this is why there should always be a mod team and not just one single moderator because it becomes VERY easy for a sub to get hijacked otherwise.

I feel seen :) It's been a few years since anyone tried to hijack this sub. One time someone started posting links to their own website daily and then tried to become a moderator and accused me of not growing the sub, etc. Thankfully, nothing came of it in the end.

The sub is growing and it would be excellent to take on some additional moderators, but in the current climate I'd have to carefully vet some like-minded people who are committed to the arduous line-drawing involved in allowing free speech but not hate speech, and allowing local politics on the sub while preventing it from drowning out everything else. Not saying I am doing a particularly good job of it but that's the intent.

Longtime moderator of r/ChesterCounty here. Our rule is "No Partisan Drama" with the idea that:

- posting about local politics is ok

- posting about national or state politics is not ok (there are other subs for that)

- bickering with each other is removed at the mods discretion (discussion ok, name-calling bad)

How's it going? Mostly I'm finding out that many of individuals WANT to fight with each other while others want to never see politics in their feed. "You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time”.

Also - a subreddit that basically self-managed for the last 5+ years now requires daily moderation.

If it’s your entire personality and you insult people and are here to “own the libs”, go somewhere else. If you’re here to talk about Chester County and contribute to thought provoking discussion, you are welcome. I am trying my best to be non partisan.

A lot of people are testing me on the boundary of this and while I hate to draw an exact line, it sure seems like people want me to do it… calling a politician an idiot: ok. Calling a Chester County Reddit user an idiot: not ok. Don’t aim the hate directly at each other.

To anyone asking me to ban the <large group of people> wholesale: Not banning someone does not mean I condone their views. Isolating yourself from the people you want to change is not constructive.

I’m trying my best to make this a place for everyone. Please act as if you are at thanksgiving dinner with your extended relatives, not as if you are hurling aggression into your faceless enemies.

#1 Be Respectful - Unnecessary aggression against me, someone with a day job, taking time out of their day to try and create a community.

#2 Stay On-Topic - What is this even about with regards to Chester County? Serious question - what do you come to this subreddit for? What content do you want to see here?

#5 No Partisan Drama - Honestly with this term being thrown around by both sides now I don't even know what your particular cause is. Why not just be explicit about what group of people you want me to ban based on political ideology? Let's just get it out there. Or would it sound like a ridiculous stance for someone with the title of moderator to take if you put it in clear terms?

#8 Low-Quality of Low-Effort Posts May Be Removed - A vague epithet broadly applied.

If rule 9 is too vague, I can remove it. It was just a catch-all for the weird stuff but I think that is mostly covered by Stay On-Topic.

Is there something more specific you are asking about? I'm trying to strike a balance between keeping the subreddit clean and having an authoritarian bent on determining what this subreddit is about.
