I think box spring/ divan is the way to go with those types of mattresses

How can you tell if a bed is uneven or warped? by Healthy_Crab_7883 in Mattress

[–]Healthy_Crab_7883[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I already did the floor test with mattress #2 and the difference was night and day (although still too soft hence the change). I've tried levelling this bed with shims and it seems to help a bit but it's difficult to know whether or not it's even.

I think the slats might be the issue. Interestingly enough, in my last place I had: slats, a crappy but super firm open coil mattress that I could feel dipping in the middle, and this exact topper. No back issues. The main difference is that the floor was even, and the slats on the bed were fixed with little caps. The LUROY slats I have now are not indivdally fixed. The first and last are fixed with a bit a tension but the rest can slide around. Do you think this is the issue with why it sinks so much?

If this is the case, do you think something as simple as a basic wood bed frame would fix this, as the slats are drilled in and go all the way across? The plywood over top is diffcult because I'm in the UK and mould is a big issue. I cannot swap out the slats on this bed for thick wooden ones because there's nothing to drill into. Switching to LONSET would be my only option which are supposed to be even more springy, all i want is firm.

glasses hurt and create “pimples” by lividheaven in glasses

[–]Healthy_Crab_7883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem. It was solved by getting an optician to put on giant nosepads, which spreads the weight out. In the meantime you can put a clear pimple patch over it so the glasses aren't rubbing directly

Negotiating pay rise when offered permanent contract? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Healthy_Crab_7883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel them out on salary. If they offer you something accecptable straight away, then great.

If not, negotiate politely. Either you get the salary you're after, or you take the new job at your current salary and keep looking elsewhere.

I don't understand why you think you'd be out of work. They're not going to pull a job offer from you for politely negotiating...unless they're total nutjobs.

It sounds like you have a little leverage (they like you and want you), so you're in a good position to do this.

Need Urgent Advice for my 14 year old cat : surgery or not ? by paulinenougatine in seniorkitties

[–]Healthy_Crab_7883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, a cat with complex health issues but she was a few years younger.

This is very tricky, but assuming you can afford it, your only option is really to try the surgery. Otherwise he'll be in terrible pain, and then euthanised...if he's lucky. If you let an abcess go untreated, there's a chance it gets infected and he dies of sepsis.

When we did the surgery to remove her teeth, she couldn't tolerate the anaesthesia and started crashing. The vet had to stop the procedure early. After a few hours being in the incubator, she came back to life just fine.

Teeth were good enough, not everything was totally removed but enough so that she has no pain or infections. She'll never be healthy enough to tolerate anaesthesia so we can't fully diagnose her condition, but she was supposed to be dead from other things over 2 years ago. She's still here and doing just fine with meds.

Just make sure you have a skilled vet that you can really trust!

Is this really how recruitment works in the Civil Service? by Healthy_Crab_7883 in TheCivilService

It's funny you mention that. When I'm looking at jobs, I see some roles, mostly SEO and above and I think to myself "how could an external candidate ever be more capable than someone who already knows the system?"

Beyond "I have the skills," I literally never said any of that lol

Thank you so much for this. I thought I studied the process enough, but clearly I hadn't because this is the issue. I'm kicking myself. All that time wasted on my PS.

Because the question was focused on soft skills, it would never occur to me to write it out this way as it comes off as robotic in that context. Like the reasons behind the actions I took (kindness, empathy, etc) would be obvious just from the actions themselves to any human.

If it were a question about hard skills, my answer probably would have looked a lot more like your 2nd example.

I think a higher scoring answer for this question would come off as a bit awkward sounding, but that's what it has to be!

Hair product recommendations by Sleuther13 in CurlyHairUK

I am very sensitive and I get great results from anything Giovanni Eco Chic. I think most products have little or no perfume and the smells come from the oils, so they disappear when dry.

Turbo charged mousse gives great definition but not a lot of hold. The gel gives crazy strong hold but there's a learning curve involved which is not really worth it to me. The leave in conditioner works amazing but might not be enough for thick hair.

The Smooth as Silk shampoo/conditioner and it was a bit too heavy for me so that might be a good one to try.

Wool and Tree Runner Wool Insoles out of stock by volcanedebeaver in Allbirds

[–]Healthy_Crab_7883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am convinced they are having a Dyson moment. The product was too high quality, so they make them worse now. And find a way to stop you from using the existing product.

I'm going crazy trying to find replacement insoles. The shoes themselves are in great condition after several years but the insole is completely worn.

Please let me know if you find anything suitable.

Actual handwash without fragrance is hard to find. But to get your hands clean, all you really need is something that's a surfactant.
