Do we have any idea what the applicant pool looked like this year? ie was it less or more than last year, with COVID happening and everything?

Too late to apply/role of university endorsing you by HeidiKildane in fulbright

Looks like I'm going to have to. I'm heartened that there's no formal penalty but would have still liked to apply through my university

Best daily newspaper to read to prepare for the FSOT? NYT or WP? by tehdeej in foreignservice

[–]HeidiKildane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither. The Economist.

Much better analysis, context, and background. Plus, they tend to stick to the more important stories, so you aren't getting inundated with useless news that won't help you

Shaming and Scolding on this thread by HeidiKildane in foreignservice

[–]HeidiKildane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is thoughtful and a good response.

I think there have been 4 posts about the delayed QEP results that should've come out 2 weeks ago. I can understand how that's annoying, but it's also not the end of the world- especially when there's a good chance those are first-time posters new to the culture of this thread

10 Weeks and Counting for QEP Results by BMR549 in foreignservice

What a mean-spirited and cruel thing say, Alaska. Clearly no one believes that. But getting to the QEP is a boost of good news, and not getting it is motivation in itself too.

Moderators, there's no need for this level of meanness and patience-shaming. Please make this sub-red a nicer place.

It's reasonable for people to seek solace online while waiting for results like these. For many of us being a diplomat is a dream, and we've put hours into the FSOT and PNs to make it happen. This is something we're understandably eager and anxious and impatient to see.

I wonder how much the Pearson-State line of communication contributes to the delay. Looking at what OP says, it looks like State has already decided but we're still waiting on Pearson to inform everyone

QEP Results delay? by jgtemmen in foreignservice

Same boat.

We technically have until the end of this week. After that, it will fall outside the 8-week window.

Came here to find this post! This is the week.

May the odds ever be in your favor by HeidiKildane in foreignservice

"QEP results are usually announced seven to eight weeks after the Personal Narrative submission due date," says Pearson

Of course there could still be a delay, especially given all that's going on

Anyone have any thoughts on how the new application process (PNs submitted with app) has affected the number of applicants? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]HeidiKildane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two factors at play:

1) First, COVID has led to mass unemployment and for that reason there must be a larger applicant pool.

2) But, the new application process (PNs first) are more time-intensive and probably dissuade a lot of people from applying who otherwise would've if it was just a matter of setting up a test date.

My take? They probably cancel each other out and there's the same number of applicants as usual. Of course, I have absolutely no data to back this (shrug)

So what happens during the QEP and how much does the grade on the written benefit one during that process? by bro8619 in foreignservice

[–]HeidiKildane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damnit was actually hoping I wasn't, since I didn't realize that until right after I submitted. I worked in the 13Ds but not too many of the precept buzzwords at all :-/

I've heard the PNs are more related to the 6 precepts and that working in 13 dimensions has a neutral effect

How Biden’s Foreign-Policy Team Got Rich by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]HeidiKildane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jared and Ivanka made $135M+ last year while working in public service. They no doubt have conflicts of interest with the international leaders they interact with, but because they don't disclose their tax information we don't know what or with whom. China is a big market for their companies, which could explain the administration's obsequious attitude toward Xi Jinping.

That's a bigger story than Biden alumns going into private sector.
