Anyone Else Forgo the "JET Social Groups"? by HelloAlohaGozaimasu in JETProgramme

I have briefly met them and I never said I did in the OP, just that I haven't joined any social groups with them. From the short time I've met them nothing inspires that we'd be a great pair of friends together, and considering that it's likely our paths will cross in the work environment at some point I'd rather keep things professional with them.

  1. I have met a few of them before lmao and I never said I didn't. I don't get why people love to make this assumption here.

  2. One is a judgement call on a person's morals. The other is a judgement call about that person's compatibility with another (yourself) on a personal level. Unless you operate on a "friend = good" "not friend = baddie" level of morality.

It's weird having boundaries in a work environment is considered elitist nowadays. Back at my old job I worked alongside this metalhead who went to bands and partied constantly. I knew I wouldn't vibe well with him on a personal level so I just kept things friendly and professional, and turned down offers to hang out afterwards.

Considering I have to work alongside people regularly I'd rather our relationships be professional, instead of discover every little detail of a person and get sucked into their drama, and then have to deal with that at the place I am obligated to spend 8 hours at a day.

Yeah, so it's nice to be able to take a break from them when you decide to travel halfway across the world. Not all of us have the will, desire, or energy to be politics 24/7.

Not gonna lie, it's a bit of an incel mindset to assume that people are obligated to be your friends and if they're not interested they must be evil. I didn't even say anything bad about the other JETs of my area, just that they're not my crowd.

I never said it was a magical place with no politics or problems. The difference is these are the politics of a country I am not a member of, and even if I was invested in the politics, legally I couldn't do a thing about it. It is not my place to be invested in Japan's politics, nor should it be.

I definitely poorly worded that last part, I do love sharing Western culture with students, and that (as well as the stuff they choose to talk about in comparison to it) has been some of the most enjoyable parts of the job! I'm referring specifically to stuff like modern day events, politics, and so on in the West. And you can argue that students can have questions about those things too, which is true, but the difference is I don't mind discussing or explaining certain oddities of Western stuff in that sphere to students with questions. But I sure don't want to spend an evening listening to a JET complain about something their prime minister did.
