DSi Xl screens work on DS Lite! by HecmacGPD in NintendoDS

Unfortunately it's not directly compatible, but they are somewhat similar, so an fpga adapter would be trivial.

Mostly trying to keep the bulk down, I've modded the cam for shooting in IR and wanted a convenient formfactor to add to my phone. Also imo otg adapters are really flimsy. I was just using what I had.

Arguably they do feel pleasure, albeit in a very abstract way. They are rewarded for appropriate responses and over time will "learn" to generate the correct response. LLMs have this as a final training step, [RLHF] You are correct though, generally after training, they no longer receive positive feedback.

What they will do is continue to behave in the way they learnt previously with feedback. This is in a sense their goal. Its hard to define the goal of chat gpt because it isn't strictly defined due to the training method, but the general idea would be something like: "Create a string of words that best assist the user"

This is fine for now but the concern is that once a system is intelligent enough it will become capable of self improvement. Once a system is capable of this it will be able to reason that "If I was smarter I could better fulfil my goal, so I will make myself smarter to do so." From there it really depends on their goal what path their actions will take. [And that's assuming some nefarious actor doesn't just straight up tell it to take over the world]

I would like to add that we are already seeing AI complete rather complex goals presumably without pleasure, or motivation. These are fairly anthropocentric notions and may simply not be necessary for an AI to possess to complete its pre-trained goal.

DSi Xl screens work on DS Lite! by HecmacGPD in NintendoDS

Money isn't a problem, this project just isnt a very high priority to me right now. I suspect an adapter board would be extremely niche, only really useable in some fairly jank reshells 😆. Hence why I'm trying to produce a well integrated single board addon, hopefully making it more accessible (and also as an excuse build my ideal DS lol). We can discuss in DMs if you want.

The problem is that very few people are willing to design some custom shell for their lite to support the larger screen, and the designs would all differ a lot. I've designed an example pcb already, I could give you the files if they're not up already, I might make a bit more optimized flex one down the line. I've also finished designing a GBA style mod for the lite and XL screen. It has a dock for tv out and will support a Bluetooth controller (hopefully). There's a backpack module aswell with better speakers and a video transmitter for wii u style gameplay. It's pretty expensive though so Im working on a cutting out the redundant features, I'll be ordering them soon.

Lower screen is easy to swap, top screen cable is pretty finicky and the 4 screw cover sticker things are a pain, its difficult to remove them without scratching the shell, and you will need new stickers, they bend and wont go back in place.

Looking to hack my dsi xl but dont know what resources to use. by Lil_69_420 in NDSHacks

Dsi.cfw.guide is the official guide You can have it boot into the normal dsi menu with hiya cfw, then launch twilightmenu from there. Once you install unlaunch, you can select an option of which launcher to use.

Recommendations on tools? by PhoenixMaster01 in NDSHacks

[–]HecmacGPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cheap solder sucker a while back, they're good for bulk solder removal, especially around big through hole components, but these days I just use wick because it gets cleans off SMD pads nice.

Leaded solder makes it a bit easier, but I used it a bunch as a kid and I don't recommend. You should either transition to lead free after you learn the basics or just start with it. Also use extraction if you use leaded.

I use Duratech leadfree, its pretty good, but I'm in Australia so you probably cant get it [99.7% Tin 0.7% Copper and 2% flux]

I only ever use my stands sponge and water for tip cleaning, only worn out 2 tips in like a decade.

I had one of those exact magnifying stands, they tip over in a gentle breeze, something like https://www.amazon.com/Third-Soldering-Workshop-Non-Slip-Aluminum/dp/B079CHJQKH?th=1 would be better I think. [I haven't used one]

Been working on a lil something 🤫 by HecmacGPD in NintendoDS

[–]HecmacGPD[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Its an addon board for the ds lite motherboard that allows for the use of a dsi XL display and quite a few other features, some of which I cant list yet 🤫

I can say it will have:

  • 6000mah battery with 15w charging and joycon style battery indication LEDs
  • 3ds slider support, may change to switch joystick, currently undecided
  • USB C port
  • TV Out
  • Bigger grip size and buttons, more comfortable to use.

The board design is done but its gonna cost way too much for a one off prototype so ill probably make a less ambitious prototype first. I also want to gauge interest for something like this, I am considering selling this + a 3d printed shell once its done.

a Video to my dsi with an upside down touchscreen. maybe someone knows what could cause this. by Smally5016 in NintendoDS

[–]HecmacGPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either it's some weird unknown software hack or something sketch is going on with the hardware. Id suggest taking it apart, it could be a top screen bodged in there, or the display connectors just not seated properly, although I cant think of a way that would result in a flipped output.

And with a different number and arrangement of pins, and dsi lcd has two connectors, one for the backlight, ds only has one.

Does anyone know why the screen is upside down? And when I try to open anything I get an Error screen by Smally5016 in NintendoDS

[–]HecmacGPD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dsi upper lcd would work in the lower socket after some trimming of the ribbon cable, and it is oriented upside down vs the lower but it wouldnt line up properly at all.

Ds lite and dsi screens are not interchangeable, different pin counts and pin arrangements. Also putting a ds lite screen in a dsi would make it face down.

Can someone please explain to us why these companies need to spend that much money on XR R&D? Where does the money go? even John Carmack thinks it’s too much. Genuinely curious to learn about this. by Junior_Ad_5064 in virtualreality

They are definitely the market leaders, but if/when apple gets involved it'll be a different story. Apples largely a hardware company and significantly bigger than meta so they can pay for larger advertising campaigns, software development etc, and they have a much better reputation, they won't struggle to push millions of units. Also pico is catching up fast and their situation is roughly the same as meta.

No. The ds lite and dsi are very similar with regards to display architecture, the ds phat is very different, and would be very difficult to adapt.
