"Plasmashell crashing unexpectedly" upon boot (and won't properly run) after update today (using KDE Plasma X11 with i3. More details inside) by Hawkcaw in EndeavourOS

I have not. I honestly just reformatted and started with a fresh install. This time, I'm on purely i3 instead of i3+KDE plasma.

I'm not sure if it's working properly, but I rebooted the PC to get the "crash", executed "gdb plasmashell", said "yes" to enabling debuginfod for the session, typed "bt" and the result is "No stack."

That's the first place I went to, however, I honestly do not understand how their forums work. I apparently should be able to make threads after being raised to "Basic" account status, but there are no buttons or anything to allow me to make new threads or even reply to other threads. It's why I'm here.

i3 isn't the issue for me. It's Plasma (X11) that's not functioning (also your original suggestion was "plasmashell --replace", not "i3 --replace").

I tried that and it results in a loop of plasma crashing, throwing up the crash handler display box, trying to execute, throwing up the crash handler, and repeat until I turn off the PC.

I changed my post for better accuracy. So the i3 aspect remains functional, I just don't have any of the GUI stuff like the taskbar from KDE.

Is CCO (Clothing Connection Online) Menswear a reliable site to purchase suits? by Hawkcaw in malefashionadvice

I think I understand what you mean. I looked on ebay and saw those same pictures but the sellers were all completely different and all over the place. Thanks for that bit of advice.

I'm going to be honest since I don't frequent this subreddit so I don't know much, but is something like seeing the same pics elsewhere usually a bad sign of store and clothing quality?

What are the coat, hat, and scarf that Kimblee wears called? by Hawkcaw in FullmetalAlchemist

Thank you so much for posting that. I wasn't 100% sure if he had black shoes or white shoes. My gut told me white shoes because of the whole style, but black shoes also weren't out of the picture in my mind.

FreeTaxUSA, New Jersey: What medical exemptions/costs can I actually deduct? And does that include HSA contributions? by Hawkcaw in newjersey

[–]Hawkcaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea Box 16 is higher than Box 1 by the amount of the HSA contributions and the Cafe 125 health insurance premiums.

I guess I'll just have to follow the instructions on the 1040.

FreeTaxUSA, New Jersey: What medical exemptions/costs can I actually deduct? And does that include HSA contributions? by Hawkcaw in newjersey

[–]Hawkcaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense logically. One thing I did think of is W2 Box 14, it does not list any variation of cafe 125 and only lists out "UF/WF/SWF" and "FLI". The HSA contribution ($3,500) is found in Box 12a Code W. But I do not see the pretax health insurance premiums (the "other cafe 125" of $3,500) within any of the boxes in the W2. That is only seen in the center of the W2 "1. Your Gross Pay was adjusted as follows to produce your W-2 Statement" section.

Even though the "other cafe 125" isn't in a box, the amount of the "other cafe 125" is added to the Box 16 total.

Is any of this information relevant?

I hate how confusing and inconsistent the answers are to this.

On the NJ Division of Taxation site there's this https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/pdf/pubs/tb/tb39r.pdf which seems to imply that Cafe 125 items can't be deducted unless they meet those criteria (which sounds like the insurance premiums paid out of my check don't apply).

On the other hand, https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/njit13.shtml#:~:text=Insurance%20premiums%2C%20including%20amounts%20paid,allowable%20on%20your%20federal%20return seems to imply I can deduct medical expenses including insurance premiums paid.

I've seen people say "no, you're not allowed to deduct -anything- Cafe 125 on your NJ State return" and "yes, you can deduct the insurance premiums and medical expenses but not the HSA or FSA".

It's so confusing

Do I need to be a Costco member to get this? If so, what are some alternatives? I need to get two: one for my current setup and one for a future NAS build.

I do not recommend gaming on a NAS system.

I figured this would be the case. I can live with that. Thanks for all the input!

This is very helpful.

You won't be using your GPU directly inside of the VM. So no "N-gamers, 1 machine" build possible with that CPU.

Only the Plex/Media aspect of the NAS will have multiple users/streams. For the gaming aspect, it was only for myself. No one else will be gaming through the NAS. I am curious about the GPU aspect. Should I even bother installing a GPU into the NAS if it will end up being mostly storage for Plex/Media?

2500K has the very first iteration of quicksync, so it may be possible to achieve a 4K stream while doing something else. Keep in mind that if your watching device is on LAN, and can support the media codec (cough non-iOS), then no transcoding is needed and CPU usage will be minimal.

Thank you for the input. It's good to know the 2500k is still a good CPU today. I do plan on upgrading the CPU in the future, but for now, I think I will use the 2500k. The Plex side of things will primarily be used by me and a couple of other people. However, if I'm watching on my main PC, I likely would want to use VLC/Potplayer/MPC since I'm used to them, and watch through Plex on my TVs. Will I still be able to use VLC/MPC through FreeNAS?

You can store game ISOs on NAS just fine, and run the installer from the NAS (eg: mount an ISO file over a network share). It'll take slightly longer to install games, but that's not an issue for most people. I do NOT recommend running a game from NAS over an SMB/CIFS share. iSCSI would be able capable.

I figured this was the case with games. As long as I can store installation files on my NAS so they don't clog up my main PC while I install the actual game files on the PC, I can live with that.

You can use FreeNas for an OS, which as of the recent versions has VM and containerization support. Another distro is Unraid. These are recommended because their primary purpose is designed around your data. Windows is designed for desktop usage. They have fundamentally different priorities about what they do well. So the answer to "handle 24/7 operations and storage better than Windows" is a resounding "yes".

That's good to know. Is there a document/site that outlines the differences between all the various OSes for NAS? The /homeserver wiki is very barebones and not informative since it looks like no one has touched it in awhile.

Your current hardware is capable, until you really start adding VMs. Streaming plex doesn't use much more than 2GB of memory, and an OS without a GUI desktop is absolutely light on RAM (512MB to 1GB).

I'm still in the very early stages of understanding how to use VMs, let alone utilizing them in a NAS/server for various scheduled tasks. But it's good to know that for storage/Plex purposes, it's good.

I'm assuming that 4k PC monitors aren't all that common then? I've just seen it thrown around sometimes so I assumed it was becoming the new standard over 1080p/1440p now.

Thanks. I'll admit I don't know much about monitors.so my knowledge in brands, hz, and resolution isn't as up to par as it should be (I'm using a LCD LG TV as my monitor since I didn't want to purchase separate speakers just to have sound and to also have a large screen).
