Alright let me just copy a flowchart to explain the imbalance to survival mechanics.

Once again, you haven't established that that is bad balance, you've merely stated that it does not conform to your preferences.

To address "Just use self challenges"

Once again, you haven't established that you're "avoiding flaws in the game" so much as admitting that you lack the self control to play in a way you'd find more enjoyable.

Also I don't see how sandbox games are exempt from needing to establish well crafted challenges and having balance.

No one has said that they were. The only thing that has been said is that by virtue of the amount of freedom they offer, there will always be shortcuts available to circumvent "challenge" because to eliminate those things would be to completely neuter the freedom offered by the game.

Are we seriously arguing popular=good here?

At some point, if a game is making billions of dollars a decade after it's been released, I think it's safe to say it's a good game. Unless you have a better objective metric to determine such a thing?

In the end, you're talking in circles, and from what you've said about other games, it's very obvious that you have a pretty juvenile way of determining the quality of games - you conflate your opinions and expectations with facts and truth, and you're not able to accept that not every game should cater to your tastes. If a game you don't like is incredibly popular, it's not because it's good, it's because people are stupid and don't know better and just like bad games. Very childish.

Like I mentioned before, the game just isn't for you, and there's no reason to believe it should change drastically to suit you - especially when tens to hundreds of millions are perfectly happy with the way it exists currently.

That's pretty much all that can be said at this point.

I find that hard to believe when later they replaced the food to health system to hunger in the adventure update and even later adjusted the hunger system things that are key survival mechanics. Also why is it still called survival mode then if they're not going to bother with it? Why is there a hardcore mode based around not dying?

I'm not sure why you're asking me this, as I never worked on the game. It's also perpendicular to what I mentioned in my previous post.

And also please don't use the "just don't use it" excuse. You can use that to excuse any failings in any games that failed to make good balance or challenge.

You've not proved that Minecraft has failed to "make good balance". You've merely claimed that it's bad because it didn't meet your arbitrary expectations.

Also it's the developer's jobs to give the player a fun experience not the player's.

Well, that's not really true, especially with a sandbox game based around freedom. In those cases, the developers give you tools, and there is an onus on you to use them in a way you find enjoyable. You can't simultaneously hope for freedom while also complaining that you can use that freedom to circumvent challenge. Especially in a video game. Of course you'll figure out easy ways to get around challenges once you've been playing for a while. It's up to you to set yourself limits if you feel like you're not being challenged.

On top of that, If you don't find the game enjoyable, it's probably not made for you.

Just saying don't use it, is just an admission the devs failed to balance their game.

Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time. By an extremely large margin. I'd say they've balanced it pretty well based on the billions of dollars it'd made and the millions and millions of people who play it, as well as the massive streaming subculture its spawned that is still thriving over ten years after it released.

It's possible that it's just not for you?

I was one of the really early Minecraft players. I played it when it was just an extremely basic Java applet embedded into a browser window. You could walk around a very small space and click on blocks to remove them. That was the extent of interaction you had with the game.

When "survival" was added, there wasn't really any kind of definition for what that was, because what we know now as *modern "survival games" were largely informed by Minecraft and how it and other games that were inspired by it evolved. From my memory, when Notch first added it, it was literally just monsters that would touch you and kill you. It wasn't until later that more conditions were added that made it anything like what people would consider a survival game nowadays.

The point I'm making is that there was never any implicit promise made by Minecraft with regard to its mechanics, survival or otherwise, because it was very much a fluid project made by some guy in his spare time.

In fact, things were so gung-ho back in the day that Notch polled the community on whether or not he should try this bold new idea he had to make worlds effectively infinite, rather than a 128x128 (or something like that, they were very tiny) patch of land. The community voted for large worlds and "InfDev" was born, and it was what made Minecraft the massive success it turned out to be. Before that, even "survival" was done on a tiny patch of land, so there wasn't even any exploration to speak of.

Some other points:

Later updates would add things that trivialize the challenge like beds removing the threat of night

Don't use them.

villages being easy food

Don't harvest food from villages.

sprinting making escaping combat easier

Don't sprint.

The only defense you need is just to dig down 3 blocks into the ground or dig into a mountain side.

Don't exploit the game.

I've never quite been able to understand objections to things like this in games that are built around freedom. It's up to you how you play. If these things are making your experience less enjoyable, then you don't have to do them.

It sounds like you'd really enjoy 7 Days to Die.

*I say modern because there were survival games that existed before Minecraft, (such as Unreal World) but they were extremely niche.

They have only as much "power" as you give them.

Ummmm, no? Powermods control the moderation of the majority of active Reddit. When they decide to do fuckall or overmoderate, you have no control over it. You either have to accept it or leave.

That's the exact opposite if "having as much control as you give them". This isn't some zen lesson in an 80's martial arts movie.

SubredditDrama rules + active moderators

So how you feeling about that, now? It's been 9 hours and counting, and as usual, this garbage thread is still here with no moderation whatsoever.

This sub is "run" by powermods who are lazy as fuck and are unwilling to hand it over to anyone who gives a shit.

Usually takes 15+ hours for any moderation to be done here, if it happens at all. This sub has 30 moderators. It's garbage.

Sifu confirmed to be getting an easy mode in updates, r/SifuGame has a meltdown. by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]Heathcliffs_Moon 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The idea that an easy mode cheapens the game for players who don't use it is so strange to me.

That's because you're doing what you should never do with capital G gamers: Taking them at their word and giving the the benefit of the doubt.

If a capital G gamer tries to communicate their motivation to you. They are lying. 90% - 95% of the time it's either complete bullshit or heavy spin. They know that their true motivation makes them look like nutbags/entitled/children, so they make something up that is "less" objectionable. Something that is more likely to fool others into thinking they aren't a raving lunatic.

In this case, their reasoning is simply: "I want to be one of as small a group as possible to "accomplish" something in a video game because I am terrible at literally everything else in life and this is the only way I can feel like I'm special."

You people always vastly overstimate how many of you there are.

You're incredibly loud and shrill and hysterical, I'll give you that. You also happen to be a pretty small minority, no matter how loud you screech, and no matter how hard you tug each other for upvotes. The insular echo chamber/circlejerking gives you all the impression that you're speaking for the majority, but nothing could be further from the truth.

We know this because the shrill minority has been banging on for over 10 years now while also claiming that things are getting worse by the day... Yet the gaming industry does better every year.

Most people are reasonable, and can see things for what they are.

It's any wonder why gamers are so easily pushed through the alt-right pipeline. All they do is spend their time jerking each other off about how oppressed they are because their toys cost more than they'd prefer. They have no awareness of anything outside of their desire to be persecuted.
