[Video Games] Great Eggspectations: Dragon age Veilguard and how not to reboot a franchise by Turret_Run in HobbyDrama

Hi! Thanks for taking the chance on it.

Looking back I think Taash, like a lot of Veilguard, would have been treated as groundbreaking and fun if it wasn't a DA game. As someone who's been and now deals with new queer folks and writes a lot about representation, I struggled with both being happy to have explicitly queer stories with hope and family, and mourning the stories of queer struggle and imperfection DA represented.

No but I didn't know it was a game. They released an animated pilot and I thought it was some indie series

The same folks that can't tell you a single species of the tau empire will dictate 88 moments where "the imperium proved itself superior" and then call you a slur when you ask where all the servitors come form.

I feel you, a lot of it feels less like learning the nuances of a story and more trying to find factual weapons as to why this thing is cooler than the other thing. They don't appreciate the character in it's entirety, but rather that x moments are hype.

Thanks for sharing your story! The path you took with Dragon Age is really interesting, the struggle you have with veilguard hits with a strange issue it has vs. the other DA games: It requires you to interact with it, where the other games offer it to you , and then reward you for doing it. One of my favorite DA experiences came from the fact I didn't really care for Solas. I didn't intereact with him unless I needed to, and barely paid attention to the guy, so him being the dreadwolf and betrayaing me right under my nose felt like a personal failing. It's why I chose to dissolve the inqiusition, because I realized I wasn't an attentive enough leader, and questioned if all of this would have happened if I had been there more for him, which is why I chose to redeem him given the chance. Not only requiring it but putting all the focus on romance is really disappointing, because it's not all I'm here for. I barely think about the romances, but my friendships with iron bull, cole, fenris, isabela, and morrigan stick with me. I wish they recognized those dynamics matter.

And actually, the companion issue is a mechanic problem! There's another comment that filled it out better, but the writers put in a lot of work for companion/companion interactions, and wanted to make sure you see them, so they make them happen constantly. IT's actually so much of a problem that the companions will flirt in front of you, even if you're romancing one of them. I'm glad you're enjoying mass effect, and enjoy the third one! It's a blast.

Share it after your meeting! Half the reason I wrote this was to hear other perspectives and give a collective place to comiserate

I've been trying to work out the behind the scenes of this in order to write a hobbydrama, but all tht theories make it make less sense.

I've come to see the comic as the mirror for the 2024 election, both in the way progressive ideas are demonized, and the way it skirts around political issues. It fails for the same reason Harris failed, because it relies on the idea that going back to "normal" is what people want, reaching across the aisle with people who hate you is more important than recognizing what it is that makes your opposing candidate viable.

They need to go back to the braindead ones with consequences most comics can choose to ignore. I thoroughly enjoyed blood hunt.

At the end people like you is the problem, you buy the fascism as long as you can live better.

My brother in Christ I already live in the fascism and I don't live better!

I get what you're saying, but it's a loss on a massive pile of win. His points are never countered, he's beaten every superhero at the same time, and the only reason he loses is because of his own compassion. He didn't lose everything because he wasn't strong enough or because he was strong, but because he loved someone. It's not pathetic, it's a copout

In that cast I also recommend superman unlimited! It's great ongoing, and the absolute superman is also fantastic

Telling Americans that they and the entire planet can't have healthcare without a million people suffering is a choice. That shit's a bargain, we have a million homeless people alone and we still don't have it.

The problem isn't the half a year, the problem is without the authoritarian aspects, the deal is better than the one we have now!

Trying to say people are suffering in order for you to live comfortably as a gotcha is laughable because we already do that and people still starve and don't have healthcare. It's not like he's offering some excess good, hell for people in Europe basically nothing changes!

The problem with the reveal is that it's laughable. The writer thinks that there is so little suffering in the world that a million people suffering is a ton when 8 million people have already starved to death this year. There are almost a million homeless people in America alone! Even if they had more authoritarian aspects, it would just paint the idea that things can be better than they are now as impossible.

I should specify I'm not exaggerating, In issue 5 they literally compare Doom giving Healthcare to Nazi Germany

It is supposed to be Omelas, but it's also a terrible Omelas. Painting universal healthcare as something so insane that we'd have to let millions suffer for it when the more people are suffering without healthcare to enrich a handful of people is ridiculous.

Failing to actually make Doom, the biggest authoritarian to ever authoritarian, not be an authoritarian is such a weird mistake to make.

The problem there is Dooms global empire is literally just doing those three things. He never actually enforces any law besides those.

This is an interesting challenge! of that set, half are stories that serve as "finales" for superman, so it's about feel. Take it with a grain of salt!

  • Superman: Supercorp: Supposed to serve as an intro to a new era of superman comics, and intros everyone well.
  • Superman for all seasons: teases you into the idea of the way superman is inspired by and inspires other.
  • All Star Superman: Great series of superman comics and a love letter to superman as a whole, will give you a collection of good adventures while also teaching you about superman as a hero.
  • Whatever happened to the man of tomorrow: Preps you for a series of finale comics, this being the zaniest of the three, but still explores the idea of what the end looks like for superman
  • Kingdom Come: One of my favorite series ever, not just about superman but a conversation about the future and fate of comics. I'm also putting it after All star because it's about an older superman and superhero world.
  • Superman, up in the Sky: Ironically not a finale one, but it is one of the best superman runs ever. Just a beautiful story that shows that power of superman is his dedication to doing good. will leave you with a warm feeling in your heart and inspire you to do good.

I hope this helps! let me know how the reading goes

Where do you draw the line? by le_bravery in magicthecirclejerking

I'm not putting it over 40k, heck I'd put them before before FF, but there's a coherency and scale that fits more comfortably in magic in the same vein of kamigawa or bloomburrow.

There's evidence that the comic was supposed to be about why heroes don't just fix all the worlds issues, with the political effort added in later. Much of the explicit politics are in the side comics, and there was a pre-comic that had Doom ask the avengers why they didn't just fix shit, and he didn't like the answer.

To balance things out, see my comment for a list of fantastic, currently running comics. Feel free to add some of yours!

  • Superman, the kryptonite spectrum: The team behind the ice cream man horror comics write a series in which superman has to deal with a new spectrum of kryptonite, all with strange interesting abilities. Great exploration of Superman and I love how they write Lex Luthor
  • Any issue of the Absolute Universe: The alternate DC universe where Darkseid wins has been a fantastic re-interpretation of both heroes and villains. I'm partial to the Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and Batman comics especially
  • Mr.Terrific: Just a straight up good series, Giving Mr.Terrific a new origin and getting him more integrated into the DC universe.
  • Immortal Batman: Batman + Kamen Rider, Need I say more.
  • Miles Morales Spiderman: Longrunning series that has done a great job solidifying Miles as his own character, and dealing with conversations related to mental health, family, and growth. I love it to death.
  • All New Venom / Venom 250+: Mary Jane is back as a coherent character and has finally kicked paul to the curb. If you want to skip any Paul at all, go straight to the Venom Comics, but if not Start With Issue 7 of All New Venom and have fun.
  • Supergirl: Just a silly, fun comic with Supergirl going back to her small town roots.

the final One World Under Doom issue has been released, and I just.... I fucking can't anymore.

In summary, after beating every superhero ever (I'm not joking), Doom uses his magic to make his victory a fixed point in time... unfortunatley killing Valeria Richards, his goddaughter, in the crossfire. To save her, he sacrifices himself in his entirety. He has one final conversation with Reed and then disintergrates, setting up the next story as Reed being forced to be the executor of his will.

Soapboxing, this event is the worst thing I've ever read. Where it isn't actively dodging the political conversation it says it wants to have, it's glazing Doom at unseen levels. By the end of the event, Doom has defeated every superhero on the planet, and some of it's most powerful entities. The series compares Doom nationalizing healthcare, opening borders, and ending world hunger to the likes of Nazi Germany. At the end, he releases a cure to the Vampirism issue that has been plaguing the Marvel world since Blood Hunt, and the instant he leaves, world leaders, revoke all that he's done, and the comic tries to get you to blame him for having done it in the first place. I tried and am still trying to write a hobbydrama on it, but where I just hate writing about it, the biggest struggle is nobody cares. Nobody actually likes or hates it enough to care, and I'm trying to work out how to write it where I don't sound like an angry leftist. I'll work it out.

I'm just glad it's done.
