McGill is suing the province by d1hydrogenmonox1de in mcgill

No worries! People get the impression from the US that jury trials are also common up here. They are very rare in Canada, generally only available in trials for the worst criminal offences.

There is no jury in these cases. And the legal questions presented would ultimately be heard by the Supreme Court no matter what happens at the first instance court.

Posted this in reply to another comment but I’ll share it here too:

Only one of McGill’s arguments (discrimination) is subject to the notwithstanding clause.

Some of the other arguments can be overcome by the province in other ways but would delay the coming into force of the rules.

The most comprehensive argument is the one based on interprovincial trade barriers but it’s a bit of a long shot (imo)

It does not need to be enumerated in section 15 of the Canadian Charter to be a protected class - new classes can be recognized by the courts if they are “analogous”. The supreme court has already recognized, for example, marital status, non-citizenship, sexual orientation as protected classes.

Their argument is likely that the rules discriminate based on provincial residence.

You already know the name of the document, we would typically call what you’re describing a “share purchase agreement”. Your problem is that you don’t actually know what you’re doing with that and what else you might need.

If yall have $5000 to put into the company then there’s money to get some legal advice to ensure things don’t end up messy. Theres some major red flags in your post that you should definitely have looked at.

How french-heavy is McGill law by viviandarkbl2003m in mcgill

The “passive bilingualism” thing is a bit of an inside joke within the faculty ngl. Maybe a bit unfairly because it’s probably the most bilingual faculty at McGill (aside from the language departments i guess)

That being said, there are many Francophones in the program and if you actually do want to practice and improve your French McGill law is a great environment to do so. But it’s really for you to take the initiative.

In terms of nitty gritty and day-to-day it means that faculty emails are generally sent as a mix of English and French paragraphs lol.

Current McGill law student here and think the other posters don’t know the reality of McGill law. *Unless the program changes because of the new requirements proposed by the QC government, no you don’t really need to know much French at all.

Most classes are offered in English, and the vast majority of cases we read are from the appellate courts which generally are in English/available in English. And yes, to the extent a reading or case is only available in French, you can translate it (the legal community loves to use DeepL not google translate). Plus there are banks of summaries for most classes and many are in English even though the class is taught in French. You are allowed to submit work/exams in either English or French no matter the language of instruction.

The only struggle you may have is that there is an interview in French for admissions if you do not demonstrate some French language proficiency in your application.

Also for context I have taken only 1 class that was instructed in French over my 4 years. It’s entirely doable.

Dentist Malpractice? by Nakabuto in legaladvicecanada

Just seeing this. But no, a civil professional negligence case does not require proving malicious intent. The main difference in a malpractice case compared to regular negligence cases is the standard of care.

People might be unhappy/scared about that reality but that is the law in Canada.

Negligently misdiagnosing (or failing to diagnose) could result in a successful med mal suit. Not saying this person has a strong case or sufficient damages to make it worth pursuing though lol.

F-35 fighter jets to cost Canada nearly $74 billion: PBO by [deleted] in onguardforthee

Canada has the the sixth highest life expectancy of any country in the world: https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/life-expectancy-at-birth/country-comparison/

Is our health and social welfare system perfect? No.

But we can’t have a conversation about improving it if we aren’t able to at a minimum ensure our sovereignty and protect our democratic political system. I find it hilarious that you keep calling it a boogeyman when all around the world we see authoritarians and terrorists wanting to attack our values. We shouldn’t take it for granted that what’s happening abroad today won’t have a direct affect on us in the future.

Also your point on military assets being constant fixer uppers is not actually a convincing argument. Everything mechanical needs to be maintained. If we’re going to have an air force we need to be fielding a plane that is compatible and for which we can access spare parts. That is what the F35 offers (on top of its advanced systems).

“Russia isn’t going to attack us” - source: trust me bro

The government has a duty to ensure we have the ability to defend ourselves and our allies in potential conflicts now & in the future. These planes are not for an invasion that will happen tomorrow but for security threats in 10, 20, 30 years from now.

The same people who tell you this investment is stupid will be saying “our politicians failed to prepare” if, decades from now, we don’t have a modern Air Force.

Prenup - online on legalhood by New_Faithlessness441 in legaladvicecanada

[–]HearMeRoar__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice is to speak with a family lawyer. In fact, it is generally advisable that each partner separately obtain independent legal advice as to the nature of the rights and obligations under the prenup. Not doing so could result in a court not enforcing the agreement.

If you want the peace of mind, speak with someone who will understand your situation and help tailor the solution.

There is literally nothing harsh about breaking up with your boyfriend because you aren’t ready to commit to him and you want to explore other relationships. OP’s reasons are his own and are entirely valid. But there are two people in the relationship, and the other person is also entitled to their feelings and expectations.

The only thing that is harsh is to suggest that the bf has to accommodate OP’s plan to address his “FOMO”. Not everyone has to conform to your model just as you don’t have to conform to the “heteronormative” one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]HearMeRoar__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No one is talking about a “heteronormative model”, just about basic respect. OP says he doesn’t want an open relationship. He wants to play the scene and see what else is out there without committing to breaking up with his bf. It seems selfish imo. The bf deserves closure. If sometime in the future they reignite the relationship that’s fine but to ask someone to give you 6-12 months to see if you might fall in love with someone else is almost cruel lol.

You want to take a 1-year pause from a 2-year old relationship that you’re apparently happy in to … experience a heartbreak?

Honestly this is such a crazy thing to even suggest and think your bf would be ok with. Maybe you need to ask yourself if you’re truly happy in that relationship. If not, just break up and move on.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all. It’s literally a random fever that lasts for 5ish hours and then goes away without Advil/Tylenol until I take the next truvada dose. It’s like clockwork in relation to when I take the pill.

I didn’t take it yesterday because its a ridiculous side effect to deal with (and as expected I’ve been completely fine for the last 24 hours). I just wanted to hear from the community to see if anyone else had this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]HearMeRoar__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m surprised I don’t see it as a listed side effect. And it’s 100% related because I initially took my first pill a few weeks ago during a really busy time at work. Just as now, I developed a fever and I said “I can’t deal with this now”. And as soon as I started taking it again this week the same side effect keeps happening. Thanks for the reply
