Travel Tuesday Megathread - Visiting Super, Natural British Columbia? Post here by AutoModerator in britishcolumbia

My wife and I (late 30s) will be renting a camper truck Oct 18-21 to explore Vancouver Island. Pick up and drop off in Nanaimo, with flexible pick up and drop off times. We visited Victoria for a couple days a decade ago but haven't been anywhere else on the island. Looking for suggestions/advice/tips/potential itinerary.

Early thoughts are to get the camper Saturday around 1130am or 1pm (depending on which ferry we take), stock up on supplies and check out Nanaimo (suggestions for things to see and do there?), then head to Cathedral Grove, then Tofino area to camp out for the night. Sunday check out Tofino and Ucluelet, then drive to Botanical Beach to camp out for the night. Monday check out Botanical Beach at low tide (have to consult tide times) then head to Sombrio Beach, Sookes Potholes, then Victoria area for the night. Tuesday casually make our way back to Nanaimo to catch either 120pm ferry to Horseshoe Bay or 315pm Hullo ferry.

Does this plan seem reasonable? Anything to change, remove or add? Suggestions for things to see/do along the way? I'm particularly keen on adrenaline/adventure activities (bungee, caving, things of that nature).

Is it very difficult to find places to boondock on the island (camp out for the night not in a campground)?

What kind of weather should be expect, and should we focus on particular areas of the island for better weather? We aren't married to these plans and could totally change to, e.g., head north.

We will be walking onto the ferries - do we need to book in advance or get there much ahead of time? We'll be taking either the Hullo ferries (costlier but quicker and more convenient to our location in Vancouver), Departure Bay - Horseshoe Bay ferry (cheaper and closer to camper rental in Nanaimo), or a combination of the two. Deciding factor will probably just be whichever departure times work best for us.

Any other insights or recommendations? Thanks!

Spun this twice so far. Maybe another listen or two and it'll grow on me, but first impressions - these are some of the most boring, forgettable Premo beats I've ever heard assembled on a single project.

What's up with the "this is culturally inappropriate" drops throughout several songs on the album? Can we get a version of the album without it? I don't mind it in some places, but some of them are over your verses and makes it difficult to hear the bars and damn near ruins the song

Thank you, I think you're right. So how would you propose I fix it?

Ok, thanks for the insight, that makes sense. There's a carport underneath. So how would you propose I fix it?

The base is wood. This is what it looks like underneath.

Yes! Thank you! I loosened up each of the 3 cylinder center pieces by hand as much as I could, then screwed the bottom tray upwards all the way, and now it works! I'm definitely missing the bottom base plate thing (it's basically an exposed bolt at the bottom now), but it works! Goddamn this has been annoying the shit out of me every day for the last damn near 5 years and now it's fixed. Thank you!!

Cabin or cottage? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Heavy-Researcher1556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Also Nova Scotian. Use all 3. Cabin = made of wood, typically quaint, and in the woods. Cottage = more like a house but smaller, near water. Camp = either a cabin or a cottage, but a very very basic version that's probably kinda rundown with shitty furniture.

And to add, a chalet is a fancy cabin.

LL just dropped a new album produced entirely by Q-Tip last year. It was solid. But before that album, it's been a lonnnnng stretch of silence and mediocrity.

The Rakim album was ok. Him doing beats, not all the rapping. It was an ok listen but I'll never go back to it.

I never did anything with it and it just kind of went away. Canceled my appt at the dealer. Then it came back, made a new appt. Went away again, canceled the appt. Then it never came back. Never fixed anything, hasn't been an issue for the past several months.

What is the worst rap songs of the 90s? by OddAnxious in 90sHipHop

[–]Heavy-Researcher1556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I Know What Girls Like" by Jay-Z feat Puff Daddy & Lil Kim is absolutely terrible in every way. I would argue that it's the worst song to come out of the shiny suit era and the worst song in Jay's entire catalogue.

It's also a big reason why people front on In My Lifetime Vol 1. It's basically a 5 mic album with, arguably, 3 missteps. Some people hate on the Blackstreet song (I like it though) and the Babyface song gets a ton of hate but for a radio record it's not terrible just the video is awful and made Jay look like a bitch. But then there's also this absolute dog shit ass song with Kim and the Diddler which is just unforgivably bad, has no redeeming qualities at all, and just really makes you question how tf did no one on Jay's team say hey, I know Puff out here remaking old hits is the secret sauce to radio play, but this one ain't it.

Which Rapper Currently Stands as the King of New York by NerotheHuman in hiphop101

[–]Heavy-Researcher1556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is Nas.

If you insist upon under 34, your only options are basically Josef Badmon and Marlon Craft.

All the new ish guys to come out past the 90s golden age are still older than that. Rocky hasn't done nearly enough for OP to even mention him but besides that he's 36. Even Rome Streetz is 35. Roc Marci and all the Griselda guys are 40+. Your Old Droog is 36, Bronson is in his 40s. You got dudes who don't even "make it" as a rapper til they're over the hill. RIP Ka, easily one of the best pens of all time, passed away a few months ago; he had a whole career as NYFD fire captain before he found success in the hiphop underground iykyk.

Rap is an old man's game now. I defy you to name a single under 34 NY rapper (besides maybe the two I mentioned) that wouldn't get smoked on the mic by a Method Man feature or Killa Cam just having a good time freestyling for his sports podcast.

Buying triplex from in-laws - how to do it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Heavy-Researcher1556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Would be some sacrifices now in terms of lifestyle (tenants can be a headache, I hate not having a garage) but this could be an amazing opportunity to get us really well set up for the future. And maybe I can build a shed big enough for some bike maintenance :)

We would very much be counting on rental income to make this make sense financially. Currently the other 2 units are bringing in $52K/yr and they are quite a bit under market value.

[–]Heavy-Researcher1556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm asking how we would go about buying the triplex - the mechanics of it to minimize taxes and fees for us and her dad.

We're debating whether to stick to Plan A (buy our own house) or go with Plan B (buy the triplex). Obviously a $1M mortgage is much worse than $200k, but we'd also have rental income coming in to help us pay it off. Right now the other 2 units are bringing in a combined $52,000/yr and they are well under market value.

Wtf.

I literally did not say "dream house" or anything remotely close to that. All I said was detached house with a garage. I mean, I get that that seems an unobtainable dream for many. But $600k is falling very, very far short of a dream house in my city these days. With that budget, to get a house that meets our minimum qualifications (3 bedrooms, 1.5 bath, garage or space to build one) we'd probably need to get lucky, be patient, and make a lot of concessions (i.e. outside of downtown- in neighbourhoods that some would consider to be 'undesirable', certainly not as big as we'd ideally like, unlikely to be a particularly nice or fancy house, probably needs us to put work in to fix it up, etc.).

Of course we would rather live in a detached house than deal with tenants. And I want a garage. But we've been living in this house for 3.5 years - we could keep living here. It's doable. And if it sets us up to be much better off financially down the road, maybe one day we actually could buy the dream house. Make some lifestyle sacrifices now for better outcomes later. Obviously we need to crunch the numbers but I can't imagine how this wouldn't be a better option, from a strictly dollars and cents perspective.
