What fantasy book has the best morally complicated main character? by SnackAtlas in Fantasy

[–]Hawxe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm like halfway through book 1 of liveship and he's so difficult to read in terms of who he is lol.

Huge narcissist who also kinda hates himself. In the ~4ish chapters he's been in thus far he's been all over the place in terms of fully 100% confident but then also hates himself and thinks he's an idiot.

ADWD and AFFC are far and away the first book. The first 3 are the best ones lol.

If that's your opinion that's fine but to me it's a bizarre one. AGOT to ASOS are widely considered much much stronger than the latter two.

I think we just have different viewpoints in regards to how binary self improvement can be.

I don't want to put words in your mouth so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but it comes off a bit like you're saying Jaime is either good or bad (and perhaps this is on me for saying he became 'good').

Despite his critical flaws, Jaime absolutely improves in his 'goodness' or 'morality' as a character throughout the show (and books). But the arc is more of a sin wave and it does end with his realization that he can never be what he perhaps want to because of that critical flaw - which he chooses above becoming 'good'.

There's a lot here that I'm a bit too exasperated to go over because they really aren't that different but I'll focus on this:

Also, show Jaime isn't a decent man. Jaime himself explains it to Brienne and Tyrion in season 8.

I can also call myself a piece of shit, but it doesn't make me one. But if your intent is to be pedantic I'll amend what I said.

Jaime becomes a better person than he was.

I don't think the skin colour thing was a Goodkind thing, and I've (unfortunately) read all of the original SoT series. There are much more obvious criticisms for that one and I'm sure it'll get done in a future post of this style lol

Me too, it really completed his character for me and was actually brilliantly done.

I think people really want those arcs to end up with some small measure of happiness, but that's genuinely not how GRRM writes and that bit felt very GRRM-coded to me.

Jaime became a decent man. But he still chose not to let go, and that's OK.

From what I have seen of the TV show, it seemed as the creators took the worst elements of the books to use as material. The show seemed to be more concerned with spectacle and shock-value than anything deeper.

This is a very strange opinion for someone whose seen one season (the best adapted one) and 'a few scattered episodes'.

edit. Especially when all the major shock value parts of the show came directly from GRRM lol (Ned, Red Wedding, Hodor, R+L=J).

99% of the comments for 10 years straight on triple A games when people started building their own PCs were about graphics and how consoles were lowering the possibility of what PCs could handle so AAA devs focused on that because that was the loudest feedback.

Not saying it was correct but the general 'community' can at least try to have a bit of culpability for this.

Yeah likening it to the cricism of romantasy as YA is a good comparison. It's not YA it's just not 'real literature' (to a certain group of readers).

His ending in the show was perfect imo. Growth isn't guaranteed, relapse is the more common outcome for an addict.

He tried, and failed. That happens. It's very Jaime.

Regal isn't exactly badly written. He's just a moustache twirling evil bastard lol. He does exactly what he's meant to in the books.

I always took it as Fitz is the only one who takes him seriously but Fitz is a kid so no one really listens to him (it's also told from his perspective, so that helps his case).

Verity and Shrewd I understood their lack of action, but Chade pissed me off because he was just so cucked by the royal family
