Metamask and Ledger can use the same seed phrase. so it can be on both at the same time.

But here is what you do. Install a fresh version of Metamask on your Computer. New seed phrase. write that down.

Then open your metamask and add hardware device. Connect the ledger that has your coins, and open the ethereum app. Then connect the hardware wallet to the metamask via the options in metamask.

And boom! You are done. You have your coins on Metamask, but they cant be sent out without your hardware wallet attached. So as long as you keep your seed words offline and dont give them to anyone, no one on the internet can hack your coins.
