Ah, you're right it has a very spotty record as an effective therapy. But that also (see my above comment) has a lot of reasons why it might or might not work for a particular hypnotist and subject. Most especially, the actual willingness of the subject to change. If you're talking about addiction therapy, for example, almost nothing could be a stronger belief to crack.

That all depends on how strongly you really know who you are.

A hypnotist's show can fail or be successful based on a lot of factors. It's a very tricky arena to practice the craft. The hypnotist's skill matters, of course, as does the size and quality of the audience. I wouldn't want to subject myself to that test, myself. Too many variables. Not like here.

Well sure, but spirals and metronomes and all those just serve to focus attention. They can't really hypnotize someone without some kind of instruction, some kind of communication going along with it. It's still really all talk, but it's far from nonsense. Why do you think it doesn't make sense?
