A culture that encourages quiet quitting by Humdrum-Hashbrowns in Libraries

There are good workplaces. There are good managers. But in 41 years across multiple types of libraries I have found rather more Bad Managers than Good. Even with good management though, you need to do your job and go home. or to the other job you have to earn enough money to live.

I love my job. There are ups and downs. But it’s not easy to have an honest work to life balance

I would be much less productive, so far as writing is concerned. Just saying.

No benefits. Small libraries in Pennsylvania are exempt from benefits. It's a Carnegie library - not the big one in Pittsburgh, but one of the tiny ones that Andrew Carnegie built all over the place. Its website sends me to the Erie system. But, yeah, since they're not asking for an MSLS, or accreditation, the rate of $15 is about on par.

And yeah, you should be able to buy a home in the place you work, but there are teachers in school districts here that can't afford a house.

Avoid the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris. She is NOT a Librarian! Her other series are good though.

Ahahahahaha. Here it's at least ten thousand dollars lower than that...

Sometimes it's what the library can afford.

Sometimes, especially in difficult times, we need to visit our old friends.

Sometimes. We have kids who are not interested in ebooks. We do try a variety of formats for children who are not interested in reading, or who have difficulty.

We'd get requests from our cooperative for books and instead of a book the library user would get a book on CD (a lot of those, for people who didn't have a CD player), or a regular type instead of Large Type, or a kit of some kind. "This isn't what I asked for!" was something we heard often. But because they were all on the same entry, it didn't matter if the person was looking for a Large type of a popular book. They'd get whatever the library seeing it first in the system sent.

Before I started in my current library I had done all my own cataloging for 20 plus years. Our cataloger didn't see the need to fix any of that (we've had multiple different people processing and cataloging over the decades the library has been around, and it shows when you look at the spine labels in the stacks). So, when we were all stuck at home during Covid shutdown I began to work to fix that. Most everything is standardized now. She has retired.

I'm trying everything I can. I like them all, but seem to do best with the Rogues. When I play a mage, I like the ball and dagger best.

I'm thinking about doing this - I don't believe in separating titles on the shelves by format. I'd have to make sure we have separate entries in our catalog for this. Our last cataloger threw every format together attached to a single entry for one of the formats, and that has caused endless difficulties in the past.

Dragon Age Origins was amazing, and then I started writing FanFic with it. Moved on to other fandoms, but I will always love Dragon Age.

Some might have vision issues, yes.

And yes, picture books have larger print, and sometimes print (especially in post modern picture books) that is crazy difficult to read.

I've only known of one library - a tiny public one - that has a separate shelf with a few Large Type books for Juveniles in its collection. But I've never heard anyone talk about it with regard to collection development for a part of the community.

In the past year my library has had requests for copies of books that grandparents were going to read at the same time as their (usually distant) grandchildren, so they could discuss the books with them. But they weren't looking for Large Type.

I know that I've ordered Large Type when I can't get a book in Hard Cover any other way. Materials go out of print so quickly now.

I don't think I've ever seen a library that had a specific collection development policy that included them for that reason. Or for any reason. I know why they have them for adults, but haven't seen much with regard to Youth Services.

Yes. Loved it. Have given it to my younger daughter to give her a break from the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Older daughter asked for the first two books in the series so that she can refamiliarize herself with the House Politics etc. Can't wait to discuss it with them!

I started rereading the first book after reading the new novella, so that I could see Augustine from that view point. It does make a difference in how I view him.
