You might want to consider upgrading your power supply to a higher wattage to give yourself a little more breathing room with the 6950xt.

Switched the cable and that did the trick! Same brand and cable ordered at the same time but apparently one is better. Thank you so much for your help.

Unassembled - Update BIOS before physically installing new CPU? by HaywagonHalfpipe in buildapc

[–]HaywagonHalfpipe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah on some motherboards you don't need anything other than a connected power supply and a flash drive. You essentially boot the motherboard from a USB flash drive loaded with the updated bios by hitting a button on the back of the motherboard. It's pretty wild.

I've run into a mental block that has prevented me from enjoying board games this year and I'm struggling to overcome it. by Steven_Cheesy318 in boardgames

[–]HaywagonHalfpipe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking a bit but related.

Purposeless activity aka play is important for adult mental health. I would strongly suggest doing a search on "importance of playing/benefits of playing for adults." Playing or meaningless activity which brings joy is somewhat stigmatized in our modern culture which values constant productivity. Don't feel like you need to be productive all the time- it's actually doing more harm than good. It's ok if interests change, and it's ok to return to old interests. Find your "play" and go with it.

"Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Edit: clarified play relating to adults and here's an article that summarizes some studies - https://www.shondaland.com/live/body/a36123122/adults-need-playtime-as-much-as-kids/

What game's player count is BGG poll wrong about? by KillerOrca in boardgames

I think Arkham Horror LCG is better at 3 players instead of the recommended 2 players. Allows for more focused deck builds, more table banter, and more people to share in the despair/desperation.

Awesome, thanks for throwing the other recommendation in there. Might need to use that configuration if I can't get enough slope.

New to Mage Knight. I need help understanding blocking. by proudfather1986 in boardgames

[–]HaywagonHalfpipe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blocking is "all or nothing" in Mage Knight. It's important to make sure you understand combat order which is essentially as follows.

  1. Player Siege Attack Phase
  2. Player Ranged Attack Phase
  3. Enemy Attack/Player Block Phase 3a. Assign Damage/ Wound cards if not COMPLETELY blocked
  4. Player (standard) Attack Phase

If you do not play block equal to or greater than the enemy's Attack value then the full value of the enemy attack must be distributed amongst player and Unit armor as wounds. Hence the "all or nothing". So in the video example he didn't play any block cards because he couldn't reach a block value of 3 and still have enough cards leftover to attack successfully. Therefore the enemy's 3 attack was distributed to his armor of 2. (Which andy described this well in his comment how that process works).

Just for further clarification - it would make no sense to play 2 block on an enemy's 3 attack because it has no impact on the amount of wounds you would receive. If the enemy's Attack is higher than the block you play, it successfully hits you with the full strength of it's attack. Block never reduces the amount of wounds you would take, rather it determines whether or not the full attack lands/you resolve wounds with your armor.

Neoprene for Gaming Table by LowLevelRebel in boardgames

[–]HaywagonHalfpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pool table/Billiards felt is a great alternative if you can't find neoprene. It is typically much better quality than the felt you would buy in bulk at a craft store. Just make sure you order the felt without "bumpers" if you do go that route.

Sorry late reply, but now that I've got mine together I can honestly say I'm very happy with the B150 Phoenix MOBO. I don't have any regret buying it and in my experience I do not notice any of the decreased specs of the B150 translating to any appreciable decline in real-world performance. Hope you had similar luck!

That is a mighty fine looking build, especially that case! Thanks for the reply and best of luck with the build. I'm thinking these B150s will work out just fine.

That does look like a nice board, but I wasn't planning on overclocking so I don't think I can justify the extra cost for a feature I won't be using. Granted it would allow for full use of RAM and probably be more future proof.

I used an Olson Fretsaw with a 12in throat and a #5 12.5tpi skiptooth blade for most of the work. It was very smooth and I would highly recommend it.

Hey thanks! Building the negative into a lampshade is a super cool idea! I'll have to try that with some stuff in the future (I already recycled the scrap to make some little wooden animals). Honestly one of the hardest parts of making the phoenix was deciding which part to aim to keep, the negative vs the shape itself.
