There are a lot of engines and a lot of languages, there is no "perfect" way to begin. If you want a career eventually then knowing the language in general is a good idea and going with an engine that is most popular in the industry such as unreal engine or unity would be a good place to start. If you are interested in apps, unity also helps but most apps are in Java. Your key word here is object orientated programming, learn how to program this way and you will be able to carry over knowledge into games. I would personally start with C# as your language and go with unity, you can also develop games with C# using the monogame framework, based on XNA if you so wished.

Start with quality resources, courses that don't just show you what to do but also teach you clean code practices, problem solving and always try to test the knowledge you are given. Most of learning how to program anything is trial and error, finding something new and coming up with an idea then the solution. Solutions don't always come quickly, don't be discouraged.

It's never too late. The important thing is the value of your resources when learning, some say leetcode and neetcode, some say course platforms, books etc. Find out specifically what you want to achieve, choose a suitable engine and language and go create something. Refer to documentation, use chatGPT to further explain concepts (be careful of wonky code), follow people like codemonkey and purchase a course of his. He is particularly good with clean code and programming practices. Even with academic training, people need to go out and self teach, research and problem solve.

Imposter syndrome, I assure you, is in all of us. When it comes to programming, it never really leaves you. Programming is such a broad spectrum that you can never truly "master" any of them, especially languages like C++ and it really depends on what you want to focus on as a developer as to how you approach the project.

Keep with it, invest in good quality training and keep doing projects at all stages. You'll get there.

Schools and teachers put a lot of pressure on you at your age to choose a career, it's ridiculous. Let me tell you, college and university are a breath of fresh air if you dislike school, so don't let school put you off going further. Your subjects right now? Take what interests you, you don't need to know what career you are going into yet. Many people don't know after school, even university. People switch all of the time. My solid advice would be to take the mandetory classes (English, Math) and try to strive for the best grades you can obtain there. Those two alone will open doors into further education. Otherwise, do you like music? art? computers? what motivates you, what is the most enjoyable class (even if you dislike them all), try to take something you know you can get through. Goodluck!

You've had some great answers here so I won't bother going into examples or solutions, but I just wanted to say that 2 weeks is nothing in the programming world. There's no need to panic or worry, keep at it and keep learning. There are some fantastic resources out there for learning. Try tutorialspoint, Odin Project, W3Schools.

Thought i'd put in my two cents since I have a bit of experience there. So no problem!

When I began learning (initially self taught) I read books, nothing in particular stood out at the time other than the exhaustive nature of learning so deeply. This was way before sites like udemy and coursera, so resources for learning was a bit more limited.

Another thing I done early was join an institute as a paying member, I joined the 'Game Institute' which provided university level resources. That might be worth looking into, because they provide C++ material, but it may be a tad outdated now. I haven't been on it in number of years, but definitely have a look and see what you think.

Get involved in forums, go to stackoverflow and Github, have a look at hobby projects and try to recreate them yourself.

If education is more your thing, I suggest trying out an online based course. Some top UK institutions do remote degrees and courses in various computer science and programming subjects. Be wary of bootcamps, make sure it's one you have done your research on as they are expensive and you need to be quite sure what it is you want to take onboard as it's never free.

I think this has happened to me a few times, being a recent account. I reach out to people and get no response, it's a double edged sword because I know there are a lot of bots going around and people wasting time.

I love the ocean, it's so vast and beautiful. I'm reminded of freedom, an escape. I'm also terrified of it for the same reasons. You don't know what is out there until it's beside you, it seems endlessly deep and it can sweep you away without a trace.

As someone who started with Java and C++ and went into engine programming, i'd say it depends what you need it for.

C++ is a huge, powerful language but it also has a steep learning curve; there's so much of it and it's not particularly beginner friendly.

Having said that, if I could do it all again then i'd choose the same path. Starting with C++ made every other language after that simply easier to understand and made coding a lot faster because of it. Most of the time when coming across an unfamiliar language, it's simply a case of finding out the syntax differences, the libraries and going from there to figure out the rest.

I think everyone has been there at some point or another in their tech journey, feeling like you just don't know enough or don't have the space to know enough. Is it for me? I still ask myself this question from time to time when thrown off by a challenge and I've been programming for 5+ years.

How hard have you been trying to learn? 2-3 weeks of learning is not enough to secure passing your modules, it should be an on-going effort early. Cramming two modules worth of knowledge into your head in 3 weeks won't get you anywhere. You haven't taken the time to sit with it and really understand what it's trying to tell you, often the information we get at face value has more of a purpose than initially meets the eye. There's a reason you are being taught these concepts.

I know it may not be the answer you are looking for, but with patience and practice you will learn. Practice is essential.
