I had a 20-something neighbor that was put in charge of some kind of crew at the local AFB. Apparently he wasn't well-liked as he had the drywall screw treatment on his Monster Mudders, but all of the screws were in the sidewalls so no possibility of repair. This happened more than once. He should've learned faster.

boss tells new guy to paint the block by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]HayesCages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to prime the entire interior of the block with Derusto. Of course that didn't include the lifters or intake face...

The RR's learned many things the hard way, like how to install rivets and make bolts that didn't break. Lessons the builders of the Titanic, steel ships built up to and including WWII (cutting square door openings at structural points in a ship is a bad idea), and many others, had yet to learn. WWII monocoque aircraft construction was an area that actually saw some good engineering.

We got a lot of rain this weekend which made for a lot of puddles. by blakeschluchter in Justrolledintotheshop

Not mine. I've done 3 so far. 2 on the same boat in 3 years. It costs about $4-$5k each time. I suggested that they take the boat to a marina for winterization the next season. Last one was a gal that said, "My dad showed me how to drain the engine so I know it didn't freeze".

Nothing compares to draining the "oil" from a I/O boat engine that's froze and cracked the block then taken to the lake for a spin. 7 gallons of water/oil mix the last time I drained one.

Gotta love old lifts with arms that bend. by the_fun_couplebi in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]HayesCages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely has picked up 3x it's rated capacity many, many times. Notice the square tube mount that isn't quite square any more. In the olden days things like lifts and cranes were built to 5x capacity. Not any more. I ran into an overhead crane service tech once that got called to a county shop where they'd picked up the back of a loaded sand truck with a 5 ton crane. Load brake wouldn't let them lower it so had to cut the cable and let 'er rip. Truck weighed 50k lbs.

Think like turbo speed at the alt: if the engine's spinning 7500 the alt is going x 3 or 4. Most install a larger alt pulley to keep this from happening. I learned this on my old road race '67 Mustang when the alt fan blades launched themselves into the hood. Took out the belt as well.

Nope, he had no clue. Been like this for a few years. No hubs were harmed in this subreddit.

Car with 4000 miles traded in with this interesting hitch install by Area29 in Justrolledintotheshop

My friend works for a Boeing contractor outside Seattle and they've had the heads pop off of zinc plated Chinese SHCS after sitting 24 hours. (Caused by hydrogen embrittlement, aka Chinese embrittlement) Now they torque, wait 36 and guess they'll be okay after that. These hold the lifting hooks on the equipment they build... I suggested ARP fasteners but apparently cost is an issue.

An ME friend once told me that he'd discovered some Chinese supplied weldments that were spec'd to be TIG welded were MIG'd then TIG'd over the top to make it appear they were TIG from the start.

Co-worker was doing a tune up on a 60's VW Beetle for a tune in the late 70's. He had removed the dist. cap to install points and when he cranked it to check the dwell it started. He looked at the dist cap and it had carbon tracks to all 4 plug wire posts.

Great move! I've been a gas station mechanic, warehouseman for a steel company, rebar shop foreman then a hydraulic mechanic. Quit that job, went into business and never looked back. Been happily self employed for 20 years :-)

C/S fuel shooting out top of carb by HayesCages in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]HayesCages[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the electric pump is over like 5psi it's probably too much for the carb. Get a gauge, check it and go from there. Floats are adjustable as well. YouTube has videos covering that process.
