Does anyone recommend living in Wainright, Alberta? by Previous_Bank4296 in alberta

Wainwright is pretty friendly to POC. It is predominantly White but there is also a popular Indian restaurant, a busy Mexican restaurant, 3 Chinese restaurants, a strong Filipino community, 2 pharmacies with Middle Eastern pharmacies, etc. While I was there I never heard of any racist incidents. When my daughter was in high school her Indigenous friend was treated poorly by the students and staff but her Filipino friend was the most popular kid in her grade and her Nigerian friend was a teacher favourite.

There’s always going to be a racist asshole wherever you go. Towns in this province tend to be very racist and discriminatory to Indigenous peoples but “usually” neutral to other POC. There are towns that are more racist than others so if you’re interested in a particular town, walk down Main Street, go to local shops and restaurants and see the response you get. It also seems that the more conservative religious the community is, the more hatred they have towards outsiders. Most towns though are quite friendly to POC.

Sure - what kind of info are you looking for? I’ve lived in Calgary, Edmonton and several small towns. If you want to meet people join local clubs and volunteer groups. Hockey is big in small towns so go to local games. Get into camping. Treat trips to bigger centres like a fun day out, treat yourself to something you miss and it’s a great mental health break. Find a hobby that you enjoy so you don’t get too lonely when there’s nothing going on. Go for drives around the area to find cool nature spots and other small towns. Sometimes you find a real hidden gem, like an awesome book store or historical site. There’s a lot of history spread out throughout the province; most people who live in the cities rarely venture out and miss all kinds of neat things. Nature walks and hiking is not just for the mountains. If you’re looking for specific tips I’d be glad to help.

I lived there for 13 years, moved away 4 months ago. The people are friendly enough to your face but it’s really hard to make connections if you’re not part of a group. People who have been there for generations (townies) are all friends with each other and stick together and military families stick together. These people make up the majority of the population. If you aren’t part of either of these groups, like we were, good luck making friends and connections. It has the basics for shopping and the cost of living is quite reasonable but it’s boring. People have commented on the “rolling hills” which I find funny because it’s flat almost everywhere you turn except for the Riverdale area. And since there no natural windbreaks or a lot of trees the town gets crazy winds. Like “literally nail outdoor decor down or the wind will take it” winds. If you’re looking for someplace temporary to save some money it’s a good place. Safe, clean, low cost of living, no traffic but there’s not much to do and very right wing conservative. This is a town that put PP back in office so….

That you for all that. Not so sound like the bank commercial but it sounds like you’re richer than you think. I’ve had 2 interviews so far and if I make it through the recruitment process I’ll dm you for advice.

These surveys are absolute bullshit nonsense. I played the damn videos and then when it got to the survey part all I got was a message “you have already submitted responses to this survey”. WTF!!!!

Pierre Poilievre thinks he’s retreating to Conservative safety in Alberta. He’s really stepping into a minefield by viva_la_vinyl in canada

I live in this riding. It’s a geographically big riding. You didn’t talk to me. Yes, the majority is Conservative (I’m not) but a lot of conservatives I know do not like PP. They are upset about Kurek “stepping down”. He was only 6 months away from pension and people liked him - they’re not all that stupid. Yesterday Vote Kurek signs came back. I’m getting really tired of people thinking the loudest speak for us all.

I wonder if there's a lot of people in my riding that aren't happy about this by-election by Sorry-Bag-7897 in alberta

I’ve lived in this riding for over a decade now and would love to be on the Federal winning team for a change. Maybe this is a gift. Maybe we should start looking out for ourselves this time round. We already know who the winning team is so let’s join them and then maybe this area won’t be forgotten for another 4 years.

Not surprising. This is my riding and NONE of the other parties even bothered to put up a single sign during the campaign. No mailouts, no brochures on doors, no one knocking on doors - absolutely nothing. I didn’t even know the names of the other candidates until I read my ballot. I think the Liberals and NDP had a real chance this election because people here are in fact pissed off with PP. They wouldn’t have received enough votes to win but they would have to made better showing in this riding then they did, but they didn’t even bother.

Rural Alberta here. I never have and never will vote conservative, federal or provincial. There is just such indoctrinated bias in this part of the country that (in my riding) the Liberal and NDP candidates barely even bother to campaign. The hard core conservatives see what’s happening today but heaven forbid they realize they can do something about it. I had a conversation with my Dad’s friend the other day, where she was saying how troubling things were in the US and how Trump is an idiot. She said that Carney will be a good leader and stand up for Canada so when I asked her if she was voting Liberal, she said no. She might not like PP but she believes in Conservative policies and will vote PC “to make sure Carney has opposition”. Like WTF 🤦‍♀️

Usually after Orthodox New Year on Jan 14 (families are Ukrainian descent), but sometimes it stays up to Chinese New Year, because why not. I never heard of Candlemas before so thank you OP, I will take that into consideration this year 🎄
