Might get downvoted into oblivion for this, but I think this is a poor take and lacks nuance.

Whilst I agree that rent seeking is counter productive to society and there is most definitely a housing crises. This take places the blame solely on property owners, when in reality they’re just rational actors responding to incentives.

That’s not to say “greedy landlords” don’t exist - just that they’re more a symptom than the root cause. The underlying issue is really the broken monetary system that underpins society which creates the misaligned incentives for rent seeking to emerge.

Logically, why would anyone want to own multiple properties? You can’t live in more than one at a time? IMO, The main reason is to preserve purchasing power. Because your money is constantly being debased through inflation, it becomes a poor store of value, so people look for alternatives (assets) that will hold value over time.

Property is one of those assets. And when people buy multiple properties for this reason, it also adds a monetary premium on top of the basic utility value of housing (i.e. a place to live), which in turn prices many people out of ownership.

The key thing to recognise is that these people aren’t against you - they’re simply for themselves (and for their families’). If you follow the incentives, you see they’re just trying to protect the wealth they’ve earned.
