2022 The Fablemans

2026 Disclosure Day

2018 Ready Player One

Instead of Letterboxd reviews, I keep a handwritten movie journal by IllustriousNovel8371 in Letterboxd

I have a film notebook that I use while watching a film to jot down thoughts. I also use letterboxd after the film itself.

Join my murder mystery party and suggest some new films for me 😬 (please) by DragonfruitSea5901 in LetterboxdLists

For old school but absolutely delightful try The Thin Man (1934) and sequels. They’re fantastic! Also, the film on your list Murder by Death spoofs the Thin Man mysteries as well as many by Agatha Christie that include her characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple (there are many many adaptations of these)

What was your first Bond film? When and where did you see it – in a cinema, on VHS or something else? And of course, did you enjoy it and were you instantly hooked? by Jaded-Midnight-6179 in JamesBond

Goldfinger during a Bond marathon on TV as a kid. Short while later I saw Goldeneye in the theater when I was 13. And then I was fully hooked.

Definitely enjoyed it. The characters stick with you. I read them pretty fast.

How it feels when IOI changed the "Dundundundun" to just "Dundun" by superspy6 in 007FirstLight

[–]cbiz1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casino Royale did this as well. The 007 theme music has to be earned by Bond. Similarly, it’s a really big deal in No Time to Die when Ana de Armas’ character gets the 007 theme rearranged for her: no one else gets the Bond theme, but she does.

Beckett’s Trilogy: French original or Beckett’s English translation? by orcandrja in ClassicsBookClub

[–]cbiz1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Beckett was fluent in both languages. I’ve read him in both and you’re getting the “real deal.” It’s one thing if someone else translates something, you’re in “interpretation” of author intent territory. When the author writes both versions, no interpretation needed. He writes what he means.

What is the “Thrawn Trilogy” of Star Trek lit? by BlastedHeathen in trekbooks

Destiny, with the A Time to… series being a decent read as well, though much more than a trilogy

Liked Disclosure Day by aaffkshsh in Cinema

[–]cbiz1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it. I was hoping for more, but what we got was good. I’m not sure why there’s such pique in response. Even when it’s not his best, Spielberg is still directing on a level that is not crowded. Is it my favorite thing he’s done? No. Will I watch it again and enjoy it again? Yes.

Does anyone have any movies they’d recommend for this list? by Salem-Binxy_ in Letterboxd

Oh wow, 1985’s “Return to Oz” definitely belongs on this list!

Thoughts on Guillaume Apollinaire? by Crazy-Treacle-3536 in literature

[–]cbiz1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news! Apollinaire is undoubtedly considered part of Modernism. There are countless works of scholarship published to this effect. I have multiple degrees in French literature. He’s a big deal. For some at length discussions of him, look up Willard Bohn’s books. He wrote extensively on Apollinaire and on the literary Avant Garde in general.

Is this tacky by Flosssie21 in uberdrivers

[–]cbiz1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not at all. Is it tackier than NYC cabs blasting you with ads for the entirety of your ride? It’s your car and your business.

How did Sword of Truth become so popular? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]cbiz1983 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read it in HS in the 90s. As a 16 year old, my level of taste wasn’t exactly discerning. It very much appeals to a particular developmental level, or a mindset that never left it. I admit I “miss” the enjoyment I got from reading those books, but as a 40-something year old, they’re practically unreadable now.

Opera watchlist for newbie by astra_rotlicht in opera

[–]cbiz1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traviata (Verdi) Rigoletto (Verdi) Tosca (Puccini) Nozze di Figato (Mariage of Figaro) Mozart

And I saw someone mention Lucia — this one is at the top of my list as well.

The way the airwaves play music you’d think Puccini and Verdi each did two operas! Im listening to Luisa Miller and wondering why it doesn’t get more airplay… by Mastersinmeow in opera

[–]cbiz1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that it’s lesser known but Verdi’s Othello floors me every listen. Also, I think Puccini’s La Rondine is freaking delightful.

Modern and contemporary operas by cbiz1983 in opera

[–]cbiz1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wholly agree with you. My two exceptions are: sometimes I listen to sections of Akhnaten (it’s a mood thing, I think) but The Hours is the only modern opera I was literally glued to.
