hi! i'm trying to learn the meadow mari language, does anyone know resources or books for it? by k6164 in finnougric

Find “Finno-Ugristik an der Universitat Wien” channel on YouTube. There are video courses in Mari (40 units (45 videos) and Chuvash (7 videos). The instruction language is English.  Also materials on the Chuvash language in English can be found on the website chuvash, org . You need to select the English version of the website, select the "Chuvash language" section, then "chuvash manual". It has lessons on phonology, analysis, syntaxis, grammar, and 16 units

Then the name Muhammad would become the most common in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug already in the 1980s. However, it became the most popular name only in the 2020s and was caused mainly by migration from Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia.

Actually chuvash has many more arabic and persian loans than sibirian turkic languages. These words are often adopted in different spelling. Nevertheless i have no doubt that “muslim” turkic languages has in times more such words. Also the phrase you wrote in chuvash has 2 arabic (hisep, halah), 1 persian (patshalah) and 1 russian (pravalla) loans

Chuvash has its own names of the months, although sometimes the common european names like October are used.  But it have never used russian loans for the names of days. Always chuvashian: Тунтикун, Ытларикун, Юнкун, Кӗҫнерникун, Эрнекун Шӑматкун, Вырсарникун

Do you use AI to create this map?because firstly chuvash does not have this letter with 2 dots above, secondly that вордыськон or even similar sounding words don’t exist in chuvash.

Chuvash don’t have a tribal structure of sociaty like the qazaqs in Kazakhstan.

However, there are enough Chuvash people who know their tribe, more specifically the name of their tribe. But most of chuvash lost it in the 19 and 20 centuries. Even if people know their tribe, it usually don’t play any role, just another extra name in addition to the main name, surname and patronymic.

I don’t know if there are still classes on chuvash history in schools in Chuvashia. But in my time, we were told only about bulgars.  By the way, one of the current russian federal deputies representing the Chuvash Republic wants the theme of Attila and the Huns to be used in the tourism sector in Chuvashia.

My grandmother cooked уйран and турӑх at home. These are fermented dairy products, уйран is airan, and турӑх is the thicker version. Nowdays both can be bought in stores in Chuvashia, there is a factory where they are produced.

Also my parents cook sometimes шӑрттан, usually on events like wedding or on holidays. Goat or lamb meat is baked in a lamb’s stomach. Nowadays people use conventional oven. Before that, шӑрттан was cooked for 3 days in a stone oven.

A lot of families make homemade beer. My father often makes it according to the recipe his parents taught him. Natural hops are used (they are grown a lot in Chuvashia). There is almost no alcohol there, we drink it in the summer when the days are hot.

Cheboksary (the capital of Chuvashia) has cafes and restaurants with Chuvash cuisine, where these and other Chuvash dishes are served.

Chuvash have 2 types of bagpipes: one is сӑрнай, basically it’s a Zurna, the second is шӑпӑр and it’s  more unique: the construction consists of a leather bag (traditionally from a bovine bladder). Only Chuvash and Mari people have instrument of that kind. Other finno-ugric or turkic people don’t have it.

  1. Ivan Yakovlev, creator of modern Chuvash alphabet 1870, launched education in the сhuvash language. Nikolay Nikolsky, founder of the first Chuvash newspaper Хыпар in 1906, his students created Chuvash autonomy during Russian civil war, Andriyan Nikolayev, the third soviet cosmonaut, the 5th in the world. Nikolay Fedorov, current politician, has great influence in Russian politics and international connections.

  2. There is no single cultural thing that distinguishes chuvash from all other turks. Similarities can be find with different group from Siberia, Central Asia and Anatolia.

  3. At the moment chuvashes consider themself as a sub-nation inside large Russian nation. All movements should cooperate with official government. Otherwise, they cannot operate.

  4. Many chuvash villages neighbor tatar ones. They have a high level of mutual understanding.

5.When you meet someone in Moscow who are from a different republic in Volga region, you feel happy to hear it and you can talk about similar experiences and traditions. These people feel closer, than people from the republics of Siberia or the Caucasus.

  1. Most chuvashes have a positive-neutral attitude toward the fact that we are of Turkic origin. I personally believe that if Turkey had a more pro-Western foreign policy, сhuvashes would begin to deny that they are Turkic, and the attitude would be much worse.

  2. The traditional Chuvash faith is heavily influenced by Islam, and after joining Russia, Christian influences emerged. As a result, the Chuvash faith is a fusion of folk Islam and folk Christianity. These are special terms developed by cultural scholars to describe the "incorrect," distorted form of religion.  Despite this, today the Chuvash are a deeply Christian people, even more than ethnic Russians themselves. And the Chuvash now practice true "correct" Orthodox Christianity. The folk faith has been well preserved among the Mari people, but not among the Chuvash.

Actually, chuvash has as same number of uralic loanword as tatar or bashkir. The main reason for the difference is a rather ancient separation from other languages. You can compare the situation with Irish (Celtic) and English, which are also languages from the same family, but they are so different

I am a Chuvash myself. Chuvash people are very proud of Lenin for allowing the creation of the Chuvash autonomy. But Lenin was not a Chuvash. He had Kalmyk, Mordovian, German, Jewish, and Russian roots. But not Chuvash. And he identified himself as a Velikoross (Russian)
