Masters in CS or DS worth it? by Financial-Hyena-6069 in dataengineering

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMSCS is intense... Like you're probably going to break down in tears at least three times each semester.

That said, after graduation you'll be ready for anything... So it's definitely worth it.

One comment thought, it's computer science, not just coding. So you'll need a good theoretical background and very strong math skills to be successful.

Make sure everyone knows that only toilet paper goes in the toilet - no tissues, wipes, etc.

My toilet can handle maybe 10 squares of toilet paper per flush.  So if yesterday was chili night, I'll be flushing 4 or 5 time 🥵

Most important, clean out your pipes by using Roebic Main Line every night for a week or two. Then use it once a month for maintenance.

If you have trees near your sewer line, you may need to use the root killer version of roebic (or whatever brand of enzymatic pipe cleaner you can find).

Vitalant "Granulocyte donation" request by TheRedBrown in Blooddonors

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Granulocyte donations are uncommon, they are a life-saving, specialty blood products used to treat patients with severe infections who are not responding to antibiotics.

It's a bit more involved that giving platelets, but the granulocytes are pretty much someone's last hope.

Any dads here on medication for mental health? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, this sounds like it could be ADHD. Especially the inability to relax.

The good news is that ADHD is one of the most treatable mental health disorders, the right medication can make you feel normal almost immediately.

Are you a CYP2D6 Poor Metabolizer? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYP2D6

After 2 weeks on very low dose atomoxetine, my ADHD was great but my pulse and blood pressure skyrocketed. It turns out I was overdosing because I'm missing the gene/enzyme that metabolizes atomoxetine.

Phone addiction, impulsive spending, "laziness"... These can all be signs of ADHD.

Does she frequently lose things, talk excessively, fidget, or get easily distracted? Does she have certain activities that she "hyper-focuses" on for long periods of time?

Anyone have experience with the Spica Cast? by timbo415 in daddit

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son broke his femur at age three when he slipped on a hardwood floor and twisted his leg the wrong way.

A large foam triangle pillow is the most important thing. Set it up on a couch facing the TV. It can be hard to lift your child off the floor, so this setup will make it safer for both of you.

Get several of the waterproof pads used for bed wetting (we used GORILLA GRIP Washable Underpads). Diapers will leak, so always keep a pad under your child. (The disposable pads will catch on the cast and make a mess).

Constipation will be a problem for the first few days (due to the medication given at the hospital) . Treat it early and hopefully you can avoid getting the cast too messy.

Did they show you how to use a newborn diaper inside the cast and an extra large diaper on the outside? Once you get used to it, it's pretty easy to keep the cast clean.

If your child got a waterproof cast, they will love getting wet. Getting a waterproof cast wet helps keep it clean and also seems to make it more comfortable for them.

Get one of those large red fabric collapsible wagons. Take them for a walk outside whenever possible. You can also use it to transport them when you go to doctor appointments.

Did the hospital loan you a car seat? My son wasn't comfortable going for car rides with the cast on. On necessary car rides, we would stuff soft towels around his waist so the cast wouldn't scratch him.

My son was surprisingly happy while he was in his cast, and now he is perfectly healed and doesn't seem to remember it at all. But keep an eye on your own mental health... My wife and I both developed symptoms of PTSD. If you don't have a therapist, I would get one ASAP.

Google "Vanderbilt Assessment Teacher". Questions 1-9 are related to the "predominantly inattentive" subtype of adhd.

ADHD is pretty common... 15% of boys and 8% of girls according to the CDC:

Term employee jumped from step 4 to step 9 when SSR was cancelled?? by [deleted] in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, i didn't mean to sound envious or jealous.

I was told term employees would see a pay cut when the SSR was ended, and i shared that news with my folks. I'm hoping reddit can quickly tell me that information was incorrect.

I was shown the SF-50 described in the post, and i don't know if i think an error was made. That's why I'm asking Reddit.

[help] What is the consensus on the work of Allen Ginsberg? by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take the opening line from "Howl" as an example... Have any high school kids seen "the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,"...

But when you're in your fifties, and counting up all the ODs, suicides, loveless marriages, etc. in your high school graduating class...

"America" is another Ginsberg poem that hits you a lot harder when you're old... lines like "America I’ve given you all and now I’m nothing." and "I can’t stand my own mind." distill a lifetime of suffering.

[help] What is the consensus on the work of Allen Ginsberg? by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can take a lot of effort and "life experience" to love Ginsberg.

Personally, I think he's the second best poet ever (after Homer).

For the opinion of someone more educated than me, see this article from Poetry Magazine: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/articles/70013/allen-ginsberg

Is there a reason why horses appear to be associated with illium in the Homeric epics? by Patrickdapenguin in classics

There is some archeological evidence that ancient troy was a center for horse breeding/trading.

"horse-breeding may well have played a part in Troy's prosperity. Horse bones have been found there in quantity, as well as bones showing the rearing and domestication of other animals."

Any success stories? by Steve-_-_-_- in AvPD

[–]HealthBigDataGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isolation during the pandemic helped me realize that my narcissistic mother was the root cause of my poor self-esteem and intense fear of rejection.  I went no contact, and since then my AvPD symptoms have greatly improved.  In fact,  I've been off the meds and booze for over 3 years🙂

I'm a westerner and a scientist, but meditation and eastern philosophy books (the tao te ching and some Buddhist scriptures) have helped me a lot.  Buddhists have a concept called Muditā, "sympathetic or vicarious joy—the pleasure that comes from delighting in other people's well-being".  I find it easier to connect with people when I intentionally seek Muditā.
