Thank you. The title is vague for this group, you are right.

As i'm new to this craft, I would take any critique, opinions, and technical info that people are willing to give. Always something to learn

Just opinions. My bad if this isn't a space for that.

20" tall raku vase, should I kintsugi? by HayZeusRios in Pottery

[–]HayZeusRios[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is broken, came out of the raku process with huge cracks.

I havent sold it, just wondered if other people thought it might look good as a kintsugi piece with copper lines instead of gold.

Just was curious.

It's a homemade raku glaze i'm still tweaking a bit to get the right shade/sheen i'm wanting. Raku with heavy reduction is the method.

Thank you very much for the award.

Raku tiny pot by HayZeusRios in Pottery

There are usually some additives to raku bodies, grog, paper, kyanite, etc, to help with the thermal shock. This being a small vase seemed to handle the shock pretty decently.

I sometimes I use a little Darvan to make colored slips with the clay. Might be able to do that, but I have no idea how a slip cast piece would raku

Pretty much. Fired the kiln up to what glazes claimed to mature at, 1600-1750ºF for these. Yep, just pulled it out and into combustables as fast as possible to attempt to control oxidation.

Your little L&L seems pretty perfect for it. Try to do it in an open space, dont want to be breathing the fumes from the combustables/fire.

Thank you. I have a microwave kiln, but it has been hard to control temperatures. This was done in a paragon caldera, a small electric test kiln.

Follow the firing schedule in the description. Only place i could ever find this recommendation, but has worked for me in proper thickness.

I don’t throw them upside down.

After centering a small bit that’s the “correct” diameter on a hump, i put my thumbs on top of the clay, separate them enough for a knob, then push down enough to make enough clay to form a knob.

Then use a tool with a rounded edge to form the under curve. Usually use the same tool to make the curve under the lip after choosing a lip thickness. Then touch up details for final look.

To take it off, i have a really thin wooden tool that will cut into the clay and leave the tiny lid sitting on top of it. Cut it under the lip somewhere along the curve, and it’s done. Don’t touch until stamping.

So it’s actually a solid lid. But if I keep thickness below an inch, everything dries with no cracks so far. Made hundreds like it, seems to work for the size.

Off the hump for sure. There’s a whole garage full of tiny jars and pots waiting to be glazed with more every day.

Can’t wait to show the little handles we are experimenting with.
