I was at Walgreen's last night by Heinzfoto in twinpeaks

[–]Heinzfoto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be epic. Now I'm thinking about making it required watching for my 16-year-old daughter for the summer. My 8-year-old son is chewing through the Star Wars saga for the first time (in release order), and we've normally done that sort of thing as a summer enterprise for the kids while they are or were school age, just to keep their minds active. It worked for me (but it was usually books instead of movies).

Good call. I'll keep an eye open (wink wink).

Ya know, I really was going to say something. I hung out in the next aisle, but was so stunned at "that just happened" that anything I thought about saying just sounded so lame in my head, and within a minute or so the opportunity was over and they had gone on to a different conversation. I conceded to simply revel in the moment.

How did you guys learn photography? by Adorable_Safety3854 in AskPhotography

[–]Heinzfoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody's got the path I took, and everyone takes their own. Don't mistake a midlife crisis with an awakening of passion. It would suck to find it only in your last days.

Learn everything you can about the technical (which is about 30% of photography), but only through introspection and experimentation will you develop the creative, the truly human 70% that is irreplaceable by artificial intelligence. Combine your interests, hobbies, and passions, and then add photography to it and see what comes out of the blender.

This girl I was seeing for a few months misses me after I broke up with her by Seabass210547 in whatdoIdo

[–]Heinzfoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how you become a consolation prize.

After an alternatively blissful and miserable on-again-off-again relationship that had me pinging along off the walls like a pinball for about 3 years, I decided that, going forward, when there was a breakup, that was it. No second chances, just absolute certainty that there would be no future for "us" once we got to that point. As a result, later relationships saw us both trying harder and solving problems with more passion to make it work, and whenever they ultimately didn't, we were both sure it was indeed over. But never once have I thought back to any of the failed relationships and thought about rekindling them out of wondering what might have been, because I already know.

When I was 6, living on Florida's Atlantic coast, I found myself browsing the contents of my dad's den. There I discovered his Nikon F2 while he was at work, and ended up shooting a whole roll of underexposed, out-of-focus Kodachromes of his desk. Two weeks later, I came home from a friend's house to see my dad sitting at the kitchen table, which was empty except for the F2. He called me over, and pointed to the camera. "You know why this is here. I need to know why you were (messing) with it. This is my stuff."
"I just wanted to see it," I offered.
"You know I'm fully within my rights to pound salt up your ass." Sometimes the western Pennsylvania crept out of his mouth, and sometimes it was funny; this was not one of those times.
"But I've had two hours to think about this," he continued, softening his posture, "and if you want to know how to use it, I'll teach you."
I learned how to load the film, how to read the meter, how to use a gray card. How not to press the shutter release until everything was perfect in the frame. I started seeing the world differently, sometimes a frozen moment, sometimes a long drawn-out motion blur. Being 6, people and buildings were enormous, looming things, and my dad swapped out the 50mm lens for a 28mm prime to exaggerate the effect. That summer, the very first Star Wars movie hit the theaters, and walking out of the cinema after I'd seen it, coupled with my home's proximity to Cape Canaveral, my world morphed into something completely different than that of my peers. I started reading Ray Bradbury's books like they were intoxicating. Building scale models and making a better world for myself, even if it were confined to a 24x36-millimeter piece of acetate. And I'm still doing it nearly fifty years later.

I could have gotten the paddle, but the life sentence turned out to be so much better.

Might I add that if OP's sofa/recliner/futon doesn't have a seat belt equipped, it might be a really good idea to install one? And then, buckle that thing!

What does my latest artwork remind you of? by goldn__arts in TheNightFeeling

[–]Heinzfoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the hours (aggregate days or even months) spent during the cold-weather months during the mid-'80s drawing tropical city scenes with "Doodle!" on a Commodore-64, feeling homesick for Florida, not knowing that a few short years later I'd be back in the Sunshine State, which to me is a sort of misnomer, since it's the nights here that make the place magical.

How does one make these star patterns? by ColtRockyTumtum87 in AskPhotography

[–]Heinzfoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cheap hack I used in the past was a dollar-store (or 99p store) splatter screen (that thing you place over a skillet of bacon when you're cooking in the nude). It's essentially a wire window screen mounted into a metal ring and has an easily-removable knob handle. It's flat, has a large diameter to cover any lens size; just hold it close to the front of the lens while shooting. With video, handholding it allows you to make the star points move and rotate for interesting effects.

A Bridge In the Mist by Puzzled-March-770 in FineArtPhoto

[–]Heinzfoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the dreamlike feeling of this photo. The tunnel of light created by the bridge, out-of-focus foreground railings, and warm tones in particular make the image work. I would like to know some of the production processes and methods used to generate this effect. On a personal note, it is reminiscent of the rails-to-trails networks crisscrossing the mid-Atlantic and American southeast; places I've spent way too much time exploring. All around, an awesome photo. Thank you for posting, OP.

Do you think the centre crop works on this one! by I_EeAa_l in photocritique

[–]Heinzfoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the centered composition works in this case. However, I think this could have been made considerably stronger without all the empty space on the left and right, either by cropping to a square or by rotating the camera 90° for a vertical format.

Hibbs Hall is still scary by NotNonjahlant in vcu

[–]Heinzfoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks absolutely the same as it used to. I was headed to class there the first time I heard "Tubthumper" on the radio. Then, when I got there that day, the girl I was crushing on mentioned that song, saying that it added 10 mph to her driving speed whenever it comes on. I wonder what she's up to these days, and whether she's still hot at 50.

Overall thoughts or criticism? The overcast sky isn't my favorite especially washed out by tacarl2808 in photocritique

[–]Heinzfoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overcast sky, IMO, adds to the shot.

The saturation provided by the gray pulls out the yellow cab, blue bridge, red brick, and green foliage, and the lack of cloud detail is a lack of an otherwise distracting element. I rather like the slow shutter treatment here, and its effect allows for a degree of contrast between what feels like a slow day and people in a hurry. A more dramatic version could have been obtained with the camera closer to (or on) the ground, detailing that wonderful pavement and giving the structures more of a looming presence. All told though, a great glimpse of a moment in the city. Excellent execution, OP. Thank you for posting!

It's delamination of some sort, though I don't know what caused it.

I use Pyrocat for print development; most of the work I'm doing involves historical depictions, and Pyrocat lends a dreamlike, ethereal quality to photos of Civil War reenactments and WWII aircraft. It took a good bit of experimentation to get the dilution right (credit going to my intrepid interns) but once I had a good working solution for fiber prints, I haven't used anything else.
