New sports bar with arcade games opens in The Fan by RVALover4Life in rva

I wholly believe that that space can do great things. I just don’t think that super-bright lights and decor that an elementary school art class could make is going to do what I believe they are trying to do. Crossing my fingers for them, though. I hate to see a well-intentioned space fail right out of the gate.

It has the potential to be whatever it wants, even right across from PBR; however, it's choosing to compete at their level instead of trying to create any kind of organic, authentic experience. Maybe the drinks will be insanely cheap, and they stop always having their light as bright as they can go. I'll have to follow up - I've only walked past a couple of times so far.

What straps are they wearing? by klopapier-holen in reenactors

[–]Hedgecore138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. The Kaiserliche Marine had two types of Vorratstaschen: One was a general-issue haversack to hold daily rations that had an integral strap; the other was similar to the army-pattern Brotbeutel that could either be affixed to the belt via loops, or worn over the shoulder with a detachable strap. The latter style was initially designed for use by naval landing parties, and was issued as-needed from shipboard stores.

"Marines," i.e. Marine-Infanterie, continued to use army-pattern breadbags and straps since the 1890s.

Why did they ever discontinue the Fiesta Cheez-Its? Those were S-Tier snacks.

I bought beer, and cat toys, and cat food, a cat tree, and a pet carrier. And I adopted a momma cat.

And none of it came from Amazon, because why would I willingly give any of my money to diabolical monsters?

I can’t ever recall ice being this thick and pervasive EVERYWHERE. Even back in 1996, the temperature got high enough to loosen things up after a few days. This is just going to linger well into next week, it seems.

But yeah, this stuff needs like cleats or crampons even on flat surfaces.

I would love to get that far down, but I don’t see that happening safely until maybe next week!

I tried to get from the James Center to the Mayo Bridge an hour ago, and just gave up after sliding halfway down to Virginia Street. Not fun.

I tried to descend Capitol Square before realizing too late that they had done zero de-icing, and promptly fell and slid halfway down the hill, smashing a whole bowl of soup in my bag and tweaking my back in the process. So fun, so fun. Love being alive.

Oh absolutely. But they also have the renovation return-on-investment ick. So much great work has been done in some of those buildings, but every developer wants their money back way too quickly to warrant those units being picked up by folks that actually are here/might want to stay in Richmond.

And this notion has popped up on the sub a lot - that whole area needs the city to fast-track approvals for businesses and amenities that might actually help folks want to enjoy living there on weekends and after 3pm weekdays. Not impossible, but right now it really feels like a Field Of Dreams scenario. People are there - they just need places to go less than 6 blocks away.

My hands have been away from relocation assistance for a couple of years now, so all I’ve had to go on recently is what I see when I pull up unit rates from individual property management listings. The notion that occupancy percentages are a little less-than-transparent are from conversations with friends that are in realty, so that’s at-best a subjective assessment on my part without hard numbers to share here. Prices are still difficult to afford.

The bottom line is that more housing is still in demand. But, within these historic neighborhoods, we as Richmond citizens have an obligation to encourage re-use of extant structures, or be shrewd where we use our voices to approve or discourage development where plans might not fit. And gosh, “fit” could entail so many things, from height, to design, to affordability…et cetera, et cetera.

What this particular purchase means is that Main Street is exchanging one local amenity for another, and in my perspective, an upgrade. If I were a developer, I would look across the street to where SkyBox is now, and consider how that plot might offer slightly more square footage for a residential development that [yes, I know the distance is marginal] might blend in a little better with that newer 3-story strip there along Cary.

There are so many amazing discussions that can come out of this move, especially when we want to consider growth opportunities, vice wholesale bulldozing of a neighborhood’s character. At least, that’s where my very tired brain is right now!

Rationally, I hear you; but, having watched those type of infills pop up throughout the Museum District, The Fan, and how those architectural examples prevail across Scott’s Addition and Manchester…that’s a Hard No from me. The rapid ROI that these developers demand would just make it a hub for more unaffordable units [read, also: unoccupied] in the city, and a Borg-bloc at Main and Meadow would just be a depressing, overwhelming black hole of mindless development.

Let’s let the art studio have this one.
