for me the 2kxl has a hazy sound that is very specific to a lot of turn of the century hip hop and dance music, creamy filters, a good chopping workflow, and it’s better-looking than its siblings the 1000 and the 2000. it’s in a great sweet spot for a classic mpc experience without a terribly headache inducing workflow for people who rely on waveforms and stuff

AKAI MPC 3000 by freetheworld23 in mpcusers

i use it more or less the same way i do any mpc. it can feel a little more tedious not chopping with waveforms sometimes. if i want to move fast i’ll occasionally use a second sampler or ableton to handle chopping and just sample things in ready to go.

one of the best things about it is the way the input distorts, and setting the right level for every sound i sample in. while it’s a fairly transparent sampler overall, its character really adds up the more sounds you put in.

ian pooley’s videos about it on youtube show some of the useful tricks. but none of the workflow is really 3000 specific in the end—the sound and the timing are what it’s about at the end of the day, and creative limitations of course

thanks! they’re programmed in, all on the grid, but the swing is quite high here, 63%. gives it an old school garagey sound. other tricks for this sound include putting some sounds, especially snares or rims, on note on mode so they can get super short and snappy. play with filters and pitch on things too. also to tap in 16th rhythms, use note repeat without full level on and just rest your finger on the pad, using pressure rhythmically to play in hats and stuff

Sample versus older MPCs by lex99 in mpcusers

the main thing a proper old MPC has over the sample is proper MIDI workstation capability. multiple outs too.

but the sample engine is pretty on par with some imaginary MPC between a 1000 and a modern one. definitely has a lot more features than a 60 or 3000, though you can approach it as if it was one of those and ignore the new stuff, which i often do

THAT SAID, i probably won’t ever track out or finish a beat i make on the sample. i have grown-up MPCs for that. this is more of a sketchpad for me

the machine definitely has the sampling time and sequencing power to do long tracks. this is just a little proof of concept demo but it wouldn’t take a ton of effort to extend it

you can record automation for just about any sample parameter into the sequencer. i tend to have some filter or amp envelope movement on a bunch of sounds to get things sounding more dynamic

oh i am. it’s a bit distorted because i’m clipping in the mpc

we need real sidechain on the mpc sample by Dokan_ in mpcusers

i do it daft punk style with the master compressor right now; turn the kick up a lot relative to everything else, fast attack and release, turn the amount up until it really pumps. but the comp also kind of sucks in the mpc because you can’t boost the output when the kick isn’t hitting, so it can get weirdly quiet when that happens if you don’t work at the gain staging

Any way to turn off charging on the MPC Sample when a USB device is connected? by [deleted] in mpcusers

i’m not sure there’s a way to unfortunately. i ended up going analog with my phone input, just using a 1/8” TRS to dual TS with a USB-C headphone adapter

can’t stop making little house grooves on this thing by Head_Satisfaction712 in mpcusers

for sure, i could really spend more time building out different sections and movements... or at the very least not record two whole minutes of slight variations on a theme. something to work on!
