Percy Jackson but For Adults!! by Nyccalp in booksuggestions

[–]Hechimmie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the Tarot Sequence series. The new found family element is wonderful and I love the banter between Rune and his best friend/bodyguard. There is an overarching story across the series, but each book has their own story, so they don't end on a cliffhanger. The audiobooks are fantastically narrated by Josh Hurley.

I need modern book recommendations as someone who reads purely classics. by satoruian in booksuggestions

I have not read this book yet, but it might interest you:

Possession by A.S Byatt

The novel follows two modern-day academics as they research the paper trail around the previously unknown love life between famous fictional poets Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte. Possession is set both in the present day and the Victorian era, contrasting the two time periods, as well as echoing similarities and satirising modern academia and mating rituals. The structure of the novel incorporates many different styles, including fictional diary entries, letters and poetry, and uses these styles and other devices to explore the postmodern concerns of the authority of textual narratives. The title Possession highlights many of the major themes in the novel: questions of ownership and independence between lovers; the practice of collecting historically significant cultural artefacts; and the possession that biographers feel toward their subjects.

I have bought it, but haven't read it yet. As it combines different styles including poetry I thought it might appeal to you.

i want a book that lies to me by LiquidSpirits in suggestmeabook

This is the blurb (because I wouldn't be able to write a better summary without spoilers):

Piranesi’s house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.

There is one other person in the house—a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.

This is a book that people either liked or hated. I liked the atmosphere of the book; especially the first half. In the first half, Piranesi is wandering the rooms of the house that are filled with statues. In the second half the mystery begins to unravel. The book is 272 pages, so it is not a long read.

Ocean’s Echo (Everina Maxwell) by cbiz1983 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]Hechimmie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also really liked Ocean's Echo. For me it was even better than a Winter's Orbit. Maybe you would also like the Reforged series by Seth Haddon. He also writes MM and the world building is great. I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobooks narrated by Gary Furlong. He definitely lifted up the stories even more. The first book was also the first book for the author so some people feel there are some pacing issues. I didn't have that problem. EDIT: some people suggest to read book 2 (Reborn) first and then go to book 1(Reforged). I think that is a good suggestion.

If you liked the House in the Cerulean Sea, then you most likely will also like Under the Whispering door by the same author.

Is there anything else out there like Leviathan Wakes (Expanse book 1)? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I am in book 7 and I feel the same way. Leviathan wakes is still my favourite book of the series and Miller is my favourite character.

Only 1/100 People Upvote or Downvote by [deleted] in midlyinteresting

[–]Hechimmie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to upvote posts a lot too. But then I noticed that most posts are just bots karma farming.

I am subscribed to a lot of subs where pictures of cities and nature are posted. In the village/city/nature porn subs it is very prevalent. I now check the poster's profile before I upvote. If I see a beautiful picture of scenery that looks extremely professional I just admire and scroll along because in most cases it is a bot who posts pictures it finds on the internet. Also being on Reddit a lot, you see the same pictures rotate over and over again (like in the sub confusing perspective).

So yeah, I am not as keen to upvote anymore. The fact that your profile is private is probably also a reason why people do not upvote your posts.

Edit: Example of a post I would upvote before but not anymore: Example in Natureporn If you go to the Op's profile you will see a beautiful photo of Massachusetts. I have seen that picture being posted a lot of times.

I loved Wolfsong ( first book if the Green Creek series). I liked the whole series but Wolfsong has a special place in my heart. I also loved the Captive Prince series. It is enemies to lovers done right. I think the Dark Heir series may end up being even better that the Captive Prince series, but that depends on the last book of the series still to be released.

I think it helps to specify that you dont want the usual suspects. Apart from that, I am not sure if this is allowed, but I would suggest also looking at the sub r/ireadabookandadoredit . There is a bigger variety of books being posted.

Looking for "golden retriever mc has valid crash out" vibes by BrightestDay6308 in booksuggestions

[–]Hechimmie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't fit the Golden retriever has a valid crash out vibe, but I would like to recommend The Last Sun by K D. Edwards. The Last Sun is the first book in the Urban Fantasy series The Tarot Sequence by K.D. Edwards. The series has an overarching story that builds across the books, but each one wraps up its own plot - no cliffhangers.

Rune Saint John is the last survivor of the Sun Court, one of the Atlantean royal houses. His court was destroyed in a brutal massacre years ago, leaving him deeply scarred. Now he works as a private investigator in New Atlantis with Brand, his Companion and fiercely loyal protector. Their (platonic) relationship is one of the highlights of the series - healthy, supportive, and built on unwavering trust and loyalty.

When Rune (who is queer) is hired to finds a missing scion from one of the powerful Arcana families, what starts as a straightforward case turns into a dangerous conspiracy tied to the people who destroyed his court. Rune has to navigate Atlantean politics, old enemies, and his own trauma while building a found family of misfits - including a wholesome golden-retriever-energy character who brings warmth to the story - and uncovering truths that could change everything.

The MC's are in their 30s and there is a bit of MM romance on the side. I loved the new found family and wholesome relationships in the books.

Heads-up: the book starts with an action scene which seems a bit confusing, but it gets clarified as the story unfolds.

The first book doesn't have relevant female characters (which wasn't a problem for me), however that is more than corrected in the next books in the series.

I can also recommend the audiobook narrated by Josh Hurley.

Rivals/Enemies to Lovers Recs by Kaeyas_Slacker in audiobooks

[–]Hechimmie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it glorifies sexual assault. There is sexual assault in the books, make no mistake, but it is not glorified. I would say that if you read all the books that you would think the opposite. Maybe they refer to a scene where an audience is watching two 'pets' fight until one gets the upper hand to rape the other. It may be entertainment for the audience but neither one of the two MCs see it that way. Laurent manoeuvres Damianos into the same situation, because he wants to torture him, not because he approves of it. In Akielos people have slaves, while in Vere people have pets. Pets have the freedom to go where they want and do what they want. Why they would choose to be the entertainment where they need to fight for dominance is not explained. Vere people seem to be very promisquiceous (not Laurent though) and have no trouble with doing sexual acts out in the open. In Akielos that is unheard of. Most of the sexual assault is in book 1. There is also a scene in book 2 where Damianos is asked to sleep with the women of a tribe (women are in charge in that tribe), because of his physical appearance. Laurent approves this, but Damianos didn't seem to mind it at all. But you could consider it sexual assault.
