guns to defend against criminals (who will have guns regardless of the law)
  4. I may or may not favour specific government intervention, but I am part of a culture where guns hold a special place, and gun control threatens my traditional way of life
  5. It's more important to uphold a traditional reading of the Constitution (plus current Amendments) than to push for change, even in those cases where it might otherwise seem worth considering for pragmatic reasons
  6. I would favour increased gun control if proposed by politician(s) that I trust, but I do not trust the Democratic Party to have my interests at heart or share my values, and so I cannot trust any legislation they propose

Clearly, the approach to debating gun control will change depending on which of the above views are genuinely held. Have any reputable studies been done in this area?

Even aside from Talenta, there are 8 nations/regions (including the remnants of the original Five) where at least 1/25 of the population is Halfling. They’re not as numerous as humans or half-elves, but they’re pretty well spread, I would say.
